[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article considers two types of tools used for the analysis of spatial data: computational tools for grid data and visualizationbased interactive exploratory techniques. The main purpose is to demonstrate that computational and visual techniques are complementary, and their combined use in data analysis may produce a synergistic effect. To this end, we describe two example scenarios of data analysis in the evaluation of potential damage from earthquakes and in analysis of forest resources. The analyses were performed with the use of CommonGIS, featuring the availability of powerful geocomputational tools and interactive visualizationrelated facilities that can be efficiently used in combination in a desktop environment or via the World Wide Web. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Recent advances in airborne light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology allow rapid and inexpensive measurements of topography over large areas. This technology is becoming a primary method for generating highresolution digital terrain models (DTMs) that are essential to numerous applications such as flood modeling and landslide prediction. Airborne LIDAR systems usually return a threedimensional cloud of point measurements from reflective objects scanned by the laser beneath the flight path. In order to generate a DTM, measurements from nonground features such as buildings, vehicles, and vegetation have to be classified and removed. In this paper, a progressive morphological filter was developed to detect nonground LIDAR measurements. By gradually increasing the window size of the filter and using elevation difference thresholds, the measurements of vehicles, vegetation, and buildings are removed, while ground data are preserved. Datasets from mountainous and flat urbanized areas were selected to test the progressive morphological filter. The results show that the filter can remove most of the nonground points effectively. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) A new multiparameter and multiscale (MPMS) feature set derived from fractional Brownian motion (fBm) is presented in this paper. Generally, natural textures can be modeled as fBm processes. Because fBm is characterized by a single Hurst parameter, it is not flexible enough to be used as the texture feature in classification. Therefore, an extended model is proposed, where the Hurst parameter H is no longer constant for all the scales. The shape and location of the estimation curve, when presented graphically, are fixed for a particular texture. We use the slopes of sections of the estimation curve to estimate the multiscale Hurst parameters. Meanwhile, the unit displacement incremental power (UDIP) a' is also taken as the parameter of the process. It determines the vertical placement of the curve in the graph. Experiments prove that the MPMS feature set has advantages over some other features in the classification of SPOT images. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The identification and classification of mountain pine beetle, Dentroctonus ponderos (Hopkins), red-attack damage patterns in a mature lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forest located in the Forst St-James forest Distric, British Columbia, was accomplished using 1999 Landsat TM satellite imagery, 1999 mountain pine beetle field and aerial survey point data, and GIS forest inventory data. Unrelated variance in the observed spectral response at mountain pine beetle field and aerial survey points was reduced following image stratification with the GIS forest inventory data and removal of other factors uncharacteristic of red-attack damage. Locations of known mountain pine beetle infestation were used to train a maximum-likelihood algorithm ; overall classification accuracy was 73 percent, based on an assessment of 360 independent validation points. If local stand variability is reduced prior to signature generation, accuracies and mao products can be useful for those involved in active forest management decision making regarding mountain pine beetle infestations. [Termes IGN] teinteRésumé : (Auteur) A new pseudocolor mapping strategy for use with spectral imagery is presented. This strategy is based on a principal components analysis of spectral data, and it capitalizes on the similarities between three-color human vision and high-dimensional hyperspectral datasets. The mapping is closely related to three-dimensional versions of scatter plots that are commonly used in remote sensing to visualize the data cloud. The transformation results in final images where the color assigned to each pixel is solely determined by the position within the data cloud. Materials with similar spectral characteristics are presented in similar hues, and basic classification and clustering decisions can be made by the observer. Final images tend to have large regions of desaturated pixels that make the image more readily interpretable. The data cloud is shown here to be conical in nature, and materials with common spectral signatures radiate from the origin of the cone, which is not (in general) at the origin of the spectral data. A supervised method for locating the origin of the cone based on identification of clusters in the data is presented, and the effects of proper origin orientation are illustrated.
