[Termes IGN] reconnaissance de formesRésumé : (auteur) Range-based pedestrian recognition is instrumental towards the development of autonomous driving and driving assistance systems. This work introduces encoding methods for pedestrian recognition, based on statistical shape analysis of 3D LIDAR data. The proposed approach has two variants, based on the encoding of local shape descriptors either in a spatially agnostic or spatially sensitive fashion. The latter method derives more detailed cues, by enriching the ‘gross’ information reflected by overall statistics of local shape descriptors, with ‘fine-grained’ information reflected by statistics associated with spatial clusters. Experiments on artificial LIDAR datasets, which include challenging samples, as well as on a large scale dataset of real LIDAR data, lead to the conclusion that both variants of the proposed approach (i) obtain high recognition accuracy, (ii) are robust against low-resolution sampling, (iii) are robust against increasing distance, and (iv) are robust against non-standard shapes and poses. On the other hand, the spatially-sensitive variant is more robust against partial occlusion and bad clustering. [Termes IGN] programmation dynamiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This work addresses the generation of high quality digital surface models by fusing multiple depths maps calculated with the dense image matching method. The algorithm is adapted to very high resolution multi-view satellite images, and the main contributions of this work are in the multi-view fusion. The algorithm is insensitive to outliers, takes into account the matching quality indicators, handles non-correlated zones (e.g. occlusions), and is solved with a multi-directional dynamic programming approach. No geometric constraints (e.g. surface planarity) or auxiliary data in form of ground control points are required for its operation. Prior to the fusion procedures, the RPC geolocation parameters of all images are improved in a bundle block adjustment routine. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated on two VHR (Very High Resolution)-satellite image datasets (Pléiades, WorldView-3) revealing its good performance in reconstructing non-textured areas, repetitive patterns, and surface discontinuities. [Termes IGN] universitéRésumé : (Auteur) Ground filtering algorithms mainly focus on filtering LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) point clouds owing to their intrinsic characteristics to classify ground and non-ground points. However, the acquisition and processing of LiDAR data is still costly. Compared to LiDAR technology, UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) are cheap and easy to use. In this study, the performances of five widely used ground filtering algorithms (Progressive Morphological 1D/2D, Maximum Local Slope, Elevation Threshold with Expand Window, and Adaptive TIN) were investigated by conducting qualitative and quantitative evaluations on UAV-based point clouds. Evaluation results indicated that the Adaptive TIN algorithm presented the best performance. The result of the Adaptive TIN algorithm was interpolated by using a MATLAB script to generate the DTM (Digital Terrain Model). Field measurements indicated that using UAV-based point clouds may be a reasonable alternative for LiDAR data, depending on the characteristics of the study area. [Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (auteur) An optimal design of a geodetic network can fulfill the requested precision and reliability of the network, and decrease the expenses of its execution by removing unnecessary observations. The role of an optimal design is highlighted in deformation monitoring network due to the repeatability of these networks. The core design problem is how to define precision and reliability criteria. This paper proposes a solution, where the precision criterion is defined based on the precision of deformation parameters, i. e. precision of strain and differential rotations. A strain analysis can be performed to obtain some information about the possible deformation of a deformable object. In this study, we split an area into a number of three-dimensional finite elements with the help of the Delaunay triangulation and performed the strain analysis on each element. According to the obtained precision of deformation parameters in each element, the precision criterion of displacement detection at each network point is then determined. The developed criterion is implemented to optimize the observations from the Global Positioning System (GPS) in Skåne monitoring network in Sweden. The network was established in 1989 and straddled the Tornquist zone, which is one of the most active faults in southern Sweden. The numerical results show that 17 out of all 21 possible GPS baseline observations are sufficient to detect minimum 3 mm displacement at each network point. This article presents a novel approach to understanding the asymmetry in route choice (i.e., the degree to which people choose different walking routes for their outbound and return journeys). The study utilizes a large volume of traces of individual routes, captured using a smartphone application. The routes are aggregated to a regular grid, and matrix statistics are developed to estimate the aggregate degree of route asymmetry for different types of route (shortest, longest, weekday, weekend, etc.). The results suggest that people change their route approximately 15% of the time. Although this varied little when observing trips made at the weekend or on a weekday, people taking journeys that deviated substantially from the shortest possible path were 6 percentage points less likely to change their routes than those taking journeys that were closest to the shortest path (14 and 20% asymmetry, respectively). The absolute length also impacted on the asymmetry of journeys, but not as substantially. This result is important because, for the first time, it reports a correlation between deviation from shortest route and aggregate pedestrian choice.
