[Termes IGN] temps de propagationRésumé : (Auteur) Time of flight range cameras simultaneously gather object distances for all pixels of a focal plane array by evaluating the round-trip time of an emitted signal. While ranging precisions typically amount to some centimeters, accuracies may be worse by an order of magnitude. Scattering is one of the sources of systematic errors, caused by the spreading of portions of the incident light over the sensor due to multiple reflections between the sensor, lens and optical filter. The present contribution analyses this phenomenon with respect to various capture parameters, with the objective of achieving a better understanding and a validation of assumptions. Subsequently, the authors derive both image space invariant and variant models for scattering, apply them to test scenes, and compare the results to each other and to those of existing methods. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Speckle hinders information in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images and makes automatic information extraction very difficult. The Bayesian approach allows us to perform the despeckling of an image while preserving its texture and structures. This model-based approach relies on a prior model of the scene. This paper presents an evaluation of two despeckling and texture extraction model-based methods using the two levels of Bayesian inference. The first method uses a Gauss-Markov random field as prior, and the second is based on an auto-binomial model (ABM). Both methods calculate a maximum a posteriori and determine the best model using an evidence maximization algorithm. Our evaluation approach assesses the quality of the image by means of the despeckling and texture extraction qualities. The proposed objective measures are used to quantify the despeckling performances of these methods. The accuracy of modeling and characterization of texture were determined using both supervised and unsupervised classifications, and confusion matrices. Real and simulated SAR data were used during the validation procedure. The results show that both methods enhance the image during the despeckling process. The ABM is superior regarding texture extraction and despeckling for real SAR images. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) The Level 2 soil moisture products from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission have been re- leased. The data must be validated under different scenarios of biophysical and climatic conditions. For the current study, the data from January to December 2010 from 20 in situ soil moisture stations from the REMEDHUS soil moisture measurement station network (Spain) were used. A comparison analysis was carried out in terms of the soil moisture content, its spatial variability, and temporal stability. The results show an acceptable level of agreement (R = 0.73, RMSD = 0.069 m3 · m-3, and bias = 0.053 m3 · m-3) between the in situ and satellite data. A slight constant underestimation from the SMOS data set was detected. A centered (bias removed) root-mean-square difference was calculated to account for this persistent bias (RMSDc = 0.044 m3 · m-3). This result is close to the SMOS accuracy objective of 0.04 m3 · m-3. Two conclusions can be drawn: First, SMOS is close to meet the mission accuracy requirements in REMEDHUS, and second, SMOS is able to detect temporal anomalies and the temporal evolution of ground soil moisture, even though the soil moisture was slightly underestimated. Despite a noticeably reduced spatial variability among the SMOS grid cells, the remotely sensed soil moisture shows a spatial pattern of the soil moisture fields on the area scale, in agreement with the site-specific characteristics of REMEDHUS. No differences were found between the use of ascending and descending orbits. In addition, no differences were detected between the use of time-overpass values of in situ soil moisture and that of the daily average. The same applies to algorithms that produce gridded datasets from sparse or abundant raw data. Further use of the resulting data products has been challenging, especially for dissemination outside the institute of origin. Due to the gradually increasing size of data products, simply downloading copies of them is becoming impossible. A gradual transition from traditional download methods to web services is therefore observed. Web services allow for on-the-fly access to subsets of data that were hitherto considered as indivisible granules. Here we compare the most mature candidates to serve gridded data through the web: the Open-source Project for a Network Data Access Protocol (OPeNDAP) and Web Coverage Service (WCS) protocols. In the framework of the new Dutch National Model and Data Centre (NMDC.eu) a distributed data storage has been created by coupling OPeNDAP servers. A WCS service layer is provided for the same data. This allows us to compare OPeNDAP and WCS. Using several use cases, we compare the usability, performance and features of the two protocols.
