[Termes IGN] web des donnéesRésumé : (auteur) Academic libraries have always supported research across disciplines by integrating access to diverse contents and resources. They now have the opportunity to reinvent their role in facilitating interdisciplinary work by offering researchers new ways of sharing, curating, discovering, and linking research data. Spatial data and metadata support this process because location often integrates disciplinary perspectives, enabling researchers to make their own research data more discoverable, to discover data of other researchers, and to integrate data from multiple sources. The Center for Spatial Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and the UCSB Library are undertaking joint research to better enable the discovery of research data and publications. The research addresses the question of how to spatially enable data discovery in a setting that allows for mapping and analysis in a GIS while connecting the data to publications about them. It suggests a framework for an integrated data discovery mechanism and shows how publications may be linked to associated data sets exposed either directly or through metadata on Esri's Open Data platform. The results demonstrate a simple form of linking data to publications through spatially referenced metadata and persistent identifiers. This linking adds value to research products and increases their discoverability across disciplinary boundaries. [Termes IGN] SIG 3DRésumé : (auteur) The level of detail (LOD) of a 3D city model indicates the model’s grade and usability. However, there exist multiple valid variants of each LOD. As a consequence, the LOD concept is inconclusive as an instruction for the acquisition of 3D city models. For instance, the top surface of an LOD1 block model may be modelled at the eaves of a building or at its ridge height. Such variants, which we term geometric references, are often overlooked and are usually not documented in the metadata. Furthermore, the influence of a particular geometric reference on the performance of a spatial analysis is not known.
In response to this research gap, we investigate a variety of LOD1 and LOD2 geometric references that are commonly employed, and perform numerical experiments to investigate their relative difference when used as input for different spatial analyses. We consider three use cases (estimation of the area of the building envelope, building volume, and shadows cast by buildings), and compute the deviations in a Monte Carlo simulation.
The experiments, carried out with procedurally generated models, indicate that two 3D models representing the same building at the same LOD, but modelled according to different geometric references, may yield substantially different results when used in a spatial analysis. [Termes IGN] teneur totale en électronsRésumé : (éditeur) [...] In this month’s column, we take a look at the use of a smartphone app to collect GNSS ionospheric data. Why would you want to do that? In the experience of the developers of the app, GNSS receivers are often characterized by a complex, proprietary data interface that differs for each manufacturer. In practice, this leads to significant investments in understanding interfaces and software tools. Human operators must familiarize themselves with the commands used to configure each receiver as well as with proprietary graphical user interfaces and tools specific to each receiver. The authors’ app-centric approach provides a software framework and output format that remain the same for different receivers. Receiver-specific commands are configurable within the app, so users can easily attach new receivers while reusing the existing infrastructures for data collection and processing. And smartphones have more than enough power and connectivity to do the job and can be easily moved from site to site. The smartphone as a handheld device to help scientists study the ionosphere? Probably not even Clive Sinclair foresaw that. [Termes IGN] image multicapteurRésumé : (Auteur) Each year, multiple catastrophic events impact vulnerable populations around the planet. Assessing the damage caused by these events in a timely and accurate manner is crucial for efficient execution of relief efforts to help the victims of these calamities. Given the low accessibility of the damaged areas, high-resolution optical satellite imagery has emerged as a valuable source of information to quickly asses the extent of damage by manually analyzing the pre- and postevent imagery of the region. To make this analysis more efficient, multiple learning techniques using a variety of image representations have been proposed. However, most of these representations are prone to variabilities in capture angle, sun location, and seasonal variations. To evaluate these representations in the context of damage detection, we present a benchmark of 86 pre- and postevent image pairs with respective reference data derived from United Nation Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT) assessment maps, spanning a total area of 4665 km2 from 11 different locations around the world. The technical contribution of our work is a novel image representation based on shape distributions of image patches encoded with locality-constrained linear coding. We empirically demonstrate that our proposed representation provides an improvement of at least 5%, in equal error rate, over alternate approaches. Finally, we present a thorough robustness analysis of the considered representational schemes, with respect to capture-angle variabilities and multiple sensor combinations. It replaces the geographic distance by time distance and distorts the underlyingmap accordingly. By distorting themap, time cartogramsmay give a more intuitive and clear picture of travelling-times. The distortion of the map, however, can make time cartograms harder to recognize and use. Although cartograms are becoming widespread in use, very little is known about their usability. This study focuses on the usability of centered time cartograms: time cartograms that visualize travellingtimes from a fixed starting location to other destinations in a region. We created several centered time cartograms to answer spatio-temporal questions related to the Dutch railway network. Two experiments were performed: a laboratory test and an online survey. In the laboratory test, we used eye-tracking, thinking aloud, and video-recording to compare four different designs of centered time cartograms to find out which one (or combination) of these performs better in answering spatiotemporal questions and thus, to establish a favorable design strategy for these cartograms. In the online survey, centered time cartograms were evaluated against a geographic and schematic map for accuracy, response time, and preference. The first experiment suggested that among various designs, the centered time cartogram with emphasized railroads is the most preferred design and the centered time cartogram without railroads is the least preferred. The second experiment indicated that overall, centered time cartograms perform better than the two other solutions in performing spatio-temporal tasks, particularly when the task has a dominant time-related component.
