[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) The paper investigates built-up areas expansion after the 1990 in one of the highly urbanized regions of Romania - Romanian Plain, in order to explore the urban sprawl phenomena and its temporal and regional disparities in relation to some of the main distance driving factors. The research uses Landsat 4/5 Thematic Mapper (TM), Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM), and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) imagery to derive built-up areas and quantify their expansion over time in relation to fourteen distance explanatory factors: i.e. previous built-up areas, main road infrastructure, Bucharest city’s boundary, location of the urban centres classified according to demographic size and main economic function, forest land and water bodies. To estimate the influence of the predictors, the binary logistic regression was applied. Furthermore, to estimate the effectiveness of the predictor set in the variation of built-up areas expansion, the pseudo R2 was calculated and discussed. Moreover, to understand the future potential trend of urban sprawl and its spatial pattern, the probability maps were generated by integrating the regression coefficients of the statistically significant predictors into the spatial modeling. For the results performance assessment, the statistic Receiver Operating Characteristic and the pixel-based comparison between the real and predicted data were used. To assess possible differences at spatial and temporal scale, the analysis was carried out at regional level, for two periods: 1990–2002 and 2002–2018. In general, our findings show inverse relationship between the distance driving factors and built-up areas expansion, but the estimated predictive power suggests important disparities within the study area over the analysed periods. Overall, the statistical analysis indicate that the distance to previous build-up areas, distance to road infrastructure, distance to Bucharest and other large urban centres, and distance to urban centres with dominant industrial and service functions were more influential to urban sprawl after 1990. Furthermore, the predicted spatial data shows the highest potential of urban sprawl in the future around Bucharest, in the proximity of existing built-up areas and road infrastructure. Because of its predictive character, the present study is to be a useful tool for land managers and policy makers. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Mixed mountain forests with an uneven-aged structure are characterized by a high tree-growth variability making traditional age-dependent growth models inapplicable. Estimating site productivity is yet another impediment for modelling tree growth in such forests. Uneven-aged mixed-stand forests are known for their high resilience, resistance and productivity, and are being promoted as a suitable alternative to even-aged, pure plantations for climate change adaptation and mitigation. However, their growth must be accurately measured and predicted, but diameter at the breast height (dbh) increment models specifically designed for uneven-aged mixed mountain forests are still rare. Using permanent sampling network data and 465 increment cores, we built two age-independent dbh increment (id) models for the main species of the study area, namely Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). Mixed effects models and the algebraic difference approach were employed to develop id models based on empirical and commonly used theoretical growth functions. A past growth index was further developed and introduced in the model in order to explain the id variability. Several mixed effects calibration strategies were assessed in order to obtain the most accurate localized curve for new plots. Tree size, competition and biogeoclimatic variables were found to explain the id through the empirical growth function, while the growth index significantly improved the theoretical growth function for Norway spruce. The optimization of the calibration strategy for the mixed effects modelling framework enables the growth index implementation in forest practice as an accurate method for estimating site productivity. The accuracy of the two id models was similar: the root mean squared error of the empirical growth function varied between 0.940 and 1.042 cm for spruce, beech and fir, while the root mean squared error obtained through the theoretical growth function for spruce only was 1.105 cm. The basal area increment prediction at the plot level based on the theoretical growth function reached a root mean squared error of 0.043 m2 while using the empirical growth function the root mean squared error is 0.047 m2. The high accuracy obtained using age-independent models underlines their suitability for predicting growth in mixed uneven-aged forests. The developed models can be easily integrated into forest practice to accurately obtain id estimates. [Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (auteur) During the last years, the analysis of spatio-temporal data extracted from Online Social Networks (OSNs) has become a prominent course of action within the human-mobility mining discipline. Due to the noisy and sparse nature of these data, an important effort has been done on validating these platforms as suitable mobility proxies. However, such a validation has been usually based on the computation of certain features from the raw spatio-temporal trajectories extracted from OSN documents. Hence, there is a scarcity of validation studies that evaluate whether geo-tagged OSN data are able to measure the evolution of the mobility in a region at multiple spatial scales. For that reason, this work proposes a comprehensive comparison of a nation-scale Twitter (TWT) dataset and an official mobility survey from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics. The target time period covers a three-month interval during which Spain was heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Both feeds have been compared in this context by considering different mobility-related features and spatial scales. The results show that TWT could capture only a limited number features of the latent mobility behaviour of Spain during the study period. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) The aim of the work was to quantify the mass of logging residues (branches and tops; t yr−1 dry matter, DM) for energy generation starting from Forest Management Plans (FMP) data. The methodology was applied to public stands of an Italian district (area: 3.60 × 104 ha; period: 2009–2018). Compared to the previous preliminary analysis, the potentially available residues were computed considering forest accessibility and road traversability, by combining FMPs data with a geographic information system (GIS). New issues that were assessed here were: (i) representation of stands consisting of multiple disconnected parts; (ii) calculation of producible residues by using different values of biomass expansion factors (Scenario 1, S1; Scenario 2, S2). The potentially available residues computed for the analyzed period were used to quantify the current sustainable supply. Then, the potentially generated heat (thermal energy, TE; GJ yr−1) and electricity (EE; GJ yr−1), and the potentially avoided CO2 emissions into the atmosphere (EM; t yr−1 CO2) related to the final combustion process were computed by assuming that the current supply of residues was used as woodchips in a local centralized heating plant currently operating. For both S1 and S2, the large difference between the potentially producible and the potentially available residues demonstrated that geodata are essential for reliable estimations. Moreover, as the required information for the GIS analysis can be easily found in databases made available by forestry authorities, the proposed approach can be applied also to other areas; this could be helpful to support local decision-makers in defining sustainable practices for residues recovery. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In recent years, Pinus sylvestris die-off and mortality events have occurred across all its range of distribution, usually associated with recurrent droughts induced by climate change. A shift in canopy dominance towards other better adapted co-existing species can be expected, especially in populations located close to their climatic tolerance limits. Herein, we tested, along a local elevational gradient, whether canopy opening resulting from die-off and mortality favours the growth of a non-dominant co-existing tree species (Quercus pubescens) established in the sub-canopy, in comparison to P. sylvestris sub-canopy trees. We also tested whether the growth of both species is associated with local climatic suitability for these species (extracted from SDMs) or, alternatively, with direct measures of micro-climatic variables. Finally, the effect on tree growth of other micro-local factors such as competition, canopy closure and micro-topography was also tested. Sub-canopy tree growth was enhanced overall by canopy opening resulting from P. sylvestris canopy die-off, but this response was stronger in P. sylvestris trees, reinforcing the self-replacement of this species after die-off. This higher growth rate is related to modifications in the micro-local climate (higher temperatures in the wettest quarter). Conversely, Q. pubescens is less sensitive to micro-local climate conditions but it can grow faster than P. sylvestris on stands with no canopy die-off or mortality. In contrast, climatic suitability extracted from SDMs was negatively related to sub-canopy P. sylvestris growth and had no effect on Q. pubescens. These contrasting results support observations at plot scale that P. sylvestris self-replacement is better explained by local environmental conditions than by values of climatic suitability obtained from regional-scale data-sets. Nevertheless, these climatic suitability measures remain consistent with the overall pattern of low seedling recruitment observed in previous works at the rear edge of species' distribution. This study reveals that short-term shifts in species dominance at a local scale will not necessarily occur in the studied P. sylvestris forests following die-off. This finding endorses the notion that micro-local environment and species traits (i.e., light and temperature tolerance, life-history strategies) modulate the capacity for resilience in rear-edge populations that would probably be prone to collapse otherwise.
