[Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (Auteur) The identification of building rooftops from a single image, without the use of auxiliary 3-D information like stereo pairs or digital elevation models, is a very challenging and difficult task in the area of remote sensing. The existing methodologies rarely tackle the problem of 3-D object identification, like buildings, from a purely stochastic viewpoint. Our approach is based on a stochastic image interpretation model, which combines both 2-D and 3-D contextual information of the imaged scene. Building rooftop hypotheses are extracted using a contour-based grouping hierarchy that emanates from the principles of perceptual organization. We use a Markov random field model to describe the dependencies between all available hypotheses with regard to a globally consistent interpretation. The hypothesis verification step is treated as a stochastic optimization process that operates on the whole grouping hierarchy to find the globally optimal configuration for the locally interacting grouping hypotheses, providing also an estimate of the height of each extracted rooftop. This paper describes the main principles of our method and presents building detection results on a set of synthetic and airborne images. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) This paper studies the straight skeleton of polyhedra in three dimensions. We first address voxel-based polyhedra (polycubes), formed as the union of a collection of cubical (axis-aligned) voxels. We analyze the ways in which the skeleton may intersect each voxel of the polyhedron, and show that the skeleton may be constructed by a simple voxel-sweeping algorithm taking constant time per voxel. In addition, we describe a more complex algorithm for straight skeletons of voxel-based polyhedra, which takes time proportional to the area of the surfaces of the straight skeleton rather than the volume of the polyhedron. We also consider more general polyhedra with axis parallel edges and faces, and show that any n-vertex polyhedron of this type has a straight skeleton with O(n2) features. We provide algorithms for constructing the straight skeleton, with running time O(min(n2 logn;k logO(1) n)) where k is the output complexity. Next, we discuss the straight skeleton of a general non convex polyhedron. We show that it has an ambiguity issue, and suggest a consistent method to resolve it. We prove that the straight skeleton of a general polyhedron has a superquadratic complexity in the worst case. Finally, we report on an implementation of a simple algorithm for the general case. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) While many data sets carry geographic and temporal references, our ability to analyze these datasets lags behind our ability to collect them because of the challenges posed by both data complexity and tool scalability issues. This study develops a visual analytics approach that leverages human expertise with visual, computational, and cartographic methods to support the application of visual analytics to relatively large spatio-temporal, multivariate data sets. We develop and apply a variety of methods for data clustering, pattern searching, information visualization, and synthesis. By combining both human and machine strengths, this approach has a better chance to discover novel, relevant, and potentially useful information that is difficult to detect by any of the methods used in isolation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach by applying the Visual Inquiry Toolkit we developed to analyze a data set containing geographically referenced, time-varying and multivariate data for U.S. technology industries. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainRésumé : (auteur) Lidar 3D point cloud corresponds to the terrestrial topography, including true ground and objects belonging either to vegetated areas or to human made features. This paper deals with DTM (digital terrain model) production. First step filtering data into ground and off-ground points is based on a multi-resolution coarse-to-fine approach. The K-means algorithm is used in a hierarchical way that provides robust data filtering. The number of cluster splits is used to automatically qualify the filtering reliability. This point is rarely treated in previous works. Secondly, a regularization process over ground points generates an accurate DTM on a regular grid. The fine DTM is processed with ground points without using classical interpolation algorithms. In fact, a Markovian regularization minimizes a global energy that confronts the terrain regularity and the goodness of fit to the data. It also depends on the filtering reliability. Conclusive results are presented on vegetated and mountainous areas and provide realistic terrain models.
