[Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Dense time series of optical satellite imagery describing vegetation activity provide essential information for the efficient and regular monitoring of vegetation. Nevertheless, the temporal resolution of optical sensors is strongly affected by cloud cover, resulting in significant missing information. The use of complementary acquisitions, such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, opens the door to the development of new multi-sensor methodologies aiming at the reconstruction of missing information. However, the joint exploitation of new radar and optical missions, such as the Sentinel, raises new challenges given the different nature and response of the two data sources. In this work, the SenRVM methodology is proposed as a new multi-sensor approach to regress SAR time series towards Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). A deep Recurrent Neural Network architecture which integrates SAR acquisitions and ancillary data is adopted. The regression task permits a continuous optical temporal resolution of 6 days. Multiple experiments are carried out to assess the SenRVM framework by studying two large-scale areas in France. Through an extensive interpretation of the results, SenRVM is evaluated on three main vegetation types (grasslands, crops, and forests). [Termes IGN] segmentation sémantiqueRésumé : (auteur) Buildings can be introduced as a fundamental element for forming a city. Therefore, up-to-date building maps have become vital for many applications, including urban mapping and urban expansion analysis. With the development of deep learning, segmenting building footprints from high-resolution remote sensing imagery has become a subject of intense study. Here, a modified version of the U-Net architecture with a combination of pre- and post-processing techniques was developed to extract building footprints from high-resolution aerial imagery and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery. Data pre-processing with the logarithmic correction image enhancing algorithm showed the most significant improvement in the building detection accuracy for aerial images; meanwhile, the CLAHE algorithm improved the most concerning UAV images. This study developed a post-processing technique using polygonizing and polygon smoothing called the Douglas–Peucker algorithm, which made the building output directly ready to use for different applications. The attribute information, land use data, and population count data were applied using two open datasets. In addition, the building area and perimeter of each building were calculated as geometric attributes. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Urban trees are valuable in, inter alia, ameliorating air pollution and mitigating the effects associated with urban heat islands. The dearth of tree cover maps is a major challenge for urban planners in the management of urban trees. This work adopts remote sensing approaches to provide urban tree cover maps which can strengthen urban landscape management. Whereas traditional pixel-based classification approaches have been commonly used in image classification, they are not well-suited for urban tree mapping due to their failure to fully explore the image’s spatial and spectral characteristics. Object-based classification techniques produce improved accuracies using additional variables. This study depicts the capability of object-based image analysis (OBIA) in mapping common urban trees using very high-resolution (VHR) WorldView-2 (WV-2) imagery. The study tests the utility of WV-2 bands and other feature variables in the object-based mapping of common urban trees and other land cover classes. Furthermore, the study compares the utility of Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) in the object-based mapping of common urban trees and other land cover classes. The results show that the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), NIR 1 and NIR 2 bands were important in the classification of common urban trees and other land cover classes. The RF classifier performed better than SVM, with an overall accuracy of 91.9% as compared to 87.3% for SVM. The results of this study offer insight to urban authorities with knowledge on the segmentation parameters, classification methods and feature variables for mapping urban trees, valuable in urban tree management. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Current remote sensing methods can provide detailed tree species classification in boreal forests. However, classification studies have so far focused on the dominant tree species, with few studies on less frequent but ecologically important species. We aimed to separate European aspen (Populus tremula L.), a biodiversity-supporting tree species, from the more common species in European boreal forests (Pinus sylvestris L., Picea abies [L.] Karst., Betula spp.). Using multispectral drone images collected on five dates throughout one thermal growing season (May–September), we tested the optimal season for the acquisition of mono-temporal data. These images were collected from a mature, unmanaged forest. After conversion into photogrammetric point clouds, we segmented crowns manually and automatically and classified the species by linear discriminant analysis. The highest overall classification accuracy (95%) for the four species as well as the highest classification accuracy for aspen specifically (user’s accuracy of 97% and a producer’s accuracy of 96%) were obtained at the beginning of the thermal growing season (13 May) by manual segmentation. On 13 May, aspen had no leaves yet, unlike birches. In contrast, the lowest classification accuracy was achieved on 27 September during the autumn senescence period. This is potentially caused by high intraspecific variation in aspen autumn coloration but may also be related to our date of acquisition. Our findings indicate that multispectral drone images collected in spring can be used to locate and classify less frequent tree species highly accurately. The temporal variation in leaf and canopy appearance can alter the detection accuracy considerably. [Termes IGN] signalisation routièreRésumé : (Auteur) Due to the large volume and high redundancy of point clouds, there are many dilemmas in road-marking extraction algorithms, especially from uneven lidar point clouds. To extract road markings efficiently, this study presents a novel method for handling the uneven density distribution of point clouds and the high reflection intensity of road markings. The method first segments the point-cloud data into blocks perpendicular to the vehicle trajectory. Then it applies the double adaptive intensity-threshold method to extract road markings from road surfaces. Finally, it performs an adaptive spatial density filter based on the density distribution of point-cloud data to remove false road-marking points. The average completeness, correctness, and F measure of road-marking extraction are 0.827, 0.887, and 0.854, respectively, indicating that the proposed method is efficient and robust.
