[Termes IGN] température de l'airRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes the spatial interpolation of daily minimum air temperature using a feedforward backpropagation neural network. Simple network configurations were trained to predict minimum temperature using as inputs: (1) date and terrain variables; (2) temperature observations at a number of neighbouring locations; (3) date, terrain variables and neighbouring temperature observations. This is the first time that trend and spatial association are explicitly considered together when interpolating using a neural network. The internal weights given to different inputs to the network were analysed to estimate the degree of spatial correlation between neighbouring stations in addition to the most influential variables contributing to the underlying trend. The spatial distribution of daily minimum temperature was estimated with the greatest accuracy by a network trained on the most comprehensive data set (3). The best model for the prediction of temperature accounts for 93% of the variance, measured by the correlation between independent estimated and observed values over a full year. This is comparable to accuracies reported in the literature using other approaches such as ordinary kriging of the residuals of multi-variate linear regression or partial thin plate splines. An advantage of this method is that the guiding variables are not assumed necessarily to be linearly related with the data being interpolated, and combinative effects are taken into account. Analysis of the internal network weights confirms that the networks are able to select adaptively between trend and covariance components of the interpolation function. Example interpolated daily minimum temperature surfaces for a 100 km x 100 km area in Yorkshire, UK, were generated using the selected network architectures to illustrate the results achievable with an ANN. [Termes IGN] interpolation spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Dasymetric maps display statistical data in meaningful spatial zones. Such maps can be preferable to choropleth maps that show data by enumeration zones, because dasymetric zones more accurately represent underlying data distributions. Though dasymetric mapping has existed for well over a century, the methods for producing these maps have not been thoroughly examined. In contrast, research on areal interpolation has been more thorough and has examined methods of transferring data from one set of map zones to another, an issue that is applicable to dasymetric mapping. Inspired by this work, we tested five dasymetric mapping methods, including methods derived from work on areal interpolation. Dasymetric maps of six socio-economic variables were produced for a study area of 159 counties in the eastern US rising county choropleth data and ancillary land-use data. Both polygonal (vector) and grid (raster) dasymetric methods were tested. We evaluated map accuracy using both statistical analyses and visual presentations of error. A repeated-measures analysis of variance showed that the traditional limiting variable method had significantly lower error than the other four methods. In addition, polygon methods had lower error than their grid-based counterparts, though the difference was not statistically significant. Error maps largely supported the conclusions from the statistical analysis, while also presenting patterns of error that were not obvious from the statistics. Recently the use of a network of multiple GPS reference stations for generating carrier phase-based corrections has emerged with great promise for use in real-time environments. However, little research has been conducted on the distribution of these correction to potential GPS users located within, and surrounding, the network coverage area. This is an integrated part of real-time kinematic DGPS, and it must be adequately adressed before a pratical realization of the multi-reference station concept is implemented. The focus of this paper is to present a comprehensive summary of some of the multiple reference station methods, with specific attention directed toward the correction generation and dissemination processes. More specifically, the various multi-reference station methodologies have been categorized according to their underlying correction generation framework, but will be discusse in terms of the correction dissemination options presented by various authors. The four main categories of methods investigated in this paper are : (a) partial derivative algorithms, (b) linear interpolation algorithms, (c) condition adjustement algorithms and (d) virtual reference station methodologies.
