[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Editeur) Users have come to expect instant access to up-to-date geographical information, with global coverage-presented at widely varying levels of detail, as digital and paper products; customisable data that can readily combined with other geographic information. These requirements present an immense challenge to those supporting the delivery of such services (National Mapping Agencies (NMA), Government Departments, and private business. Generalisation of Geographic Information : Cartographic Modelling and Applications provides detailed review of state of the art technologies associated with these challenges, including the most recent developments in cartometric analysis techniques able to support high levels of automation among multi scale derivation techniques.
The book illustrates the application of these ideas within existing and emerging technologies. In addition to providing a comprehensive theoretical underpinning, the book demonstrates how theoretical developments have translated into commercial systems deployed within NMAs.
The book explores relevance of open systems in support of collaborative research and open source web based map services.Note de contenu : Preface.

[Termes IGN] positionnement par géodésie spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Precise positioning and timing services have evolved considerably over the past decades. They now represent a vital part of the modern information infrastructure and are entering everyday life. This fantastic growth has been made possible by GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). These systems are widely used, not only in professional applications but also, by enabling personal navigation (e.g. car navigation or hand-held GPS navigators), in the mass market. Futhermore, a number of key communication technologies like GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) mobile networks rely on timing information provided by GNSS. At present there two GNSS : the US Global Positioning Sytem (GPS) and the Russian GLONASS (GLObal NAvigation Satellite System). [Termes IGN] problème inverseRésumé : (Auteur) In many geoscientific applications, one needs to recover the quantities of interest from indirect observations blurred by colored noise. Such quantities often correspond to the values of bounded linear functionals acting on the solution of some observation equation. For example, various quantities are derived from harmonic coefficients of the Earth’s gravity potential. Each such coefficient is the value of the corresponding linear functional. The goal of this paper is to discuss new means to use information about the noise covariance structure, which allows order-optimal estimation of the functionals of interest and does not involve a covariance operator directly in the estimation process. It is done on the basis of a balancing principle for the choice of the regularization parameter, which is new in geoscientific applications. A number of tests demonstrate its applicability. In particular, we could find appropriate regularization parameters by knowing a small part of the gravitational field on the Earth’s surface with high precision and reconstructing the rest globally by downward continuation from satellite data.
