[Termes IGN] simulation d'étalonnageRésumé : (Auteur) Spectroradiometric measurements were made over a range of crop canopy densities, soil backgrounds and foliage colour. The reflected spectral radiances were convoluted with the spectral response functions of a range of satellite instruments to simulate their responses. When Normalised Difference Vegetation Indices (NDVI) from the different instruments were compared, they varied by a few percent, but the values were strongly linearly related, allowing vegetation indices from one instrument to be intercalibrated against another. A table of conversion coefficents is presented for AVHRR, ATSR2, Landsat MSS, TM and ETM+, SPOT-2 and SPOT-4 HRV, IRS, IKONOS, SEAWIFS, MISR, MODIS, POLDER, Quickbird and MERIS (see Appendix A for glossary of acronyms). The same set of coefficients was found to apply, within the margin of error of the analysis, for the Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index SAVI. The relationships for SPOT vs. TM and for ATSR-2 vs. AVHRR were directly validated by comparison of atmospherically corrected image data. The results indicate that vegetation indices can be interconverted to a precision of 12%. This result offers improved opportunities for monitoring crops through the growing season and the prospects of better continuity of long-term monitoring of vegetation responses to environmental change. [Termes IGN] réflectance végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) This paper outlines the strategies available for estimating the biophysical properties of crop canopies from remotely sensed data. Spectral reflectance and biophysical data were obtained over 132 plots of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) and in the first part of the paper the strength of the relationships between vegetation indices (VI) and leaf area index (LAI) are examined. In the second part, an approach is tested in which a canopy reflectance model is used to generate simulated spectra for a wide range of biophysical conditions and these data are used to train an artificial neural network (ANN). The advantage of the second approach is that a priori knowledge of the measurement conditions including soil reflectance, canopy architecture and solar position can be included explicitly in the modelling. The results show that the estimation of sugar beet LAI using a trained neural network is more reliable than the use of VI and has the potential to replace the use of VI for operational applications. The use of a priori data on the variation in soil spectral reflectance gave rise to a small increase in LAI estimation accuracy. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) An iterative filter that can be used for speckle reduction and restoration of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is presented here. This method can be considered as a first step in the extraction of other important information. The second step is the detection of high-reflectance regions and continues with the segmentation of the total image. We have worked in three-look simulated and real European Remote Sensing 1 satellite amplitude images. The iterative filter is based on a membrane model Markov random field approximation optimized by a synchronous local iterative method. The final form of restoration gives a total sum-preserving regularization for the pixel values of our image. The high-reflectance regions are defined as the brightest regions of the restored image. After the separation of this extreme class, we give a fast segmentation method using the histogram of the restored image. [Termes IGN] réflectanceRésumé : (Auteur) This study uses IKONOS imagery to quantify the combined spatial and spectral charactenistics of urban reflectance in 14 urban areas worldwide. IKONOS 1-m panchromatic imagery provides a detailed measure of spatial variations in albedo while IKONOS 4-m multispectral imagery allows the relative contributions of different matenials to the spectrally heterogeneous radiance field to be determined and their abundance to be mapped. Spatial autocorrelation analyses indicate that the characteristic scale of urban reflectance is consistently between 10 and 20 m for the cities in this study. Spectral mixture analysis quantifies the relative contributions of the dominant spectral endmembers to the overall reflectance of the urban mosaic. Spectral mixing spaces defined by the two low-order principal components account for 96% to 990% of image variance and have a consistent triangular structure spanned by high albedo, low albedo and vegetation endmembers. Spectral mixing among these endmembers is predominantly linear although some nonlinear mixing is observed along the gray axis spanning the high and low albedo endmembers. Inversion of a constrained three-component linear mixing model produces stable, consistent estimates of endmember abundance. RMS errors based on the misfit between observed radiance vectors and modeled radiance vectors (derived from fraction estimates and image endmembers) are generally less than 3% of the mean of the observed radiance. Agreement between observed radiance and fraction estimates does not guarantee the accuracy of the areal fraction estimates, but it does indicate that the three-component linear model provides a consistent and widely applicable physical characterization of urban reflectance. Field validated fraction estimates have applications in urban vegetation monitoring and pervious surface mapping.
