[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The urban environment is characterized by an intense multifunctional use of available spaces, where the preservation of open green spaces is of special importance. For this purpose, areawide urban biotope mapping based on CIR aerial photographs has been carried out for the large cities in Germany during the last 10 years. Because of dynamic urban development and high mapping costs, the municipal authorities are interested in effective methods for mapping urban surface cover types, which can be used for evaluation of ecological conditions in urban structures and supporting updates of biotope maps. Against this background, airborne hyperspectral remote sensing data of the DAIS 7915 instrument have been analyzed for a test site in the city of Dresden (Germany) with regard to their potential for automated materialoriented identification of urban surface cover types. Previous investigations have shown that the high spectral and spatial variabilities of these data require the development of special methods, which are capable of dealing with the resulting mixedpixel problem in its specific characteristics in urban areas. Earlier, methodological developments led to an approach based on a combination of spectral classification and pixeloriented unmixing techniques to facilitate sensible endmember selection based on the reflective bands of the DAIS instrument. This approach is now extended by a shapebased classification technique including the thermal bands of the DAIS instrument to improve the detection of buildings during the process of identifying seedling pixels, which represent the starting points for linear spectral unmixing. This new approach increases the reliability of differentiation between buildings and open spaces, leading to more accurate results for the spatial distribution of surface cover types. Thus, the new approach significantly enhances the exploitation of the information potential of the hyperspectral DAIS 7915 data for an areawide identification of urban surface cover types. [Termes IGN] trajet multipleRésumé : (Auteur) Answer: The winner of the 1971 Nobel Prize for Physics. The question? Who defined the most important signal parameter for controlling GPS multipath? The British/Hungarian physicist Dennis Gabor won the prize for the invention of holography. However, Gabor was also one of a handful of mathematicians and scientists who developed communication theory during the 1940s. Communication theory, also called information theory, is the branch of mathematics that deals with the efficient and accurate transmission of information-bearing signals from one place to another. Key to the theory is the concept of signal bandwidth. Now bandwidth can be defined in a number of different ways, but the particular bandwidth named after Cabor determines, in part, how accurately a GPS receiver can measure pseudorange or carrier phase in the presence of multipath. The Gabor bandwidth is determined by the particular shape of the signal's power spectral density function, and the larger the bandwidth the more resistant is the signal to multipath. The GPS receiver must have a processor that takes advantage of this resistance to provide measurements with minimal multipath contamination. Here, Dr Lawrence Weill outlines an implementation of a multipath mitigation algorithm based on the statistical theory of maximum likelihood and describes its expected performance with the new GPS signals soon to be available - signals characterized by a higher Cabor bandwidth than those currently transmitted. The Evaluation and Validation of EO-1 for substainable Development (EVEOSD) is our project supporting the EO-1 mission. With 10% of the world's forests and the second country by area in the world, Canada has a natural requirement for effective monitoring of its forests. Eight test sites have been selected for EVEOSD, with seven in Canada and one United States. Extensive fieldwork has been conducted at four of these sites. A comparison is made of forest classification from Hyperion, ALI, and the Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) of Landsat-7 for the Greater Victoria Watershed. The data have been radiometrically corrected and orthorectified. Feature selection and statistical transforms are used to reduce the Hyperion feature space from 198 channels to 11 features. Classes chosen for discrimination included Douglasfir, hemlock, western, redcedar, lodgepole pine, and red alder. Overall classification accuracies obtained for each sensor were Hyperion 90.0 %, ALI 84.8% and ETM+ 75.0%. Hyperspectral remote sensing provides significant advantages and greater accuracies over ETM+ for forest discrimination. The EO-1 sensors, Hyperion and ALI, provide data with excellent discrimination for Pacific Northwest in comparison to Landsat-7 ETM+. [Termes IGN] température de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Multiple satellite sensors are used to analyze physical processes that determine energy fluxes and their interaction at the urban surface. The study is based on summertime microclimate analyses of the Los Angeles and Paris metropolises. The method consists of deriving some parameters governing the surface heat fluxes, constructing statistics of thermal infrared images, and using a GIS to combine them with a landcover classification from SPOTHRV multispectral images, and with data from intensive insitu experiments. The average images reveal spatial and temporal variations of land surface temperature (LST), and distinct microclimatic patterns. The combined interpretation of the statistics images and of the landcover classification shows: (i) the effect of surface physical properties, especially in downtown business and industrial districts that display heatislands larger than 7°C; (ii) the temperating influence of water; (iii) the negative correlation between afternoon land surface temperature and normalized vegetation index, which confirms the cooling effect of urban parks; (iv) the correlation between variations of surface temperature and ozone concentration at diurnal and longer time scales. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we evaluate the potential of a frequency-based contextual classifier (FBC) for landuse classification with a panchromatic Ikonos image. To capture the spatial arrangement of image graylevel values and use such information in image classification, we applied texture spectrum (TS) directly in the FBC. The effects of several data preprocessing and reduction methods on the performance of the FBC are also evaluated. The methods include four graylevel reduction (GLR) techniques and several modifications to the TS technique. The purpose of data reduction is to improve the classification efficiency of the FBC. The GLR schemes were minmax linear compression (LC), gray level binning (BN), histogram equalization (HE), and piecewise nonlinear compression (PC). Instead of using the texture measures derived from the texture spectrum, we directly applied texture spectra of various sizes in the classification. We modified the encoding algorithm in the TS and were able to reduce the number of texture units from its original 6561 to 256, 81, and 16, leading to as much as a 410 times computation efficiency. The original image and GLR images were subsequently classified with the FBC. We compared the classification accuracies and found that the GLR methods resulted in accuracies similar to that of the original image (within 0.03 kappa value). There was little difference in classification accuracy (within 0.03 kappa value) among the three modified TS methods, which were all outperformed by the original TS method. All TS methods performed considerably better than the use of the original image and the GLR methods.
