[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Context : Knowledge of realistic and sustainable wood availability in Europe is highly relevant to define climate change mitigation strategies at national and European level, to support the development of realistic targets for increased use of renewable energy sources and of industry wood. Future scenarios at European level highlight a deficit of domestic wood supply compared to wood consumption, and some European countries state they are harvesting above the increment.
Aims : Several country-level studies on wood availability have been performed for international reporting. However, it remains essential to improve the knowledge on the projection methods used across Europe to better evaluate forecasts.
Methods : Analysis was based on descriptions supplied by the national correspondents involved in USEWOOD COST Action (FP1001), and further enriched with additionaldata from international reports that allowed characterisation of the forests in these countries for the same base year.
Results : Methods currently used for projecting wood availability were described for 21 European countries. Projection systems based on National Forest Inventory (NFI) data prevail over methods based on forest management plans. Only a few countries lack nationwide projection tools, still using tools developed for specific areas.
Conclusions : A wide range of NFI-based systems for projecting wood availability exists, being under permanent improvement. The validation of projection forecasts and the inclusion of climate sensitive growth models into these tools are common aims for most countries. [Termes IGN] VerdunRésumé : (auteur) Cent ans après la Grande Guerre, les traces des champs de bataille restent présentes dans les paysages du Nord-Est de la France. En 2013, une prospection par LiDAR aéroporté de la forêt domaniale de Verdun a mis en évidence sous forme d’images 3-D à haute résolution les vestiges de guerre masqués par le manteau forestier. Cette étude explore les potentialités de l’outil LiDAR pour l’analyse et la cartographie des témoins des aménagements militaires dans le bois des Caures (forêt domaniale de Verdun), lieu des premiers combats de la bataille de Verdun (1916). Le traitement d’images combiné à l’analyse de terrain permet d’établir une typologie et une cartographie inédites de la diversité des vestiges, abris et fossés, et de l’organisation du champ de bataille. However, these datasets very are often required at userdefined spatial units that differ from the census output levels. A number of population estimation techniques have been developed to address these problems. This article is one of those attempts aimed at improving county level population estimates by using spatial disaggregation models with support of buildings characteristic, derived from national topographic database, and average area of a flat. The experimental gridded population surface was created for Opatów county, sparsely populated rural region located in Central Poland. The method relies on geolocation of population counts in buildings, taking into account the building volume and structural building type and then aggregation the people total in 1 km quadrilateral grid. The overall quality of population distribution surface expressed by the mean of RMSE equals 9 persons, and the MAE equals 0.01. We also discovered that nearly 20% of total county area is unpopulated and 80% of people lived on 33% of the county territory. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Self-thinning lines are species- and climate-specific, and they should be used when assessing the capacity of different forest stands to increase biomass/carbon storage.
Context : The capacity of forests to store carbon can help to mitigate the effects of atmospheric CO2 rise and climate change. The self-thinning relationship (average size measure ∼ stand density) has been used to identify the potential capacity of biomass storage at a given density and to evaluate the effect of stand management on stored carbon. Here, a study that shows how the self-thinning line varies with species and climate is presented.
Aims : Our main objective is thus testing whether species identity and climate affect the self-thinning line and therefore the potential amount of carbon stored in living biomass.
Methods : The Ecological and Forest Inventory of Catalonia was used to calculate the self-thinning lines of four common coniferous species in Catalonia, NE Iberian Peninsula (Pinus halepensis, Pinus nigra, Pinus sylvestris and Pinus uncinata). Quadratic mean diameter at breast height was chosen as the average size measure. The self-thinning lines were used to predict the potential diameter at a given density and study the effect of environmental variability.
Results : Species-specific self-thinning lines were obtained. The self-thinning exponent was consistent with the predicted values of −3/2 and −4/3 for mass-based scaling for all species except P. sylvestris. Species identity and climatic variability within species affected self-thinning line parameters.
Conclusion : Self-thinning lines are species-specific and are affected by climatic conditions. [Termes IGN] structure d'un peuplement forestierRésumé : (auteur) Forest structural diversity plays a major role for forest management, conservation and restoration and is recognized as a fundamental aspect of forest biodiversity. The assessment, maintenance and restoration of a diversified forest structure have become major foci in the effort to preserve forest ecosystems from loss of biological diversity. However, the assessment of forest biodiversity is difficult because it involves multiple components and is characterized using multiple variables. The objective of the study was to develop a methodological approach for predicting, mapping, and constructing a statistical inference for a multiple-variable index of forest structural diversity. The method included three key components: (i) use of the k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN) technique, field plot data, and airborne laser scanning metrics to predict multiple forest structural diversity variables simultaneously, (ii) incorporation of multiple diversity variable predictions into a single index, and (iii) construction of a statistically rigorous inference for the population mean of the index. Three structural diversity variables were selected to illustrate the method: growing stock volume and the standard deviations of tree diameter at breast-height and tree height. Optimization of the k-NN technique produced mean relative deviations less in absolute value than 0.04 for predictions for each of the three structural diversity variables, R2 values between 0.50 and 0.66 which were in the range of values reported in the literature, and a confidence interval for the population mean of the index whose half-width was approximately 5% of the mean. Finally, the spatial pattern depicted in the resulting map of forest structural diversity for the study area contributed to validating the proposed method.
