[Termes IGN] WiFiRésumé : (Auteur) A common assumption in GNSS receiver design is that the coherent integration time should be less than a few dozens of milliseconds. This makes perfect sense for today’s commercial receivers due to data bit transitions, oscillator jitter, and user dynamics. However, a coherent integration time of several seconds would mitigate three important indoor positioning problems: multipath, cross-correlation false locks, and the squaring loss. Extending the integration time has a price, typically requiring an assistance data link providing data bits (or the use of pilot signals), a stable oscillator, and a sophisticated GNSS/INS integration to compensate for non-linear user motion. This column describes how those issues have been solved and the resulting benefits as demonstrated by a recently built prototype with a sensitivity of around 1.5 dBHz , more than 10 decibels beyond the current state of the art. Then, we would only need measurements to any four satellites to determine our position perfectly. Unfortunately, the receiver must deal with measurements and models that have some degree of error, which gets propagated into the position solution. Furthermore, the geometrical arrangement of the satellites observed by the receiver their elevation angles and azimuths can significantly affect the precision and accuracy of the receiver's solution, typically degrading them.
It is common to express the degradation or dilution by dilution of precision (DOP) factors. Multiplying the measurement and model uncertainty by an appropriate DOP value gives an estimate of the position error. These estimates are reasonable if the measurement and model errors are truly random. However, it turns out that this simple geometrical relationship breaks down if some model errors are systematic. If that systematic error is a constant bias and if it is common to all pseudoranges measured simultaneously, then the receiver can easily estimate it along with its clock offset, leaving the position solution unaffected. But if the errors are systematically different for the different simultaneous pseudoranges, as is typically the case when trying to correct for ionospheric and tropospheric effects, these errors propagate into the receiver solution in a way that is fundamentally different from the way that random errors propagate. This means that in addition to DOP, we need a companion measure of systematic effects. In this month's column, Dennis Milbert introduces just such a measure the error scale factor or ESF. ESF, combined with DOP, forms a hybrid error model that appears to more realistically portray the real-world GPS precisions and accuracies we actually experience. [Termes IGN] VanuatuRésumé : (auteur) Satellite altimetry provides an ocean mean sea surface (MSS) map with global coverage and overall excellent precision. However, in some areas, like the Vanuatu archipelago, the coverage and resolution of this tool are not sufficient to correctly map the short scale undulations of the sea surface, due to numerous islands and to strong lithospheric and mantle heterogeneities. New applications such as seafloor geodesy may require local mean surface representation with improved resolution in specific areas. We used sea surface height collected with kinematic GPS during three different cruises in 2004, 2006 and 2007 to reconstruct a homogeneous sea surface map around Santo Island, Vanuatu. We assess the accuracy of this GPS-derived local sea surface to 6–19 cm and evaluate the quality of existing altimetry and gravity-derived MSSs on the Vanuatu archipelago. Observed short scale undulations are interpreted as due to local geodynamics. [Termes IGN] positionnement par GPSRésumé : (auteur) Tie vectors (TVs) between co-located space geodetic instruments are essential for combining terrestrial reference frames (TRFs) realised using different techniques. They provide relative positioning between instrumental reference points (RPs) which are part of a global geodetic network such as the international terrestrial reference frame (ITRF). This paper gathers the set of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI)–global positioning system (GPS) local ties performed at the observatory of Medicina (Northern Italy) during the years 2001–2006 and discusses some important aspects related to the usage of co-location ties in the combinations of TRFs. Two measurement approaches of local survey are considered here: a GPS-based approach and a classical approach based on terrestrial observations (i.e. angles, distances and height differences). The behaviour of terrestrial local ties, which routinely join combinations of space geodetic solutions, is compared to that of GPS-based local ties. In particular, we have performed and analysed different combinations of satellite laser ranging (SLR), VLBI and GPS long term solutions in order to (i) evaluate the local effects of the insertion of the series of TVs computed at Medicina, (ii) investigate the consistency of GPS-based TVs with respect to space geodetic solutions, (iii) discuss the effects of an imprecise alignment of TVs from a local to a global reference frame. Results of ITRF-like combinations show that terrestrial TVs originate the smallest residuals in all the three components. In most cases, GPS-based TVs fit space geodetic solutions very well, especially in the horizontal components (N, E). On the contrary, the estimation of the VLBI RP Up component through GPS technique appears to be awkward, since the corresponding post fit residuals are considerably larger. Besides, combination tests including multi-temporal TVs display local effects of residual redistribution, when compared to those solutions where Medicina TVs are added one at a time. Finally, the combination of TRFs turns out to be sensitive to the orientation of the local tie into the global frame.
