[Termes IGN] validation des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Sampling efforts are constrained by limited availability of resources. Therefore, methods to reduce the number of samples, while still achieving reasonable accuracy are needed. Land-surface segmentation (LSS) has proven a powerful technique to partition digital elevation models (DEMs) and their derivatives into relatively homogeneous areas, which can be further employed as support in soil sampling. Though topography is one of the main soil forming factors, a robust assessment of the potential of this technique to digital soil mapping (DSM) is still missing. In this study, we aimed at evaluating the potential of LSS in stratifying a landscape into relatively homogeneous areas, which can be used as strata for guiding the selection of sampling points in DSM. The experiments were carried out in two study areas where soil samples were available. Land-surface derivatives were derived from DEMs and segmented with a tool based on the multiresolution segmentation algorithm, into objects considered as homogeneous soil-landscape divisions. Thus, one sample was randomly selected within each segment from the existing sample data, based on which predictions of soil classes/sub-orders and properties, i.e. soil texture and A-horizon thickness, were made. Results were compared with predictions based on simple random sampling (SRS) and conditioned Latin hypercube (cLHS). The segmentation-based sampling (SBS) scheme performed better than SRS and cLHS schemes in predicting the A-horizon thickness, soil texture fractions and soil classes, showing a high potential of LSS in stratifying a landscape for the purposes of DSM. The novelty of this study is in the way strata are constructed, rather than in the sampling design itself. Further research is needed to demonstrate the value of a SBS design for practical use. The analyses presented here further highlight the importance of considering locally adaptive techniques in optimization of sampling schemes and predictions of soil properties. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In Europe, water levels in wetlands are widely controlled by environmental managers and farmers. However, the influence of these management practices on hydrodynamics and biodiversity remains poorly understood. This study assesses advantages of using radar data from the recently launched Sentinel-1A satellite to monitor hydrological dynamics of the Poitevin marshland in western France. We analyze a time series of 14 radar images acquired in VV and HV polarizations from December 2014 to May 2015 with a 12-day time step. Both polarizations are used with a hysteresis thresholding algorithm which uses both spatial and temporal information to distinguish open water, flooded vegetation and non-flooded grassland. Classification results are compared to in situ piezometric measurements combined with a Digital Terrain Model derived from LiDAR data. Results reveal that open water is successfully detected, whereas flooded grasslands with emergent vegetation and fine-grained patterns are detected with moderate accuracy. Five hydrological regimes are derived from the flood duration and mapped. Analysis of time steps in the time series shows that decreased temporal repetitivity induces significant differences in estimates of flood duration. These results illustrate the great potential to monitor variations in seasonal floods with the high temporal frequency of Sentinel-1A acquisitions. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (Auteur) Construction of scaled-down landslide models is an important means for landslide study. The objective of this study is to develop an innovative non-contact photogrammetric system to meet the challenge for monitoring the fast surface deformation of a laboratory-simulated landslide, which can detect pre-failure events and the final failure, provide sectional and overall surface deformation patterns, and generate speed maps during the rapid slope failure. We proposed an event detector based on altered surface features in the slower SLRC (single-lensreflex camera) image sequence to detect pre-failure events, while a combined analysis tool used the surface velocity fields and deformation areas based on fast HSCS (high-speed stereocamera system) stereo image sequences to reveal fast-changing landslide behavior during the short final failure. The introduced surface change detector uses the percentage of sliding block areas, percentage of changed features, and average speeds. It successfully detected four pre-failure local collapse events and the final slope failure; the extent of surface changes reached its maximum to accumulate energy 1.5 seconds before the failure when the average speed of changed features achieved its peak of 0.8 m/s. The developed system achieved a position accuracy of 3.8 mm and a speed accuracy of 0.11 m/s. The analysis result demonstrated a time period of 66 minutes before the failure which is confirmed by significant signals from both imaging and contact sensors and is important for landslide early warning. A field implementation scheme in western China will be designed and realized in the near future. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge the problem of tree species recognition from TLS data has received very little attention from the scientific community. It is in this context that we present a novel Computer-Aided Tree Species Identification method based on 3D bark texture analysis. The novelty of our approach resides in the following three key points: (1) 3D salient regions extraction using a new morphological segmentation method that we have called Burst Wind Segmentation, (2) the extraction and pre-annotation of a collection of typical 3D bark patterns, known as scars, from each of the tree species. The pre-annotated scars are stored in a dictionary that we have called ScarBook and they are used as a reference for the comparison of the 3D salient segmented regions, (3) a wide variety of advanced shape, saliency, curvature and roughness features are extracted from the 3D salient segmented regions. To study the performance of our method, an experiment has been carried out on a dataset composed of 969 patches which correspond to 30 cm long segments of the trunk at breast height. Six species among the most dominant species in European forests have been tested with patches of different diameter at breast height values so as to study the identification accuracy with respect to age. The results obtained are very encouraging and promising and they confirm the possibility of identifying tree species using TLS data. [Termes IGN] San DiegoRésumé : (Auteur) Two GEOBIA approaches are compared for their effectiveness in mapping dead trees within island montane forests of Southern California: a spatial contextual approach using an artificial neural network classifier, and a segmentation and multi-pixel classification approach. Both approaches are tested with multitemporal aerial orthoimagery having varying spatial resolutions. Spectral transformation inputs are also tested. An object-based accuracy assessment is conducted. Accuracies range between 30 percent to 90 percent for the dead tree class and are significantly higher for the spatial-contextual approach. Inclusion of spectral transforms increased accuracies by 5 percent for the true object-based approach, up to 13 percent for the spatial contextual approach, and reduced commission error up to 10 percent for both approaches. Masking techniques increased accuracies of the spatial contextual approach by 20 percent. With manual editing, the most accurate maps of individual live and dead trees from the spatial contextual approach are suitable for studying spatio-temporal trends in montane conifer mortality.
