The specifications extend the OGC 3D standard CityGML to align it to national requirements. Although CityGML offers a solid base for 3D information modeling, we have met the problems of CityGML being a generic standard resulting in too much flexibility and in some cases ambiguity when implementing it at a national level. Based on experiences and use cases, we refined and extended the CityGML specifications into implementation specifications for our Dutch context. We present a workflow to generate 3D information compliant with specifications, starting from existing 2D/3D raw data. Also, a 3D validation tool has been developed to be able to evaluate 3D information against the defined specifications. Currently these specifications have been offered to OGC as best practices. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents research that implements a fully automated workflow to generalize a 1:50k map from 1:10k data. This is the first time that a complete topographic map has been generalized without any human interaction. More noteworthy is that the resulting map is good enough to replace the existing map. Specifications for the automated process were established as part of this research. Replication of the existing map was not the aim, because feasibility of automated generalization is better when compliance with traditional generalizations rules is loosened and alternate approaches are acceptable. Indeed, users valued the currency and relevancy of geographical information more than complying with all existing cartographic guidelines. The development of the workflow thus started with the creation of a test map with automated generalization operations. The reason for the test map was to show what is technologically possible and to refine the results based on iterative users’ evaluation. The generalization operations (200 in total) containing the relevant algorithms and parameter values were developed and implemented in one model. Particular effort was made to enrich the source data in order to improve the results. The model is context aware which means it is able to apply different algorithms or adjust parameter values in accordance with a specific area. The result of the research is a fully automated generalization workflow that produces a countrywide map at scale 1:50k from 1:10k data in 50 hours. A fully automated workflow may be the only way to produce flexible and on-demand products; consequently, the results were implemented as a new production line in 2013. Issues for further research have been identified. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Incorporation of a priori defined plant associations into remote sensing products is a major challenge that has only recently been confronted by the remote sensing community. We present an approach to map the spatial distribution of such associations by using plant indicator values (IVs) for salinity, moisture and nutrients as an intermediate between spectral reflectance and association occurrences. For a 12 km2 study site in the Netherlands, the relations between observed IVs at local vegetation plots and visible and near-infrared (VNIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) airborne reflectance data were modelled using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) (R2 0.73, 0.64 and 0.76 for salinity, moisture and nutrients, respectively). These relations were applied to map IVs for the complete study site. Association occurrence probabilities were modelled as function of IVs using a large database of vegetation plots with known association and IVs. Using the mapped IVs, we calculated occurrence probabilities of 19 associations for each pixel, resulting in both a crisp association map with the most likely occurring association per pixel, as well as occurrence probability maps per association. Association occurrence predictions were assessed by a local vegetation expert, which revealed that the occurrences of associations situated at frequently predicted indicator value combinations were over predicted. This seems primarily due to biases in the GPR predicted IVs, resulting in associations with envelopes located in extreme ends of IVs being scarcely predicted. Although the results of this particular study were not fully satisfactory, the method potentially offers several advantages compared to current vegetation classification techniques, like site-independent calibration of association probabilities, site-independent selection of associations and the provision of IV maps and occurrence probabilities per association. If the prediction of IVs can be improved, this method may thus provide a viable roadmap to bring a priori defined plant associations into the domain of remote sensing. [Termes IGN] UMLRésumé : (Auteur) Recently a national 3D standard was established in the Netherlands as a CityGML Application Domain Extension (called IMGeo). In line with the Dutch practice of modeling geo-information, the ADE is developed using a model driven approach. The classes are designed in UML and automatically mapped to GML schema. The current OGC CityGML specification does not provide rules or guidance on correctly modeling an ADE in UML. This article fills this gap by studying how CityGML can be extended for specific applications starting from the UML diagrams. Six alternatives for modeling ADEs in UML are introduced and compared. The optimal alternative is selected and applied to obtain the national 3D standard. The approach was extensively discussed with international experts, who were members of both SIG3D and other working groups. As a consequence the approach was adopted by the SIG3D, the Special Interest Group 3D which, among other things, work on the 3D standard CityGML in cooperation with OGC. Therefore the approach contains many issues that can be generalized and reused by future domain extensions of CityGML. To further support this, the article formulates a model-driven framework to model CityGML ADEs. Open issues are described in the conclusions. In this paper, a sky status indicator (SSI) is proposed as a real-time recognition criterion for the detection, in particular, of the presence of rain events along the propagation path. The computation of the SSI is based on ground-based brightness temperature measurements, at 23.8 and 31.4 GHz, collected in Cabauw, Netherlands, in 2009 by the ESA Atmospheric Propagation and Profiling System (ATPROP) multichannel radiometer. A validation analysis is carried out between simulated data, which are computed by applying the radiative transfer equation to a database of radiosonde profiles collected in De Bilt, Netherlands, by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, and two data sets of radiometric observations at two elevation angles (è equal to 90° and è equal to 69.6°). The analysis based on SSI probability distribution functions has allowed for calculation of the boundary threshold values that are able to discriminate the status of the sky. Furthermore, performances of the SSI were validated against rainfall measurements collected at the ground by a rain gauge located near the ESA ATPROP multichannel radiometer.
