While the connectivity and efficiency of smart cities is important, the analysis of the impact of construction development and large projects in the city is crucial to decision and policy makers, before the project is approved. This book also presents an agenda for future investigations to address the need for advanced tools such as mobile scanners, Geospatial Artificial Intelligence, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Geospatial Augmented Reality apps, Light Detection, and Ranging in smart cities. Some of selected specific tools presented in this book are as a simulator for improving the smart parking practices by modelling drivers with activity plans, a bike optimization algorithm to increase the efficiency of bike stations, an agent-based model simulation of human mobility with the use of mobile phone datasets. This machine, hosted at the University of Manchester in the UK, is freely available under the auspices of the EU Flagship Human Brain Project. This book tells the story of the origins of the machine, its development and its deployment, and the immense software development effort that has gone into making it openly available and accessible to researchers and students the world over. It also presents exemplar applications from ‘Talk’, a SpiNNaker-controlled robotic exhibit at the Manchester Art Gallery as part of ‘The Imitation Game’, a set of works commissioned in 2016 in honour of Alan Turing, through to a way to solve hard computing problems using stochastic neural networks. The book concludes with a look to the future, and the SpiNNaker-2 machine which is yet to come. Note de contenu : 1- Origins

Note de contenu : Introduction générale

[Termes IGN] harmonique sphériqueRésumé : (auteur) Measurements of the spatio-temporal variations of Earth’s gravity field from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission have led to new insights into large spatial mass redistribution at secular, seasonal and subseasonal timescales. GRACE solutions from various processing centres, while adopting different processing strategies, result in rather coherent estimates. However, these solutions also exhibit random as well as systematic errors, with specific spatial patterns in the latter.
In order to dampen the noise and enhance the geophysical signals in the GRACE data, we propose an approach based on a data-driven spatio-temporal filter, namely the Multichannel Singular Spectrum Analysis (M-SSA). M-SSA is a data-adaptive, multivariate, and non-parametric method that simultaneously exploits the spatial and temporal correlations of geophysical fields to extract common modes of variability.
We perform an M-SSA analysis on 13 yr of GRACE spherical harmonics solutions from five different processing centres in a simultaneous setup. We show that the method allows us to extract common modes of variability between solutions, while removing solution-specific spatio-temporal errors that arise from the processing strategies. In particular, the method efficiently filters out the spurious north–south stripes, which are caused in all likelihood by aliasing, due to the imperfect geophysical correction models and low-frequency noise in measurements.
Comparison of the M-SSA GRACE solution with mass concentration (mascons) solutions shows that, while the former remains noisier, it does retrieve geophysical signals masked by the mascons regularization procedure.

[Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (auteur) The resolution achieved by current synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors provides a detailed visualization of urban areas. Spaceborne sensors such as TerraSAR-X can be used to analyze large areas at a very high resolution. In addition, repeated passes of the satellite give access to temporal and interferometric information on the scene. Because of the complex 3-D structure of urban surfaces, scatterers located at different heights (ground, building facade, and roof) produce radar echoes that often get mixed within the same radar cells. These echoes must be numerically unmixed in order to get a fine understanding of the radar images. This unmixing is at the core of SAR tomography. SAR tomography reconstruction is generally performed in two steps: 1) reconstruction of the so-called tomogram by vertical focusing, at each radar resolution cell, to extract the complex amplitudes (a 1-D processing) and 2) transformation from radar geometry to ground geometry and extraction of significant scatterers. We propose to perform the tomographic inversion directly in ground geometry in order to enforce spatial regularity in 3-D space. This inversion requires solving a large-scale nonconvex optimization problem. We describe an iterative method based on variable splitting and the augmented Lagrangian technique. Spatial regularizations can easily be included in this generic scheme. We illustrate, on simulated data and a TerraSAR-X tomographic data set, the potential of this approach to produce 3-D reconstructions of urban surfaces.
