[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The problem of identifying the shortest path along a road network is a fundamental problem in network analysis, ranging from route guidance in a navigation system to solving spatial allocation problems. Since this type of problem is solved so frequently, it is important to craft an approach that is as efficient as possible. Based upon past research, it is generally accepted that several efficient implementations of the Dijkstra algorithm are the fastest at optimally solving the 'one-to-one' shortest path problem (Cherkassky et al. 1996). We show that the most efficient state-of-the-art implementations of Dijkstra can be improved by taking advantage of network properties associated with GIS-sourced data. The results of this paper, derived from tests of different algorithmic approaches on real road networks, will be extremely valuable for application developers and researchers in the GIS community. [Termes IGN] trafic routierRésumé : (Auteur) In recent decades, rapid growth of travel volume has resulted in a significant increase in traffic congestion, accidents, environmental pollution and energy consumption. Accurate traffic data are drastically needed for effective evaluation of traffic systems in order to alleviate the impacts of increasing travel volume of the quality of life and economic development of urban areas. This article provides a discussion on a data acquisition methodology for highway traffic pattern recognition and congestion analysis by integrating data from the global positioning system (GPS) with a geographic information system (GIS). The GPS technology is a powerful tool in capturing continuous positioning and timing information, whereas the GIS is capable of storing, managing, manipulating, analyzing and displaying the acquired spatial information. Compared to previous studies, the effective integration of the two technologies allows for traffic analysis to be conducted at a finer resolution. The proposed method is illustrated with a case study on multiple major highway segments in Columbus, Ohio. [Termes IGN] Oklahoma (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) The advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) onboard of the satellite ENVISAT can be operated in global monitoring (GM) mode. ASAR GM mode has delivered the first global multiyear C-band backscatter data set in HH polarization at a spatial resolution of 1 km. This paper investigates if ASAR GM can be used for retrieving soil moisture using a change detection approach over large regions. A method previously developed for the European Remote Sensing (ERS) scatterometer is adapted for use with ASAR GM and tested over Oklahoma, USA. The ASAR-GM-derived relative soil moisture index is compared to 50-km ERS soil moisture data and pointlike in situ measurements from the Oklahoma MESONET. Even though the scale gap from ASAR GM to the in situ measurements is less pronounced than in the case of the ERS scatterometer, the correlation for ASAR against the in situ measurements is, in general, somewhat weaker than for the ERS scatterometer. The analysis suggests that this is mainly due to the much higher noise level of ASAR GM compared to the ERS scatterometer. Therefore, some spatial averaging to 3-10 km is recommended to reduce the noise of the ASAR GM soil moisture images. Nevertheless, the study demonstrates that ASAR GM allows resolving spatial details in the soil moisture patterns not observable in the ERS scatterometer measurements while still retaining the basic capability of the ERS scatterometer to capture temporal trends over large areas. [Termes IGN] Virginie (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Feature reduction in a remote sensing dataset is often desirable to decrease the processing time required to perform a classification and improve overall classification accuracy. This paper introduces a feature reduction method based on the singular value decomposition (SVD). This SVD-based feature reduction method reduces the storage and processing requirements of the SVD by utilizing a training dataset. This feature reduction technique was applied to training data from two multitemporal datasets of Landsat TM/ETM+ imagery acquired over a forested area in Virginia, USA and Rondônia, Brazil. Subsequent parallel iterative guided spectral class rejection (pIGSCR) forest/non-forest classifications were performed to determine the quality of the feature reduction. The classifications of the Virginia data were five times faster using SVD-based feature reduction without affecting the classification accuracy. Feature reduction using the SVD was also compared to feature reduction using principal components analysis (PCA). The highest average accuracies for the Virginia dataset (88.34%) and for the Rondônia dataset (93.31%) were achieved using the SVD. The results presented here indicate that SVD-based feature reduction can produce statistically significantly better classifications than PCA.
