[Termes IGN] MNS SRTMRésumé : (Auteur) We present a nonhierarchical electromagnetic (EM) land surface classification method through the integration of satellite multispectral high-resolution optical and polarized radar images of central Alberta near the Saskatchewan border. We implement a conventional supervised land surface classification method and a principal component analysis to a QuickBird image. The EM properties are then assigned to the classified surfaces to produce hierarchical EM land classification maps. To further classify a hierarchical EM surface (i.e., dielectric constant), we calculate the root-mean-square surface height with a Shuttle Radar Topography Mission 3-arc-second digital elevation model and the temperatures from a thermal band of a Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper image. We also calculate the backscattering coefficients from the Advanced Land Observing Satellite Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar image. Using these estimated values, we calculate the intrinsic weighting factors with the Dubois (1995) model for less vegetated land areas and the Ulaby (1986) model for open water areas. By applying these weighting factors to the hierarchical EM surface, we generate a nonhierarchical higher resolution EM surface map of the study area. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) Injury from causes such as falls, traffic accidents, or violence is a major public health issue globally. Injury prevention research aims to identify vulnerable populations and places by analyzing the spatial patterns of demographic and socio-economic risk factors associated with elevated injury rates. The stakeholders in injury prevention and control are often distributed across government and public health institutions, non-profits, and even the private sector (e.g. insurance firms). While this situation calls for distributed, online research tools, their implementation may conflict with health data confidentiality and license limitations for socio-economic data. In this article, we present the Online Injury Atlas for Ontario, which was designed with the explicit goal of making use of, and contributing to, the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure. We propose a service-based architecture that integrates publicly accessible map services with protected data layers. Thereby, we demonstrate the benefits of using spatial data infrastructures alongside private data at different levels of protection. In addition, we discuss the extensive data processing needs and specific cartographic design requirements of a Web atlas in the health and social sciences domain. [Termes IGN] logiciel libreRésumé : (Auteur) Digital web atlases can incorporate perspectives derived from diverse participants or communities to create and present narratives using qualitative and quantitative information structured around a set of maps as organizational and analytical tools. Development of such an atlas requires a transdisciplinary team tor contend with complexity in subject matter, technologies, and project dynamics. Technologies required are potentially as much an obstacle to some potential participants as they may be necessary to the fulfilment of a project’s outreach and communication goals. This paper describes the Cybercartographic Atlas of the Lake Huron Treaty Relationship Process, the open source atlas toolkit used to implement it, and features of the toolkit that are intended to encourage transdisciplinary participation. The discussion explicitly addresses issues related to the iterative processes, at multiple scales, required to develop atlas projects within an academic research setting while using and creating open source software. [Termes IGN] photographie aérienneRésumé : (Auteur) Complete topographic mapping coverage of Canada is essential as a basis for the sustainable development of its resources. In 2000, the unmapped areas at a scale of 1:50,000 in the Arctic islands in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, amount to over 800,000 square kilometres, equivalent to approximately 1,500 map sheets. In 2003, a northern mapping project was launched to complete the topographic map coverage in Northern Canada. In order to explore all possible scenarios, the Centre for Topographic Information – Sherbrooke (CTIS) worked closely with the Canadian Space Agency and the private sector on various feasibility tests. After investigating multiple data sources, the combination of existing aerial photography, LANDSAT 7 ETM+, SPOT5/HRS imagery, interferometric pairs of ERS 1-2 tandem and RADARSAT-2 imagery were chosen for planimetric data and Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED) acquisition. In 2004, mapping contracts were carried out on a test site and positive results from these tests initiated the production of the unmapped areas of Canada. The planimetric vector data are available on the GeoGratis Web portal and the CDED data sets are available on the GeoBase Web portal.
