[Termes IGN] spectroscopieRésumé : (Auteur) We identify canopy species in a Hawaiian tropical forest using supervised classification applied to airborne hyperspectral imagery acquired with the Carnegie Airborne Observatory-Alpha system. Nonparametric methods (linear and radial basis function support vector machine, artificial neural network, and k-nearest neighbor) and parametric methods (linear, quadratic, and regularized discriminant analysis) are compared for a range of species richness values and training sample sizes. We find a clear advantage in using regularized discriminant analysis, linear discriminant analysis, and support vector machines. No unique optimal classifier was found for all conditions tested, but we highlight the possibility of improving support vector machine classification with a better optimization of its free parameters. We also confirm that a combination of spectral and spatial information increases accuracy of species classification: we combine segmentation and species classification from regularized discriminant analysis to produce a map of the 17 discriminated species. Finally, we compare different methods to assess spectral separability and find a better ability of Bhattacharyya distance to assess separability within and among species. The results indicate that species mapping is tractable in tropical forests when using high-fidelity imaging spectroscopy. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) Analyzing the formation mechanism of hotspot swells enhances our understanding of intraplate volcanism and the underlying geodynamical processes. The two main hypotheses for the origin of the archetypal Hawaiian swell are thermal lithospheric thinning, and dynamic support by an ascending plume. Any successful model would have to be able to simultaneously explain the swell topography and the corresponding geoid anomaly. In simple models of isostatic compensation, the geoid-to-topography ratio (GTR) is linearly related to the depth of the compensating mass; therefore it is often considered a fundamental parameter to assess swell support mechanisms. Previous estimates for the geoid-to-topography ratio (GTR) of the Hawaiian swell however are biased towards low values by incomplete removal of the effects of volcanic loading and lithospheric flexure. In order to resolve these issues, we here apply a continuous wavelet transform, which allows resolution of lateral variations of the GTR at various spatial scales. In a series of synthetic tests, the robustness of this approach and its power to identify the origin of hotspot swells are established. With 8 m/km on the youngest part of the chain, the recovered GTR agrees well with the predictions for dynamic support, therefore ruling out thermal rejuvenation as an important mechanism. We also find that the depth of the compensating mass decays by 20 km over a distance of 500 km from Hawaii to Kauai, and identify sublithospheric erosion by small-scale convection in the ponded plume material as a viable mechanism to support this decay. [Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (Auteur) The climate of the United States Northern Great Plains region is highly variable. Modelling of agriculture in this region and similar locations depends on the availability and quality of satellite and ground data for agro-climate variables. We evaluated tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) multi-satellite preparation analysis (TMPA) precipitation, atmospheric infrared sounder (AIRS) surface air temperature, and AIRS relative air humidity (RH). A significant bias was found within the temperature and RH products and no bias but an insufficient rain event detection skill in the precipitation product (probability of detection 0.3). A linear correction of the temperature product removed the bias as well as lowered the root mean square deviation (RMSD). The bias-corrections for RH led to increased RMSD or worse correlation. For precipitation, the correlation between the satellite product and ground data improved if cumulative precipitation or only precipitation during the growing season was used. Here we explore tradeoffs between potential gains in mapping accuracy with computational costs by integrating structural and intensity surface models extracted from LiDAR data with Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery and evaluating the degree to which TM, LiDAR, and LiDAR-TM fusion data discriminated land covers in the rapidly urbanizing region of Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. Using supervised maximum likelihood (ML) and classification tree (CT) methods, we classified TM data at 30 m and LiDAR data and LiDAR-TM fusions at 1 m, 5 m, 10 m, 15 m and 30 m resolutions. We assessed the relative contributions of LiDAR structural and intensity surface models to classification map accuracy and identified optimal spatial resolution of LiDAR surface models for large-area assessments of urban land cover. ML classification of 1 m LiDAR-TM fusions using both structural and intensity surface models increased total accuracy by 32% compared to LiDAR alone and by 8% over TM at 30 m. Fusion data using all LiDAR surface models improved class discrimination of spectrally similar forest, farmland, and managed clearings and produced the highest total accuracies at 1 m, 5 m, and 10 m resolutions (87.2%, 86.3% and 85.4%, respectively). At all resolutions of fusion data and using either ML or CT classifier, the relative contribution of the LiDAR structural surface models (canopy height and normalized digital surface model) to classification accuracy is greater than the intensity surface. Our evaluation of tradeoffs between data volume and thematic map accuracy for this study system suggests that a spatial resolution of 5 m for LiDAR surface models best balances classification performance and the computational challenges posed by large-area assessments of land cover. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents an algorithmic approach to the problem of finding symmetries in building footprints, which is motivated by map generalization tasks such as symmetry-preserving building simplification and symmetry-aware grouping and aggregation. Moreover, symmetries in building footprints may be used for landmark selection and building classification. The presented method builds up on existing methods for symmetry detection in vector data that use algorithms for string matching. It detects both mirror symmetries and repetitions of geometric structures. In addition to the existing vector-based methods, the new method finds partial symmetries in polygons while allowing for small geometric errors and, based on a least-squares approach, computes optimally adjusted mirror axes and assesses their quality. Finally, the problem of grouping symmetry relations is addressed with an algorithm that finds mirror axes that are almost collinear. The presented approach was tested on a large building dataset of the metropolitan Boston area and its results were compared with results that were manually generated in an empirical test. The symmetry relations that the participants of the test considered most important were found by the algorithm. Future work will deal with the integration of information on symmetry relations into algorithms for map generalization.
