This article introduces an autonomous technique for computing protection levels based on error isotropy that, unlike conventional methods, adapts in real-time to ranging error size and also handles multiple-fault conditions. [Termes IGN] réseau de drainageRésumé : (Auteur) Loci of extreme curvature of the topographic surface may be defined by the derivation function (T) depending on the first-, second-, and third-order partial derivatives of elevation. The loci may partially describe ridge and thalweg lines. The first- and second-order partial derivatives are commonly calculated from a digital elevation model (DEM) by fitting the second-order polynomial to a 3times3 window. This approach cannot be used to compute the third-order partial derivatives and T. We deduced formulae to estimate the first-, second-, and third-order partial derivatives from a DEM fitting the third-order polynomial to a 5times5 window. The polynomial is approximated to elevation values of the window. This leads to a local denoising that may enhance calculations. Under the same grid size of a DEM and root mean square error (RMSE) of elevation, calculation of the second-order partial derivatives by the method developed results in significantly lower RMSE of the derivatives than that using the second-order polynomial and the 3times3 window. An RMSE expression for the derivation function is deduced. The method proposed can be applied to derive any local topographic variable, such as slope gradient, aspect, curvatures, and T. Treatment of a DEM by the method developed demonstrated that T mapping may not substitute regional logistic algorithms to detect ridge/thalweg networks. However, the third-order partial derivatives of elevation can be used in digital terrain analysis, particularly, in landform classifications. [Termes IGN] traitement du signalRésumé : (Auteur) An algorithm for considering time-correlated errors in a Kalman filter is presented. The algorithm differs from previous implementations in that it does not suffer from numerical problems; does not contain inherent time latency or require reinterpretation of Kalman filter parameters, and gives full consideration to additive white noise that is often still present but ignored in previous implementations. Simulation results indicate that the application of the new algorithm yields more realistic and therefore useful state and covariance information than the standard implementation. Results from a field test of the algorithm applied to the problem of kinematic differential GPS demonstrate that the algorithm provides slightly pessimistic covariance estimates whereas the standard Kalman filter provides optimistic covariance estimates. [Termes IGN] traitement du signalRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is an active remote sensing technique providing range data as 3D point clouds. This paper aims at presenting a survey of the literature related to such techniques, with emphasis on the new sensors called full-waveform lidar systems. Indeed, an emitted laser pulse interacts with complex natural and man-made objects leading to a temporal distortion of the returned energy profile. The new technology of full-waveform laser scanning systems permits one to digitize the complete waveform of each backscattered pulse. Full-waveform lidar data give more control to an end-user in the interpretation process of the physical measurement and provide additional information about the structure and the physical backscattering characteristics of the illuminated surfaces. In this paper, the theoretical principles of full-waveform airborne laser scanning are first described. Afterwards, a review of the main sensors as well as signal processing techniques are presented. We then discuss the interpretation of full-waveform measures with special interest on vegetated and urban areas.
