The three methods are semivariogram, edge tracing and an integration of the two methods. The first two methods are used to represent spatial continuity and spatial discontinuity information, respectively, associated with geographic entities, while the integrated method is used to represent both properties. The three methods are used to retrieve seven land cover types; factories, shopping centres, highways, forest, farmland, grasses and residential areas. Results show that between the two independent methods, the semivariogram method generally produces higher retrieval precision and more consistency across the seven types than the edge tracing method. The integrated method considerably outperforms the two independent methods. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) We introduce a new unsupervised segmentation method adapted to describe façade shapes from a single calibrated street level image. The image is first rectified thanks to its vanishing points to facilitate the extraction of facade main structures which are characterized by a horizontal and vertical gradient accumulation which enhances the detection of repetitive structures. Our aim is to build a hierarchy of rectangular regions bounded by the local maxima of the gradient accumulation. The algorithm recursively splits horizontally or vertically the image into two parts by maximizing the total length of regular edges until the radiometric content of the region hypothesis corresponds to a given model (planar and generalized cylinders). A regular edge is a segment of a main gradient direction that effectively matches to a contour of the image. This segmentation could be an interesting tool for facade modelling and is in particular well suited for facade texture compression. [Termes IGN] turbidité des eauxRésumé : (Auteur) The remote sensing of Case 2 water has been far less successful than that of Case 1 water, due mainly to the complex interactions among optically active substances (e.g., phytoplankton, suspended sediments, colored dissolved organic matter, and water) in the former. To address this problem, we developed a spectral decomposition algorithm (SDA), based on a spectral linear mixture modeling approach. Through a tank experiment, we found that the SDA-based models were superior to conventional empirical models (e.g. using single band, band ratio, or arithmetic calculation of band) for accurate estimates of water quality parameters. In this paper, we develop a method for applying the SDA to Landsat-5 TM data on Lake Kasumigaura, a eutrophic lake in Japan characterized by high concentrations of suspended sediment, for mapping chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and non-phytoplankton suspended sediment (NPSS) distributions. The results show that the SDA-based estimation model can be obtained by a tank experiment. Moreover, by combining this estimation model with satellite-SRSs (standard reflectance spectra : i.e., spectral endmembers) derived from biooptical modeling, we can directly apply the model to a satellite image. The same SDA-based estimation model for Chl-a concentration was applied to two Landsat-5 TM images, one acquired in April 1994 and the other in February 2006. The average Chl-a estimation error between the two was 9.9%, a result that indicates the potential robustness of the SDA-based estimation model. The average estimation error of NPSS concentration from the 2006 Landsat-5 TM image was 15.9%. The key point for successfully applying the SDA-based estimation model to satellite data is the method used to obtain a suitable satellite-SRS for each end-member. [Termes IGN] simulation PleiadesRésumé : (Auteur) Among all the issues involved in Geographic Information Science, automating the update of 2D building databases is a crucial and challenging issue. Such an update usually starts out with a manual change detection process. The main goal of this paper is to present a new method to automate the detection of changes in a 2D building database, starting from satellite images. The workflow of our approach is divided into 2 phases. Primitives, extracted from multiple images or from a correlation Digital Surface Model (DSM), are firstly collected for each building and matched with primitives derived from the existing database to achieve a final decision about acceptance or rejection. A specific algorithm, based on the DSM and a computed Digital Terrain Model (DTM), is subsequently used to extract new buildings. The method is here introduced and tested in two test areas, very different regarding the land use and topography. The out-comes of the method are assessed and show the good performance of our system, especially in terms of completeness, robustness and transferability. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In the context of 3D reconstruction of wide urban areas, the use of building footprints has shown to be of great help to achieve both robustness and precision. These footprints however often present inconsistencies with the data (more than one building in the footprint, inner courts, superstructures...) This paper presents a fast and efficient algorithm to enhance the building footprint database in order to make subsequent 3D reconstructions easier, more accurate and more robust. It is based on a segmentation energy that is minimized by a split and merge approach. The algorithm is demonstrated on a wide urban area of one square kilometer.
