Remote sensing has often been suggested as a viable alternative to time consuming field and aerial investigations to determine forest structural attributes. In this study, 44 stands of recently harvested, regenerating, and old growth forest within the Foothills Model Forest in west-central Alberta were selected to test the ability of pan-sharpened SPOT-5 spectral response to classify stand structure. For each stand, a Structural Complexity Index (SCI) was calculated from field data using principal components analysis. To complement the spectral response data set and further increase accuracy, the normalized difference moisture index (NDMI) and three window sizes (55, 1111, and 2525) of first- (mean and standard deviation) and second-order (homogeneity, entropy, contrast, and correlation) textural measures were calculated over the pan-sharpened image. Stepwise multivariate regression analysis was used to determine the best explanatory model of the SCI using the spectral and textural data. The NDMI, first-order standard deviation and second-order correlation texture measures were better able to explain differences in SCI among the 44 forest stands (r2 = 0.79). The most appropriate window size for the texture measures was 55 indicating that this is a measure only detectable at a very high spatial resolution. The resulting classified SCI values were comparable to the actual field level SCI (r2 = 0.74, p = 0.01) and were limited by the strong variability within stands. Future research may find this measure useful either as a separate parameter or as an indicator of forest age for use in wildlife habitat modelling. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Using Landsat TM data from 1995 and 2000, changes in the landscape erosion pattern of the Yellow River Basin, China were analysed. The aim was to improve our understanding of soil-erosion change so that sustainable land use could be established. First, a soil-erosion intensity index model was developed to study soil-erosion intensity change in the study area. Over the 5 years, the areas of weak erosion, moderate erosion, severe erosion, and very severe erosion all increased. The area of weak erosion increased dramatically by 7.94*105 ha, and areas of slight erosion and acute erosion decreased by 1.93*106 ha and 4.50*104 ha, respectively. The results show that while the intensity of soil erosion has gradually been decreasing as a whole, in some regions the soil erosion is becoming more severe. Based on landscape indices, the pattern of changes in soil erosion over the past 5 years was analysed. The changes in landscape pattern of soil erosion resulted from human activities. Analysis showed that human impact increases fragmentation, having three major effects on landscape pattern, reduction in patch area, variations in patch shape, and changes in spatial pattern. In the study area, population growth, farming, governmental policy and forest degradation are the major factors causing soil erosion change over a 5-year period. At present, the multitemporal approach to thermal anomaly detection is in its early development stage. In case of space-borne surveillance the multitemporal detection is complicated by both spatial and temporal variability of background surface properties, weather influences, viewing geometries, sensor noise, residual misregistration, and other factors. We use the problem of fire detection and the MODIS data to demonstrate that advanced multitemporal detection methods can potentially outperform the operationally used optimized contextual algorithms both under morning and evening conditions. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Automatic road centerline extraction from high-resolution satellite imagery has gained considerable interest recently due to the increasing availability of commercial high-resolution satellite images. In this paper, a hierarchical grouping strategy is proposed to automatically extract main road centerlines from high-resolution satellite imagery. Here hierarchical grouping means that, instead of grouping all segments at once, the selective segments are grouped gradually, and multiple clues are closely integrated into the procedure. By this means, the computational cost can be reduced significantly. Through the stepwise grouping, the detected fragmented line segments eventually form the long main road lines. The proposed method has been tested and validated using several Ikonos and QuickBird images both in open areas and build-up urban environments. The results demonstrate its robustness and viability on extracting salient main road centerlines.
