[Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) The Multi-frequency Scanning Microwave Radiometer (MSMR) aboard the Indian Space Research Organization—Oceansat-1 platform measured land surface brightness temperature at a C-band frequency and provided an opportunity for exploring large-scale soil moisture retrieval during its two-year period of operation. These data may provide a valuable extension to the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) and the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) since they covered a portion of the time period between the two missions. This investigation was one of the first to utilize the MSMR data for a land application and, as a result, several data quality issues had to be addressed. These included geolocation accuracy, calibration (particularly over land), erroneous data, and the significance of anthropogenic radio-frequency interference (RFI). Calibration of the low frequency channels was evaluated using inter-comparisons between the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission/Microwave Imager (TRMM/TMI) and the MSMR brightness temperatures. Biases (TMI TB>MSMR TB) of 3.4 and 3.6 K were observed over land for the MSMR 10.65 GHz horizontal and vertical polarization channels, respectively. These results suggested that additional calibration of the MSMR data was required. Comparisons between the MSMR measured brightness temperature and ground measured volumetric soil moisture collected during the South Great Plain experiment (SGP99) indicated that the lower frequency and horizontal polarization observations had higher sensitivity to soil moisture. Using a previously developed soil emission model, multi-temporal regional soil moisture distributions were retrieved for the continental United States. Comparisons between the MSMR based soil moisture and ground measured volumetric soil moisture indicated a standard error of estimate of 0.052 m3/m3. [Termes IGN] Viet NamRésumé : (Auteur) Shifting cultivation in the Nghe An Province of Vietnam's Northern Mountain Region produces a characteristic land-cover pattern of small and larger fields. The pattern is the result of farmers cultivating either individually or in spatially clustered groups. Using spatially explicit agent-based modelling, and relying on empirical data from fieldwork and observations for parameterization of variables, the level of clustering in agricultural fields observed around a study village is reproduced. Agents in the model act to maximize labour productivity, which is based on potential yield and labour costs associated with fencing of fields, and are faced with physical constraints. The simulation results are compared with land-cover data obtained from remote sensing. Comparisons are made on patterns as detected visually and using the mean nearest-neighbour ratio. Baseline simulation outputs show high degrees of spatial clustering and similarity to the land-cover data, but also a need for further calibration of model variables and controls. The US Bureau of Reclamation adopted it to study how flow change in the Yakima Rivera affected fish habitat. [Termes IGN] PoseidonRésumé : (Auteur) The sea surface topography, which is directly linked to the shape of the geoid and to oceanic effects, is only measurable thanks to the spatial and temporal resolution of satellite altimetry. The contributions of satellite altimetry study in the Mediterranean have been considerable. The first maps of the marine geoid, with relative accuracy of one to two decimetres depending on the methods used, have contributed greatly to the understanding of geophysical phenomena. Subsequently, thanks to reductions in orbital errors, improvements in gravitational models, and to the development of pseudo-geometrical orbit computations, the accuracy of determination of the absolute mean sea level has improved from several meters to a few centimetres. The study presented here aims to determine seasonal variations in mean sea level in the Western Mediterranean basin by analysis of Jason-1 data corrected of different perturbations like the geophysical phenomena, the ocean wave influence, the inverse barometer effect, and the orbit error. The analysis of altimetric data Jason-1 allowed us to observe a strong amplitude of variations of the average level in the Western Mediterranean basin, of the order of 20 cm, with a characteristic period of one year. The comparison of the variation of the average height sea level at the harbour of Algiers obtained from analysis of altimetric data Jason-1 and from the harmonic analysis of tidal gauge measurements, showed almost identical results. [Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) Urban environmental conditions are strongly dependent on the biophysical properties and radiant thermal field of the land cover elements in the urban mosaic. Observations of urban reflectance and surface temperature provide valuable constraints on the physical properties that are determinants of mass and energy fluxes in the urban environment. Consistencies in the covariation of surface temperature with reflectance properties can be parameterized to represent characteristics of the surface energy flux associated with different land covers and physical conditions. Linear mixture models can accurately represent Landsat ETM+ reflectances as fractions of generic spectral endmembers that correspond to land surface materials with distinct physical properties. Modeling heterogeneous land cover as mixtures of rock and/or soil Substrate, Vegetation and non-reflective Dark surface (SVD) generic endmembers makes it possible to quantify the dependence of aggregate surface temperature on the relative abundance of each physical component of the land cover, thereby distinguishing the effects of vegetation abundance, soil exposure, albedo and shadowing. Comparing these covariations in a wide variety of urban settings and physical environments provides a more robust indication of the global variability in these parameter spaces than could be inferred from a single study area. A comparative analysis of 24 urban areas and their non-urban peripheries illustrates the variability in the urban thermal fields and its dependence on biophysical land surface components. Contrary to expectation, moderate resolution intra-urban variations in surface temperature are generally as large as regional surface heat island signatures in these urban areas. Many of the non-temperate urban areas did not have surface heat island signatures at all. However, the multivariate distributions of surface temperature and generic endmember fractions reveal consistent patterns of thermal fraction covariation resulting from land cover characteristics.
