Airborne lidar (2m nominal posting) was collected at a flying height of 1207 meters above ground level (AGL) using an Optech ALTM (Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper) 1210 system. Unique to this study are the reference point elevations. Rather than using an interpolation approach for gathering observed elevations at reference points, the x-y coordinates of lidar points were located in the field and these elevations were surveyed. Using both total-station-based and rapid-static GPS techniques, observed vertical heights were measured at each reference lidar posting. The variability of vertical accuracy was evaluated for six land-cover categories. Root-mean-squared error (RmsE) values ranged from a low of 17 to 19 cm (pavement, low grass, and evergreen forests) to a high of 26 cm (deciduous forests). The unique error assessment of lidar postings also allowed for the creation of an error budget model. The observed lidar elevation error was decomposed into errors from lidar system measurements, horizontal displacement, interpolation error, and surveyor error. A cross-validation approach was used to assess the observed interpolated lidar elevation error for each field-verified reference point. In order of decreasing importance, the lidar system measurements were the dominant source of error-followed by interpolation error, horizontal displacement error, and surveyor error. Observed elevation error in steeper slopes (e.g., 25°) was estimated to be twice as large as those on low slopes (e.g., 1.5°). [Termes IGN] prédictionRésumé : (Auteur) It is well established that elevations determined by global position systems are above reference ellipsoid heights and should be corrected for geoid undulation to determine the orthometric height or mean sea-level elevation. The paper describes research performed at Iowa State University in cooperation with Iowa Department of Transportation to determine the local geoid, N1 with + 2 cm accuracv for a countywide area, study its variation with time, and develop a method to predict the future local geoid with + 2 cm accuracy. This paper describes the data collection method, provides the results of three observations at six-month intervals for studying the variation of N with time; explains a method developed for predicting N1 and determining agreement with a fourth observation; and describes a procedure for establishing elevation control by global positioning systems for leveling and for establishing control in a real-time kinematic global positioning systems project. [Termes IGN] rivièreRésumé : (Auteur) The growing concern about our planet's water resources, coupled with the economically driven decrease in ground-based gauge measurements, has focused attention on the possibility of using space-based data sets for remote measurements of river and lake heights. The most direct measurements of inland water heights are obtained from satellite altimeters, with long time series of such observations having been built up over the post decade. ESA has been developing new global river and lake monitoring products, including an expert processing system, with the help of De Montfort University (UK). A seven-year-long time series of samples was distributed to the hydrology community at the CNES Hydrology from Space Workshop in Toulouse last October in order to validate the user requirements. They responded very favorably and are now impatient to get their hands on a decade of global river-and lake-level products, as well as the latest near-real-time products coming from ESA's Envisat mission.
