[Termes IGN] Socet SetRésumé : (Auteur) Automated processes in commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) systems are increasingly prevalent as new technology, and new knowledge is fused to enhance accessibility to spatial information. Automated terrain extraction is becoming a standard capability implemented into photogrammetric software. This paper focuses on digital surface model (DSM) generation from high-resolution satellite imagery (HRSI) using three COTS systems, SOCET SET®, Z/I Imaging, and Imagine® OrthoBASE, which each have their own image matching strategy. By generating DSMs of a test field diverse in land-cover, we assess the performance of the COTS terrain extraction methodologies. In checkpoints favorable to image matching, accuracy to a few meters in height can be achieved from COTS generated DSMs, however the isolated points are unlikely to be representative of the entire scene. Therefore, we look to alternative sources of control, such as the newly available DLR- and NASA-generated SRTM DEMs. A comparison to X-band SRTM DEMs demonstrated that height RMSE values range from 4 to 9 metres, though most of this uncertainty is attributed to the SRTM data. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a wavelet transformation-based method for fusing high-resolution satellite images. First, a multi-band wavelet fusion method, specifically the four-band wavelet method, is proposed for fusing one-meter panchromatic and four-meter multi-spectral Ikonos images. Second, the fusion experiments are undertaken by using the proposed four-band wavelet method. The results are compared with fused images from other methods, such as two-band wavelet and IHS methods. The results are evaluated based on both visual evaluation and a quantitative analysis, by using several assessing parameters and a new evaluation method: the profile intensity curve. Third, as an application of the fused images, they are applied for recognition and identification of features in urban area. The quantitative analysis demonstrates that four-band wavelet transformation method provides improved fused images. [Termes IGN] précision des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Application of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry to the retrieval of geophysical parameters from yegetated scenes is based on simple direct models of such scenes. The first part of this paper presents an analysis of the correspon-dence between these simple models, namely, the random volume over ground and the oriented volume over ground (OVoG), and experimental data from samples of two agricultural crops (maize and rice) acquired in controlled conditions. Although an overall agreement between model and data is clear, some discrepancies have been found as a consequence of two assumptions in the model formulation: vertical homogeneity of the vegetation volume and absence of multiple scattering effects inside the volume. This paper presents the shape and location of the visible region of the experimental coherences on the complex plane and compares it with the feasible region predicted by the model. This comparison has also pointed out the low sensitivity of the direct model to extinction coefficients. In the second part, two different strategies for a complete inversion (i.e., estimation of all model parameters) of the OVoG model are proposed and compared, using the same data set. The first one is based on a combination of geometrical and numerical approaches (genetic algorithms) and the second one on a dual-baseline configuration. In all cases, ground topography is accurately estimated, with a maximum error of 10 cm. Vegetation height estimates are accurate up to 30 cm, with some bands and baseline configurations providing errors below 15 cm. However, results obtained for the extinction coefficients are not stable with frequency and exhibit high variability. [Termes IGN] polarisationRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a quantitative comparison of L- and C-band airborne synthetic aperture radar imagery acquired at like- and cross-polarizations over deformed sea ice under winter conditions. The parameters characterizing the deformation state of the ice are determined at both radar bands and at different polarizations. The separation of deformed and level ice is based on a target detection technique. The threshold is set such that image pixels with intensities equal to or larger than the highest 2% of the level-ice intensity distribution are classified as deformed ice, independent of the radar configuration and ice conditions. Optical imagery of sufficient quality for comparison is available only in a very few cases. To characterize the deformation state, the areal fraction of deformation features and the average distance between these features are evaluated. The values obtained for both parameters are very sensitive to the radar frequency. Aeral fractions are larger, and average distances are smaller at L-band than at C-band because of the much higher intensity contrast between the deformed and level ice at L-band. The differences between polarizations at one radar band are smaller but not always negligible. In comparison to optical images, it was observed that deformed-ice areas can be distinguished from level ice over their whole length and exten-sion at L-band, whereas at C-band, often, only prominent parts are visible. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) This study aims at assessing the consistency between different precipitable water vapour (PWV) datasets over Africa (between 35°N and 10°S). This region is characterized by large spatial and temporal variability of humidity but also by the scarcity of its operational observing network, limiting our knowledge of the hydrological cycle. We intercompare data from observing techniques such as ground-based Global Positioning System (GPS), radiosondes, AERONET sun photometers and SSM/I, as well as reanalyses from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ERA-40) and National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP2). The GPS data, especially, are a new source of PWV observation in this region. PWV estimates from nine ground-based GPS receivers of the international GPS network data are used as a reference dataset to which the others are compared. Good agreement is found between observational techniques, though dry biases of 12–14% are evidenced in radiosonde data at three sites. Reasonable agreement is found between the observational datasets and ERA-40 (NCEP2) reanalyses with maximum bias ⩽9% (14%) and standard deviation ⩽17% (20%). Since GPS data were not assimilated in the ERA-40 and NCEP2 reanalyses, they allow for a fully independent validation of the reanalyses. They highlight limitations in the reanalyses, especially at time-scales from sub-daily to periods of a few days. This work also demonstrates the high potential of GPS PWV estimates over Africa for the analysis of the hydrological cycle, at time-scales ranging between sub-diurnal to seasonal. Such observations can help studying atmospheric processes targeted by the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis project.
