[Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) An edge extraction model has been developed that uses multitemporal satellite synthetic aperture radar data to delineate shorelines in estuaries. Using Japanese ALOS PALSAR HH data acquired in December 2006 and JERS-1 L-HH SAR data in December 1994, we mapped shorelines of the outer Pamlico Peninsula, Dare County, North Carolina, USA, spanning 12 years. To assess the validity and accuracy of the delineation, we compared (a) 1994 shorelines versus those derived from the 1993 digital orthophotographs, and (b) 2006 shorelines versus field data collected in February 2007. With promising results, we then analysed and quantified the shoreline changes between 1994 and 2006 on the north, east, and south sides of the Peninsula. Virtually no discernible changes on the north and south sides were found. However, significant landward migration in the middle to southern portion on the east shore was observed. Spatial retreat of shorelines varied greatly, with the maximum rate averaged over a span of 12 years exceeding 11 m year?-1? The results support further monitoring of shorelines in estuaries using active remote sensing and the potential for the methodology developed to identify erosional hotspots. [Termes IGN] subsidenceRésumé : (Auteur) The interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technique is used to detect surface deformations in the French Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal mining basin. Several subsiding areas had already been observed at the sites of Lens, Billy-Montigny, Courrieres and Ostricourt during the 1992-2000 period. InSAR deformation measurements are compared with ground-based levelling measurements and an analysis of the results shows a good agreement for the relative deformations. However, the InSAR study reveals a systematic bias of the absolute levelling values. Our interpretation is that the stability points of the ground-based monitoring network probably moved during the study period. Such cross-checking is particularly important considering the current legal value of the levelling measurements. [Termes IGN] Shanghai (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) In this paper, an unsupervised change-detection approach was proposed to detect new urban areas from multi-temporal SAR images. The novelty of the proposed approach is the joint use of coherence and intensity characteristics of SAR imagery. The approach involves two main steps: (a) the extraction of difference feature containing information on changed areas, and (b) the unsupervised two-dimensional (2D) thresholding. First, two difference features based on the concepts of long-term coherence and backscattering temporal variability are extracted from a series of multitemporal SAR images. Then, the resulting features that represent the INSAR signal temporal variability of changed areas are merged, and a 2D thresholding technique based on the maximum 2D Renyi’s entropy criterion is developed to obtain the change-detection results. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is confirmed with experimental results obtained from a set of six ERS-1/2 SLC SAR images acquired in Shanghai, China. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Object based image analysis (OBIA) is an approach increasingly used in classifying high spatial resolution remote sensing images. Object based image classifiers first segment an image into objects (or image segments), and then classify these objects based on their attributes and spatial relations. Numerous algorithms exist for the first step of the OBIA process, i.e. image segmentation. However, less research has been conducted on the object classification part of OBIA, in particular the spatial relations between objects that are commonly used to construct rules for classifying image objects and refining classification results. In this paper, we establish a context where objects are areal (not points or lines) and non-overlapping (we call this “single-valued” space), and propose a framework of binary spatial relations between segmented objects to aid in object classification. In this framework, scale-dependent “line-like objects” and “point-like objects” are identified from areal objects based on their shapes. Generally, disjoint and meet are the only two possible topological relations between two non-overlapping areal objects. However, a number of quasi- topological relations can be defined when the shapes of the objects involved are considered. Some of these relations are fuzzy and thus quantitatively defined. In addition, we define the concepts of line-like objects (e.g. roads) and point-like objects (e.g. wells), and develop the relations between two line-like objects or two point-like objects. For completeness, cardinal direction relations and distance relations are also introduced in the proposed context. Finally, we implement the framework to extract roads and moving vehicles from an aerial photo. The promising results suggest that our methods can be a valuable tool in defining rules for object based image analysis. Frequent monitoring of urban sprawl is needed to limit the impact of this ongoing phenomenon. This paper proposes precise monitoring of building construction using an object-based classification methodology applied to Spot 5 images with a 2.5 m resolution. An application at a regional scale on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean shows that this building extraction methodology has limitations in the production of reference urban maps because of difficulties in defining the shape and the number of buildings compared to classical photo-interpretation of aerial photography. However, these results are of great value for planning in urban sprawl areas where up-to-date information is lacking because of the rapid pace of house construction and residential development.
