Combined field and airborne imaging spectrometry studies demonstrate the capacity for accurate empirical estimation of forest canopy N concentration and other biochemical constituents at scales from forest stands to small landscapes. In this paper, we report on the utility of the first spacebased imaging spectrometer, Hyperion, for estimation of temperate forest canopy N concentration as compared to that achieved with the airborne highaltitude imaging spectrometer, the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS). Overall accuracy of Hyperion estimates of forest canopy N concentration, as compared with field measurements, were within 0.25% dry mass, and AVIRISbased estimates were within 0.19% dry mass, each well within the accuracy required to distinguish among forested ecosystems in nitrogen status. Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) images collected over agricultural region in northwest Mexico. Across 115 fields a range of cover types, radiance measurements collected by ALI were within 3% of ETM+ for all five common bands. Crop discrimination was significantly improved with ALI compared ETM+, with an increase from 85% to 95% accuracy for distinguishing maize from wheat fields. This improvement was attributed to the greater SNR in ALI, as well as the unique information content of ALI band 4p (0.84-0.89 um), which may be to sensitivity to canopy water content. Yield predictions from reflectance-calibrated data did not reveal significant differences between the sensors. The greatest distinction between ALI and ETM+ was observed in the panchromatic band, with ALI providing more detailed information on inter and intrafield radiance differences, which show promise for precision agriculture applications. We conclude that ALI meets or exceeds ETM+ performance for agricultural applications evaluated here, thus providing a plausible option for continuity of the valuable Landsat record. [Termes IGN] Thematic MapperRésumé : (Auteur) The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Landsat program has been dedicated to sustaining data continuity over the 20-year period during which Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced TM Plus (ETM+) sensors have been acquiring images of the earth's surface. In 2000, NASA launched the Earth Observing1 (EO1) Advanced Land Imager (ALI) to test new technology that could improve the TM/ETM+ sensor series, yet ensure Landsat data continuity. The study reported here quantified the continuity of satelliteretrieved surface reflectance () for the three most recent Landsat sensors (Landsat-4 TM, Landsat-5 TM, and Landsat-7 ETM+) and the EO-1 ALI sensor. The study was based on grounddata verification and, in the case of the ETM+ to ALI comparison, coincident image analysis. Reflectance retrieved from all four sensors showed good correlation with groundmeasured reflectance, and the sensortosensor data continuity was excellent for all sensors and all bands. A qualitative analysis of the new ALI spectral bands (4p: 0.845-0.890 um and 5p: 1.201.30 um) showed that ALI band 5p provided information that was different from that provided by the ETM+/ALI shortwave infrared bands 5 and 7 for agricultural targets and that ALI band 4p has the advantage over the existing ETM+ nearinfrared (NIR) band 4 and ALI NIR band 4 of being relatively insensitive to water vapor absorption. The. basic conclusion of this study is that the four sensors can provide excellent data continuity for temporal studies of natural resources. Furthermore, the new technologies put forward by the EO1 ALI sensor have had no apparent effect on data continuity and should be considered for the upcoming Landsat8 sensor payload. [Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) This research was designed to evaluate the operational utility of airborne video for classification accuracy assessment of satellite imagery. There are a number of logistical advantages in utilizing airborne video data particularly in remote or large catchment regions where ground accessibility can be prohibitively expensive. In a study of land cover characteristics in the Barossa Valley, South Australia comparisons of Landsat ETM+ classification accuracy assessments were derived from both airborne video and standard ground truthing point sampling techniques. The airborne video data was obtained by randomly frame grabbing 243 individual scenes along four predetermined flight lines and computing classification accuracies and error matrix statistics. These results were then compared with similar statistics derive ' dfirom 180 randomly chosen ground sampling sites. The costs involved in obtaining both sets of data per sampling point were also calculated. The results demonstrated that the airborne video data provided similar degrees of accuracy assessment at a cost of approximately one seventh that of the ground survey with the added advantages of increased data collection, overall improved site accessibility and the ability to continually store and review the data. The cost differentiation would become even more pronounced in more remote and inaccessible areas. In general the results of the unsupervised Landsat ETM+ classification were rather poor producing an overall general accuracy of 70% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.65, highlighting the classification difficulties encountered in using commercial satellite imagery for land cover assessments in an area with very heterogeneous fine grained land use patterns. It is therefore of special importance to select such an area to carry out an intensive land use change study and establish a dynamic monitoring system thereof aiming at understanding the change mechanism, human-environmental relationships and producing useful references for the central and local governments in their sustainable land use planning.
Multitemporal Landsat images were used for change detection by adopting a synthetic method including atmospheric correction, Tasseled Cap transformation, indicator differencing, thresholding, change type identification and county-level quantification. A classification on the recent image was conducted to quantify the present land use and cover pattern. A panel analysis calibrated by multivariate regression model was applied to reveal the driving forces of land cover changes and understand the interaction between the human activities and environment modifications by incorporating the results obtained from the change detection with the county-level socio-economic data. The regression modelling results suggest that the vegetation degradation- the predominant change type in the study area, is probably related to the soil erosion (R' = 0.994) and grassland degradation; the farmland extension, occurring principally in the valleys in the Yulin County, is associated with the foodproduct increase (R' = 0.987); the urban extension, spatially related to coal mining, is linked to the urban population growth (R' = 0. 881); and the surface decrease of waterbodies, having taken place in the sandy land, is negatively correlated to the cultivated land change (R' = 0. 562). Therefore, the factors which govern these land use and cover changes are various human socio-economic activities, and the root cause of land degradation is, however, some unreasonable land use policies.Numéro de notice : A2003-392 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : sans Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=26472
