[Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) Spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems have the ability to provide high resolution information on land cover characteristics under adverse conditions such as darkness or cloud cover. The use of multiple frequencies and multiple polarizations yields better classification accuracies. The results of various land cover classification algorithms using Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-C) SAR data as applied to a site in Suncook, New Hampshire, are described in this paper. Three classification models were developed and tested: minimum distance classification, maximum a posteriori probability classification, and neural network classification. Using the available ground truth information, land cover was classified into five distinct regions: water, swamp, sand, trees, and grass. All three methods were applied to the same site and results compared. The maximum a posteriori probability approach yielded the highest overall classification accuracy on a pixelbypixel basis. Although the minimum distance approach was simpler than the maximum a posteriori approach, its performance was not as good as the latter since it did not use the covariance information between the data channels. The neural network approach performed well and its results were comparable to the maximum a posteriori approach when the variance of the data was small; however, its performance degraded rapidly when the variance of the data was high. [Termes IGN] Thematic MapperRésumé : (Auteur) Coastal areas comprise some of the world's most important and sensitive ecosystems. Although optical remote sensing systems have demonstrated an ability to map land cover in many coastal environments, spectral confusion has also been reported. The parameters of SAR imagery suggest that combinations of SAR and optical data may improve land-cover classification accuracy. Seven satellite SAR data sets were merged with TM data using four techniques. These were tested by classifying 11 upland and wetland land covers in a rapidly urbanizing coastal area of the northeast United States. Not all SABITM combinations bettered the accuracy obtained using TM data alone. In general, simple techniques improved accuracy more than did complex image merge methods. Although one SAR image proved superior overall, improvement in detection accuracy varied among individual land-cover categories and SAR data. The results point to the possible benefits of hierarchical-layered classifications. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Many studies have used remote sensing to detect forest conversion activities in the Amazon for the purposes of directing policy or generating data for environmental modeling. However, this technology has yet to be applied towards forest law enforcement in the region. In this study we design a violation detection system for Areas of Permanent Preservation using Landsat TM data and GIS, and test it in a logging town in the Eastern Amazon. Our detection methodology generates a simple forest cover map using unsupervised classification techniques, as well as river maps derived directly from remotely sensed data. Data produced through this detection system include a forest cover map, waterway map, map of Areas of Permanent Preservation, and violation map. We include a discussion of the advantages and limitations of each of these data products for law enforcement purposes in the region. Violations were detected in 60% of all Areas of Permanent Preservation in pastures and other cleared properties, showing extremely low law abidance once deforestation occurs. Overall, violation detection resulted in accuracy levels of 88.6%, illustrating the viability of efficiently monitoring land cover for law enforcement purposes in the Amazon. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Many studies have helped us understand where blowdowns occur, how forests regenerate and respond to large disturbances. However, few studies have analysed how physical and biological factors affect blowdowns or interact with one another to determine susceptibility to blowdown. These factors range from the natural physical setting to past disturbances, and human-related features, such as roads and timber harvest units. These factors were examined in this study. Patches of the blown-down forest were mapped for the 1997 Routt-Divide blowdown, which affected over 10 000 ha of subalpine forest in north-central Colorado. A systematic sampling scheme was used to extract information on predictors for sampling points inside and outside the blowdown. Data on predictors were used in Classification and Regression Trees (CART) and logistic regression to model blowdown occurrence and severity. Two models were applied, and both were able to predict with an overall success rate of 75% or more. These two models produced similar results, showing that the Routt-Divide blowdown was most influenced by factors pertaining to the physical setting : distance to the Continental Divide, wind exposure, elevation, aspect, and cover type. Surprisingly, soil permeability and water-holding capacity and distance to natural edges (e.g. forest meadow) were not correlated significantly with the blowdown pattern.
