[Termes IGN] optimisation (mathématiques)Résumé : (Auteur) We develop a method to decompose a laser altimeter return waveform into a series of components assuming that the position of each component within the waveform can be used to calculate the mean elevation of a specific reflecting surface within the laser footprint. For simplicity, they assume each component is Gaussian in nature. They estimate the number of Gaussian components from the number of inflection points of a smoothed copy of the laser waveform and obtain initial estimates of the Gaussian half-widths and positions from the positions of its consecutive inflection points. Initial amplitude estimates are obtained using a nonnegative least-squares method (LSM). To reduce the likelihood of fitting the background noise within the waveform and to minimize the number of Gaussians needed in the approximation, we rank the “importance” of each Gaussian in the decomposition using its initial half-width and amplitude estimates. The initial parameter estimates of all Gaussians ranked “important” are optimized using the Levenburg-Marquardt method. If the sum of the Gaussians does not approximate the return waveform to a prescribed accuracy, then additional Gaussians can be included in the optimization procedure or initial parameters can be recalculated. The Gaussian decomposition method is demonstrated on data collected by the airborne laser vegetation imaging sensor (LVIS) in October 1997 over the Sequoia National Forest, California. [Termes IGN] sous ensemble flouRésumé : (Auteur) Traditionally, the classes in thematic maps have been treated as crisp sets, using classical set theory. In this formulation, map classes are assumed to be mutually exclusive and exhaustive. This approach limits the ability of thematic maps to represent the continuum of variation found in most landscapes. Substitution of fuzzy sets allows more flexibility for treatment of map classes in the areas of accuracy assessment and area estimation. Accuracy assessment methods based on fuzzy sets allow consideration of the magnitude of errors and assessment of the frequency of ambiguity in map classes. An example of an accuracy assessment from a vegetation map of the Plumas National Forest illustrates the implementation of these methods. Area estimation based on fuzzy sets and using accuracy assessment data allows estimation of the area of classes as a function of levels of class membership. The fuzzy area estimation methods are an extension of previous methods presented by Card (1982). One interesting result is that the sum of the areas of the classes in a map need not be unity. This approach allows a wider range of queries within a GIS. [Termes IGN] travailRésumé : (Auteur) Using the newly released Census for Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) 1990, this research utilizes GIS tools to explain intraurban variations of commuting in Chicago at the Traffic Analysis Zone (TAZ) level. While commute times are directly available from the CTPP, commute distances are derived from the shortest time distances through real-world road networks. GIS surface modeling is used to help identify the major employment center (CBD) and other subcenters. The explanations of commute times and distances are attempted by various measures of job accessibility : the jobs-housing balance ratio defined in a floating catchment area, distances from the CBD and subcenters, and a gravity-based index that takes the effects of all jobs into account. These measurements better explain how far people commute than how much time they spend on commuting. The best model explains over 50% of the variation of commuting among 7,835 TAZs. This is a significant improvement over existing literature, which at best explained less than 30 percent.
