A first prototype demonstrated a 1–2 mm accuracy in radial distance measurement in a ground-based experiment in 1995. The first aircraft experiment was conducted in 1998, over a small area (1 km2) equipped with a network of 64 benchmarks. The instrument was modified before that experiment, in order to minimize echo superimposition due to the high density of benchmarks. New data processing algorithms have been developed, for the deconvolution of strongly overlapped echoes and a high a priori uncertainty in the aircraft flight path, and for the estimation of benchmark coordinates. A special methodology has been developed for the parameterization of these algorithms and of outlier detection tests. From a total of 2×104 pseudo-range measurements, that have been acquired from two flights composed of 30 legs each, only 3×103 remain after outlier detection. A positioning accuracy of 1.5 cm in the vertical coordinate (2.1 cm in the difference between the two flights) has been achieved. It is shown that the errors are normally distributed, with a nearly zero mean, and are consistent with the a posteriori uncertainty. It is also shown that the accuracy is limited mainly by the sensitivity of the photodetector used for this experiment (due to reduced response time). Another limiting factor is the effect of aircraft attitude changes during the measurements, which produces additional uncertainties in absolute distance measurements. It is planned to test new photodetectors with high internal gains. These should provide, in future experiments with smaller benchmark density, an improvement in signal-to-noise ratio of a factor of 5–10, leading to sub-centimeter vertical positioning accuracy. [Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) This study examined the complementarity of radar and optical data for feature identification. Spaceborne radar and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM ) multispectral data sets were assessed independently and in combination to classify a site near Wad Medani, Sudan. Radar processing procedures included speckle reduction, texture extraction and postprocessing smoothing. Relative accuracy of the resultant classifications was established by comparison to ground truth information derived from field visitation. Neither speckle filtering nor postclassification smoothing were improvements over the poor results obtained with the unfiltered, original radar data. Texture measures were significant improvements over the original data (20 percent overall accuracy increase) and several, but not all, individual classes had excellent results. Landsat TM had good overall results (80 percent correct) but considerable spectral confusion between urban and bare soil. Combination of radar with Landsat TM greatly improved results, achieving near perfect classification of all individual classes. The systematic strategy of this study, determination of the best individual method before introducing the next procedure, itas effective in managing a complex set of analysis possibilities. [Termes IGN] récepteur GPSRésumé : (Auteur) The Global Positioning System (GPS) has come into widespread use both the military and the civil community. There is a growing awareness of the limitations and vulnerabilities of the GPS signals, system provider and user equipement. These limitations not only affect the accuracy of the system, but also its reliability, integrity and availability. A number of ground-and space-based augmentation sytems have been implemented to overcome or reduce these limitations. The augmentation systems provide differential corrections to improve positioning accuracy and integrity messages to inform a user wether or not it is safe to use GPS for positioning and timing. Despite these augementations, however, GPS remains vulnerable to a number of intentional and unintotional disruptions. These disruptions range from radio frequency interference to even intentional physical damage to the system. In September 2001 the US Department of Transportation released a study on the vulnerabilities of GPS. This study is available from www.naven.uscg.gov. Copyright Geoinformatics. [Termes IGN] valeur efficaceRésumé : (Auteur) We present a new stochastic theory for delay-Doppler mapping of the ocean surface for bistatic scattering. This stochastic theory should complement nicely the previous theories for the Global Positioning System (GPS) reflected signals from ocean surfaces, especially that of Zavorotny and Voronovich. We quantify the Doppler spread of the reflected signal before interpreting the delay. Our theoretical results compare very well to Doppler spectra computed using data collected during an airborne campaign. The bandwidth of the spectra is linked to the geometry and to the ocean roughness. The bulk of the Doppler spread is caused by the rms slope and not by the surface orbital velocity. Our stochastic theory is generalized to include the delay mapping made possible by the existence of the pseudorandom noise code on the GPS L-band carrier. These results can be seen as a generalization of Woodward's theorem for FM signals to delay-Doppler analysis of more complicated signals. Our formulation is amenable to inversion for the determination of geophysical parameters such as surface wind vector and mean sea level. Another novelty in our approach is the inclusion of the sea state.
