[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The automation of generalisation is an important issue at National Mapping Agencies (NMAs) to reduce data production costs and to improve data maintenance. This paper presents the challenges for automated generalisation at European NMAs integrating a qualitative and quantitative analysis. The qualitative analysis focuses on the current strategies for automated generalisation at NMAs. The quantitative analysis extends these findings and measures the status of automated generalisation functionality at NMAs using the required and missing generalisation operators as indicators. The results are interesting for the research community, the software vendors and NMAs to streamline their efforts to accomplish full automation of generalisation processes. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Cartogram is a technique for visualisation of the geographical distribution of spatial data. It has two main types, i.e. distance cartogram and area cartogram. Area cartogram is a transformed map in which areas are resized in proportion to an attribute value. A number of techniques have been developed for the generation of area cartograms. Some researchers consider cartogram as a very effective technique for visualisation of spatial data, while others doubt about the effectiveness because of the possible distortion in shape and/or disconnectivity in topology. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of area cartogram for visualizing spatial data. In this study, two comparative experiments have been conducted. One is the comparison between thematic maps and cartograms, and the other is the comparison among different types of area cartogram. Two sets of data with different characteristics are used, i.e. 2005 China population data and 1996 US election data. Results show that cartogram is more effective in the representation of the 1996 US election data which provides a qualitative result (i.e. in binary form or nominal data), but thematic map is far more effective in the representation of 2005 China population data which provides a quantitative result (in classes or ordinal data). It is also found that among different types of area cartogram, pseudo-cartogram is the most preferred technique and Darling cartogram is the least preferred one. [Termes IGN] objet géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) When integrating geo-spatial data sets, a join algorithm is used for finding sets of corresponding objects (i.e., objects that represent the same real-world entity). This article investigates location-based join algorithms for integration of several data sets. First, algorithms for integration of two data sets are presented and their performances, in terms of recall and precision, are compared. Then, two approaches for integration of more than two data sets are described. In one approach, all the integrated data sets are processed simultaneously. In the second approach, a join algorithm for two data sets is applied sequentially, either in a serial manner, where in each join at least one of the joined data sets is a single source, or in a hierarchical manner, where two join results can be joined. For the two approaches, join algorithms are given. The algorithms are designed to perform well even when location of objects are imprecise and each data set represents only some of the real-world entities. Results of extensive experiments with the different approaches are provided and analyzed. The experiments show the differences, in accuracy and efficiency, between the approaches, under different circumstances. The results also show that all our algorithms have much better accuracy than applying the commonly used one-sided nearest-neighbor join. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Network models, based on mathematical graph theory, are used in many fields, from chemistry and biology to ecology and sociology. A nominal-valued land-cover raster can be represented as a network in which patches are nodes connected by links if two patches are adjacent. Built with existing GIS technology, the system is applied to the largest patches of a raster for the Washington, D.C. area in order to provide a data structure that visualizes the gross spatial structure of the raster; provides information about the overall arrangement of the patches and their adjacencies; and generates new metrics about land-cover patterns, connectivity and spatial autocorrelation. The system facilitates the evaluation of land-cover classifications, the measurement of landscape change, comparisons of data from different regions, and the analysis of land/environmental interactions.
