[Vedettes matières IGN] AltimétrieRésumé : (Auteur) Three unique techniques have been developed to validate the Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) mission altimetry data product and implemented at White Sands Space Harbor (WSSH) in New Mexico. One specific technique at WSSH utilizes zenith-pointed sensors to detect the laser on the surface and enable geolocation determination of the altimeter footprint that is independent of the data product generation. The system of detectors also registers the laser light time of arrival, which is related to the data product time tag. Several overflights of the WSSH have validated these time tags to less than 3+ 1 us. The ground-based detector system also verified the laser illuminated spot geolocation to 10.6 m (3.5 arcsec) + 4.5 m on one occasion, which is consistent with the requirement of 3.5 m (1ó). A third technique using corner cube retroreflector signatures in the altimeter echo waveforms was also shown to provide an assessment of the laser spot geolocation. Although the accuracy of this technique is not equal to the other methodologies, it does offer position determination for comparison to the spacecraft altimetry data product. In addition, elevation verifications were made using the comparison of the ICESat elevation products at WSSH to those acquired with an airborne light detection and ranging. The elevation comparisons show an agreement to within + 34 cm (+ 6.7 cm under best conditions) which indicate no significant errors associated with the pointing knowledge of the altimeter. [Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (Auteur) Recent growth of the geospatial information on the web has made it possible to easily access a wide variety of spatial data. The ability to combine various sets of geospatial data into a single composite dataset has been one of central issues of modern geographic information processing. By conflating diverse spatial datasets, one can support a rich set of queries that could have not been answered given any of these sets in isolation. However, automatically conflating geospatial data from different data sources remains a challenging task. This is because geospatial data obtained from various data sources may have different projections, different accuracy levels and different formats (e.g., raster or vector format), thus resulting in various positional inconsistencies. Most of the existing algorithms only deal with vector to vector data conflation or require human intervention to accomplish vector data to imagery conflation. In this paper, we describe a novel geospatial data fusion approach, named AMS-Conflation, which achieves automatic vector to imagery conflation. We describe an efficient technique to automatically generate control point pairs from the orthoimagery and vector data by exploiting the information from the vector data to perform localized image processing on the orthoimagery. We also evaluate a filtering technique to automatically eliminate inaccurate pairs from the generated control points. We show that these conflation techniques can automatically align the roads in orthoimagery, such that 75% of the conflated roads are within 3.6 meters from the real road axes compared to 35% for the original vector data for partial areas of the county of St. Louis, MO. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) There are billions of federal computer records that relate to the millions of acres of “public lands” in the United States. These records are administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). In the late 1990s, a publicly funded effort was undertaken to develop a truly modern GIS, in order to help manage the extensive land holdings and data records in the U.S. It is called the National Integrated Land System, or NILS for short. This system is now accessible to the public for on-line searching, viewing, and eventual downloading of selected records. It also can be used to generate custom maps of selected lands. The following article describes NILS in mostly general terms. More detailed papers and articles can be found on the BLM website at www.blm.gov/nils/. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) An overview of the March 2003 coordinated sea ice field campaign in the Alaskan Arctic is presented with reference to the papers in this special section. This campaign is part of the program to validate the Aqua Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) sea ice products. Standard AMSR-E sea ice products include sea ice concentration, sea ice temperature, and snow depth on sea ice. The validation program consists of three elements, namely: 1) satellite data comparisons; 2) coordinated satellite/aircraft/surface measurements; and 3) modeling and sensitivity analyses. Landsat-7 and RADARSAT observations were used in comparative studies with the retrieved AMSR-E sea ice concentrations. The aircraft sensors provided high-resolution microwave imagery of the surface, atmospheric profiles of temperature and humidity, and digital records of sea ice conditions. When combined with in situ measurements, aircraft data were used to validate the AMSR-E sea ice temperature and snow-depth products. The modeling studies helped interpret the field-data comparisons, provided insight on the limitations of the AMSR-E sea ice algorithms, and suggested potential improvements to the AMSR-E retrieval algorithms.
