[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) A rock fall occurs when a fragment of rock is detached from a cliff and travels down-slope at high speed. Rock falls are a constant hazard in mountainous regions and pose a significant threat to the population. In this paper, a comparison of software designed to model rock falls is presented. The computer codes selected for the experiment are STONE and RocFall®. STONE is a research code for the 3-dimensional simulation of rock falls. RocFall® is commercial software widely used for the 2-dimensional simulation of rock falls along user defined topographic profiles. The two computer programs require similar input and provide comparable outputs, allowing for a quantitative evaluation of their modelling results. To compare the software, the Monte Salta rock fall, in northern Italy, was selected. Specific tests were designed to compare the ability of the software to predict the maximum travel distance of the falling boulders, and the distance from the ground of the computed rock fall trajectories. Results indicate that the two rock fall modelling codes provide similar—but not identical—results. In general, STONE computes higher and longer rock fall trajectories than RocFall®, and allows identifying a larger area as potentially affected by falling boulders. [Termes IGN] système expertRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, two simple GIS-based methodologies have been used to assess the landslide susceptibility in a basin located in Southern Italy. The methodologies at issue, based on the spatial distribution of landslides and/or of causal factors, are bivariate statistics-based and expert-based, respectively. The spatial distribution of both the landslides and the causal factors has been investigated by integrating pre-existing and original data, which have been processed using ArcView GIS 3.2 software. The obtained results, consisting of landslide susceptibility maps have been compared and discussed. The bivariate statistics-based method has provided the most satisfying results. On the contrary, the expert-based method has provided a classification of the study area in terms of landslide susceptibility which does not completely fit with the surveyed spatial distribution of the landslides. Three methods for computing coastline recession - the baseline approach, the dynamic segmentation approach and the area-based approach - have been used, each of which has one or more drawbacks. To overcome these problems, a new methodology for measuring coastline recession is proposed, using buffering and non-linear least squares estimation. The proposed method was compared with the three existing methods with respect to two simulated cases and two real coastlines. Test results confirmed that the new method is more reliable than the three other methods, all of which are susceptible to variability of recession, scale, number of line segments, length of coastlines and direction of the baseline. The proposed method, incorporating two physically meaningful values - magnitude and variability of coastline recession according to the mean and standard deviation of coastline offsets, respectively - presents itself as an effective alternative method of assessing coastline recession. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) This paper is focused on the analysis of the performance of Stable Point Network (SPN) and Coherent Pixel Technique (CPT), which are Advanced Differential Interferometry Techniques (A-DInSAR) that estimate, among other results, mean deformation velocity maps of the ground surface and displacement time series from a SAR dataset. The test site is the metropolitan area of the city of Murcia (Spain) where a moderate slow subsidence induced by the overexploitation of aquifers is present. SAR data acquired between July 1995 and August 2005 from ERS and ENVISAT sensors have been processed by the SPN and CPT techniques and compared with in situ instrumental measurements assumed as reference. Experimental results have shown that both SPN and CPT techniques provide estimates of the deformation evolution in time with an absolute difference below 6 mm consistently in all comparisons: SPN vs extensometer, CPT vs extensometer and SPN vs CPT. The proposed validation and comparison experiment between both A-DInSAR techniques has been useful to observe their differences and complementarities. This article addresses the issue of modelling mudslide-susceptible locations using an information value approach. Landsat 7 (ETM+) was employed to create a land-use map with limited field checks. Other parameters considered were lineament, road, soil, stream network and lithology. Topographic parameters such as slope and aspect play a dominant role in slope stability studies. Maps for slope and aspects were developed from a digital elevation model using statistical surface interpolation techniques. This article offers insight into the importance of the selection of suitable surface interpolation techniques. The three surface interpolation techniques evaluated in the study were: inverse distance weighted, Kriging and Spline. These were found to have varied accuracies of interpolation surfaces for all parameters, including elevation, slope and aspect. Surfaces offering the best accuracy were adopted for the information value approach for mudslide susceptibility zonation.
