[Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (Auteur) Natural hazard analysis often makes use of alphanumeric data sets whose content is mainly expressed using natural language expressions that describe where and when events such as eruptions, avalanches, floods, etc. took place. However, a lot of expressions used in natural language are vague and imprecise and especially those which are used to locate places (around, near to, north of, etc.) and dates (between 1710 and 1711, at the beginning of the century, etc.). Some works propose approaches to define a spatial expansion representing the localization of any vague spatial information. Yet, these approaches do not allow to define any spatial or temporal localization that takes into account their physical environment: topographical or meteorological elements of the studied ground, nature and the characteristics of the observed phenomenon, etc. We propose a methodology that allows to improve the localization and the cartographic representation of imperfect spatial and temporal information. This methodology relies on a specific extension of Spatial ML and TimeML markup languages and an ontology for the integration, quantification and representation of imperfect spatio-temporal information expressed in natural language in order to locate natural hazard phenomena. In this paper, we present the elements of the STELLA (Spatial - TEmporal LocaLizAtion) methodology and framework . [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Increased attention to global climate change in recent years has resulted in a wide array of maps and geovisualizations that forecast various scenarios. Since many consequences of climate change are inherently geographic in nature, effective cartographic representations that depict these risks are valuable for planning and mitigation purposes. In particular, sea-level rise resulting from climate change calls attention to the numerous representation issues that warrant consideration for hazard and risk mapping in general, including categorizing and representing risk, selecting an appropriate level of realism, and displaying potential impacts of a hazard on human populations as well as on the natural and built environments. Using examples of potential inundation from sea-level rise at global, regional, and local scales, the authors propose a conceptual framework of key cartographic considerations for maps, Web-based mashups, and geovisualizations that depict risk. The cartographic framework presented here may be extended to other risks of an ambiguous or fuzzy nature and may be used to organize key future research areas for hazard or risk mapping in general. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Capturing the scope and trajectory of changes in land use and land cover (LULC) is critical to urban and regional planning, natural resource sustainability and the overall information needs of policy makers. Studies on LULC change are generally conducted within peaceful environments and seldom incorporate areas that are politically volatile. Consequently, the role of civil conflict on LULC change remains elusive. Using a dense time stack of Landsat Thematic Mapper images and a hybrid classification approach, this study analysed LULC changes in Kono District between 1986–1991, 1991–2002 and 2002–2007 with the overarching goal of elucidating deviations from typical changes in LULC caused by Sierra Leone's civil war (1991–2002). Informed by social survey and secondary data, this study engaged the drivers that facilitated LULC changes during war and non-war periods in a series of spatial regression models in exploring the interface between civil conflict and LULC change.
