[Termes IGN] valeur aberranteRésumé : (Auteur) Though Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data processing has been significantly improved over the years, it is still commonly observed that zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) estimates contain many outliers which are detrimental to meteorological and climatological applications. In this paper, we show that ZTD outliers in double-difference processing are mostly caused by sub-daily data gaps at reference stations, which cause disconnections of clusters of stations from the reference network and common mode biases due to the strong correlation between stations in short baselines. They can reach a few centimetres in ZTD and usually coincide with a jump in formal errors. The magnitude and sign of these biases are impossible to predict because they depend on different errors in the observations and on the geometry of the baselines. We elaborate and test a new baseline strategy which solves this problem and significantly reduces the number of outliers compared to the standard strategy commonly used for positioning (e.g. determination of national reference frame) in which the pre-defined network is composed of a skeleton of reference stations to which secondary stations are connected in a star-like structure. The new strategy is also shown to perform better than the widely used strategy maximizing the number of observations available in many GNSS programs. The reason is that observations are maximized before processing, whereas the final number of used observations can be dramatically lower because of data rejection (screening) during the processing. The study relies on the analysis of 1 year of GPS (Global Positioning System) data from a regional network of 136 GNSS stations processed using Bernese GNSS Software v.5.2. A post-processing screening procedure is also proposed to detect and remove a few outliers which may still remain due to short data gaps. It is based on a combination of range checks and outlier checks of ZTD and formal errors. The accuracy of the final screened GPS ZTD estimates is assessed by comparison to ERA-Interim reanalysis. Independent of plant diversity, the understory across different forest ecosystems shows considerable physiological acclimation and structural stability towards drought events, which are expected to occur more frequently in future.
Context: Understory plant communities are essential for the recruitment of trees making up the future forest. It is so far poorly understood how climate change will affect understory in beech and conifer forests managed at different intensity levels.
Aims: We hypothesized that drought would affect transpiration and carbon isotope discrimination but not species richness and diversity. Moreover, we assumed that forest management intensity will modify the responses to drought of the understory community.
Methods: We set up roofs in forests with a gradient of management intensities (unmanaged beech—managed beech—intensively managed conifer forests) in three regions across Germany. A drought event close to the 2003 drought was imposed in two consecutive years.
Results: After 2 years, the realized precipitation reduction was between 27% and 34%. The averaged water content in the top 20 cm of the soil under the roof was reduced by 2% to 8% compared with the control. In the 1st year, leaf level transpiration was reduced for different functional groups, which scaled to community transpiration modified by additional effects of drought on functional group leaf area. Acclimation effects in most functional groups were observed in the 2nd year.

[Termes IGN] Sarthe (72)Résumé : (Auteur) L'évaluation de la précision des cartes thématiques produites par télédétection est une finalité de tout processus de classification modélisant le paysage. Reposant traditionnellement sur la matrice de confusion, elle peut être complétée par des méthodes alternatives plus à même de prendre en compte le biais relatif à la sélection des échantillons d'apprentissage, ainsi que par l'emploi d'approches représentant spatialement l'incertitude inhérente aux classifications. Une telle démarche est adoptée dans cet article, en évaluant la précision à l'aide des estimateurs du Maximum de Probabilité a Posteriori, puis en déterminant, pour chaque unité de carte, des mesures d'incertitude : l'entropie a quadratique, la divergence de Kullback-Leibler et un indice de concordance qualitatif. Ces traitements sont analysés et comparés selon 3 classifieurs, Random Forest, C5.0 et l'Analyse Discriminante Linéaire et selon 4 stratégies de classification : classifieurs seuls, classifieurs avec procédure de bagging, classifieurs avec procédure d'apprentissage actifs et classifieurs avec procédure d'apprentissage actif et de bagging. Les résultats obtenus soulignent la complémentarité des estimateurs de précision pour mettre en évidence un biais dans l'évaluation de la précision ou dans la détermination des probabilités a posteriori, et justifie la prise en considération des indices d'incertitude comme source d'informations sur la distribution spatiale des erreurs de cartographie. Especially in urban areas, they lead to serious damages and endanger the citizens’ safety. Therefore, real-time information about such events is desirable. With the increasing popularity of social media platforms, such as Twitter or Instagram, information provided by voluntary users becomes a valuable source for emergency response. Many applications have been built for disaster detection and flood mapping using crowdsourcing. Most of the applications so far have merely used keyword filtering or classical language processing methods to identify disaster relevant documents based on user generated texts. As the reliability of social media information is often under criticism, the precision of information retrieval plays a significant role for further analyses. Thus, in this paper, high quality eyewitnesses of rainfall and flooding events are retrieved from social media by applying deep learning approaches on user generated texts and photos. Subsequently, events are detected through spatiotemporal clustering and visualized together with these high quality eyewitnesses in a web map application. Analyses and case studies are conducted during flooding events in Paris, London and Berlin.
