[Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (INSAR) is capable of measuring ground-surface deformation with centimeter-to-subcentimeter precision and spatial resolution of tens-of-meters over a relatively large region. With its global coverage and all-weather imaging capability, INSAR is an important technique for measuring ground-surface deformation of volcanoes over cloud-prone and rainy regions such as the Aleutian Islands, where only less than 5 percent of optical imagery is usable due to inclement weather conditions. The spatial distribution of surface deformation data, derived from INSAR images, enables the construction of detailed mechanical models to enhance the study of magmatic processes. This paper reviews the basics of INSAR for volcanic deformation mapping and the INSAR studies of ten Aleutian volcanoes associated with both eruptive and non-eruptive activity. These studies demonstrate that all-weather INSAR imaging can improve our understanding of how the Aleutian volcanoes work and enhance our capability to predict future eruptions and associated hazards. [Termes IGN] pollution des mersRésumé : (Auteur) We present algorithms for automatic detection of oil spills in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The algorithms consist of three main parts, namely: 1) detection of dark spots; 2) feature extraction from the dark spot candidates; and 3) classification of dark spots as oil spills or look-alikes. The algorithms have been trained on a large number of Radarsat and Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) images. The performance of the algorithm is compared to manual and semiautomatic approaches in a benchmark study using 59 Radarsat and Envisat images. The algorithms can be considered to be a good alternative to manual inspection when large ocean areas are to be inspected. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate time registration, georeferencing, and instantaneous feature extraction are important challenges for real-time mapping systems. The Geodetic Engineering Laboratory (TOPO) at the EPFL has designed a mobile platform to automatically determine the geometry of the road centerline: the Photobus. Our system fully exploits the concept of direct georeferencing by combining navigation data with video sequences grabbed by a downward-pointing camera. This paper presents the realization of the authors' vision of real-time mapping that encompasses a mobile acquisition platform dedicated for a well-defined task. To sustain the high performance requirements of such a data-critical application, the use of custom-made software based on open-source libraries is a preferred approach of implementation. In this context, we investigate the suitability of using a close-to-nadiral CMOS camera to extract the road geometry with a reliable and almost latency-free methodology. We will first focus on the frame-grabbing process for which an open-source approach guarantees the versatile integration of the camera into the mapping platform. The second part of the paper discusses the process of extracting and georeferencing features of interest in an automatic manner. To open perspectives, we will investigate an extension of the surveying capabilities of the Photobus with stereovision.
