[Termes IGN] modèle statistiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Spectral smoothing filters are popularly used in a large number of modern hyperspectral remote sensing studies for removing noise from the data. However, most of these studies subjectively apply ad hoc measures to select filter types and their parameters. We argue that this subjectively minded approach is not appropriate for choosing smoothing methods for hyperspectral applications. In our case study, it is proved that smoothing filters can cause undesirable changes to statistical characteristics of the spectral data ; thereby, affecting the results of the analyses that are based on statistical class models. If preserving statistical properties of the original hyperspectral data is desired, smoothing filters should then be used, if necessary, after careful consideration of which smoothing techniques will minimize disturbances to the statistical properties of the original data. A comparative t-test is proposed as a method for choosing a smoothing filter suitable for hyperspectral data at hand. [Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (Auteur) The preservation of spectral characteristics and the retention of high spatial resolution are two key issues in image fusion. Different applications may require different balances between the two. However, the limitation is that only one fused result is possible for most of the commonly used fusion methods; users have no control over how much spatial detail or spectral information should be retained. Both quantitative and qualitative criteria, including mean, standard deviation, entropy, average gradient, spectral distortion, correlation coefficient and visual assessment, were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed fuser. A SPOT (Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre) panchromatic image and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images were employed in the evaluation. The results show that the proposed method is slightly better than, or comparable to, commonly used image fusion methods, including Intensity-Hue-Saturation (IHS), principal component analysis (PCA), and two other wavelet-based fusion methods with replacement and with selection strategies, in terms of spectral characteristic preservation and high spatial resolution retention. Moreover, the proposed method can achieve a wide range of balances between spectral characteristic preservation and high spatial resolution retention, and thus is applicable in different applications. [Termes IGN] zone polaireRésumé : (Auteur) Spaceborne single-polarization C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is widely used to gather information about the state of the sea ice cover in the polar regions. C-band is regarded as a reasonable choice for all-season monitoring capabilities. For specific mapping tasks, however, other frequency hands can be more suitable. In the first part of this paper, the summary of a literature study dealing with the utilization of L-band SAR imagery for sea ice monitoring is presented. Investigations reveal that if deformation features such as ice ridges, rubble fields, and brash ice are to be mapped, L-band radar is superior in a number of cases. The second part of this paper addresses the comparison of JERS-1 and ERS-1 SAR images that were acquired over sea ice east of Svalbard and along the east coast of Greenland. The effects of the different frequencies, polarizations, and incidence angles of the two SAR Systems are discussed. It is demonstrated that the images of both sensors complement one another in the analysis of ice conditions, resulting in a more detailed view of the sea ice cover state. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) It is likely to be 2012 before the Galileo system itself is fully operational on a stand-alone basis, says this month's interviewee Owen Goodman, and Galileo will never be a commercially viable service as long as GPS and Glonass are free. Given current plans, Galileo is heading inevitably towards a funding crisis. National security and defence agencies could make a substantial financial contribution, but this at the expense of Galileo's status as a civilian system. The EU should leave the fulfilment of specialist civilian needs to commercial GNSS augmentation service providers and the makers of 'RTK-type' GNSS equipment, so that only the user and not the general taxpayer pays for improved performance.
