[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) This paper is concerned with building up methodological guidelines for modelling urban land-use change through Geographical Information Systems, remote sensing imagery and Bayesian probabilistic methods. A medium-sized town in the west of Sào Paulo State, Bauru, was adopted as a case study. Its urban structure was converted into a 100m x 100m resolution grid and transition probabilities were calculated for each grid cell by means of the 'weights of evidence' statistical method and upon the basis of the information related to the technical infrastructure and socio-economic aspects of the town. The probabilities obtained from there fed a cellular automaton simulation model-DINAMICA-developed by the Centre for Remote Sensing of the Federal University of Minas Gerals (CSR-UFNIG), based on stochastic transition algorithms. Different simulation outputs for the case study town in the period 1979-1988 were generated, and statistical validation tests were then conducted for the best results, employing a multiple resolution fitting procedure. This modelling experiment revealed the plausibility of adopting Bavesian empirical methods based on the available knowledge of technical infrastructure and socio-economic status to simulate urban land-use change. It indicates their possible further applicability for generating forecasts of growth trends both for Brazilian cities and cities world-wide. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (Auteur) Earth observation data are becoming available at increasingly finer resolutions. Sensors already in existence (IKONOS, Quickbird, SPOT 5, Orbview) or due to be launched in the near future will reach 1-5 m resolution. These very high resolution (VHR) data will provide more details of the urban areas, but it seems evident that they will create additional problems in terms of information extraction using automatic classification. In this framework, this paper examines the potential of the spectral/textural approach to improve the classification accuracy of intra-urban land cover types. The utility of the textural analysis was measured in comparison with multi-spectral per-pixel classifications. Haralick's second-order statistics were applied to the co-occurrence matrix. Four texture indices with six window sizes created from panchromatic images were tested on images at high to very high resolutions (10-1 m). The results show that the optimal index improving the global classification accuracy is the homogeneity measure, with a 7 x 7 window size. Moreover, for 1 m images, texture measure of homogeneity allows one to decrease the shadows. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, a set of multi-spectral images were used to locate and identify the irregular settlements zones in the Athens metropolitan area. To achieve this goal, indexes-Brightness Index and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index-and supervised classification are computed and applied to the images. In order to locate and identify these regions, common biophysical characteristics related to the urban and suburban landscape structures were identified. Five types of biophysical class were distinguished: (1) inner dense city with high buildings and absence of vegetation; (2) suburban areas with recent construction of buildings and absence of vegetation ; (3) green suburban areas; (4) high-density vegetation zones; and (5) recent forest fire regions. Some limitations are presented and discussed due to confusion of land-cover types between bare land and recent constructed areas, or between various types of vegetation and some urban green zones. Results are integrated within a Geographical Information System (GIS), allowing the user to check the legaI situation of the classified areas using the Urban Plan of Athens (1983-1995) documentation. This facilitates a proposal and representation of topology of irregular settlements. Such techniques might be very fruitful for developing countries or recently industrialized ones to identify speciflic irregular settlements. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Different processes shaping land-use patterns are observed at different scales. In land-use modelling, scale can influence the measurement and quantitative description of land-use patterns and can therefore significantly impact the behaviour of model parameters that describe land-use change processes. We present results of a rigorous sensitivity analysis of a cellular urban land-usechange model, SLEUTH, testing its performance in response to varying cell resolutions. Specifically, we examine the behaviour of each type of urban growth rule across different cell sizes, and explore the model's ability to capture growth rates and patterns across scales. Our findings suggest that SLEUTH's sensitivity to scale extend beyond issues of calibration. While the model was able to capture the rate of growth reliably across all cell sizes, differences in its ability to simulate growth patterns across scales were substantial. We also observed significant differences in the sensitivity of the growth rules across cell sizes, indicating that SLEUTH may perform better at certain cell sizes than at others. These findings emphasize the importance of scale considerations in land-use-change modelling research, particularly in terms of determining the relevant and appropriate scales of enquiry for the processes being simulated.
