[Termes IGN] image Landsat-ETM+Résumé : (Auteur) We introduce and evaluate three methods for modeling the spatial distribution of multiple land-cover classes at subpixel scales: (a) sequential categorical swapping, (b) simultaneous categorical swapping, and (c) simulated annealing. Method 1, a modification of a binary pixel-swapping algorithm, allocates each class in turn to maximize internal spatial autocorrelation. Method 2 simultaneously examines all pairs of cell-class combinations within a pixel to determine the most appropriate pairs of sub-pixels to swap. Method 3 employs simulated annealing to swap cells. While convergence is relatively slow, Method 3 offers increased flexibility. Each method is applied to a classified Landsat-7 ETM dataset that has been resampled to a spatial resolution of 210 m, and evaluated for accuracy performance and computational efficiency. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Super-resolution or sub-pixel class mapping is the task of providing fine spatial resolution maps of, for example, landcover classes, from satellite sensor measurements obtained at a coarser spatial resolution. Often, the only information available consists of coarse class fraction data, typically obtained through spectral unmixing. This paper shows how to integrate, in addition to such coarse fractions, class labels at a set of fine pixels obtained independent of the satellite sensor measurements. The integration of such fine spatial resolution information is achieved within the Indicator Kriging formalism in either a prediction or simulation mode. The spatial dissimilarity or texture of class labels at the fine (target) resolution is quantified in a non-parametric way from an analog scene using a set of experimental indicator semivariogram maps. The output of the proposed procedure consists of maps of probabilities of class occurrence, or of a series of simulated class maps characterizing the inherent spatial uncertainty in the super-resolution mapping process. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) The aim is to evaluate the use of time-series of Landsat sensor data acquired over an annual cycle for mapping semi-natural habitats and agricultural land cover. The location is Berwyn Mountains, North Wales, United Kingdom. The methods are Using eCognition Expert, segmentation of the Landsat sensor data was undertaken for actively managed agricultural land based on Integrated Administration and Control System (IACS) land parcel boundaries, whilst a per-pixel level segmentation was undertaken for all remaining areas. Numerical decision rules based on fuzzy logic that coupled knowledge of ecology and the information content of single and multi-date remotely sensed data and derived products (e.g., vegetation indices) were developed to discriminate vegetation types based primarily on inferred differences in phenology, structure, wetness and productivity. The results : The rule-based classification gave a good representation of the distribution of habitats and agricultural land. The more extensive, contiguous and homogeneous habitats could be mapped with accuracies exceeding 80%, although accuracies were lower for more complex environments (e.g., upland mosaics) or those with broad definition (e.g., semi-improved grasslands). The application of a rule-based classification to temporal imagery acquired over selected periods within an annual cycle provides a viable approach for mapping and monitoring of habitats and agricultural land in the United Kingdom that could be employed operationally. The extraction of building boundary is also a crucial and difficult step towards generating city models. This study presents an approach to the tracing and regularization of building boundary from raw lidar point clouds. The process consists of a sequence of four steps: separate building and non-building lidar points; segment lidar points that belong to the same building; trace building boundary points; and regularize the boundary. For separation, a slope based 1D bi-directional filter is used. The segmentation step is a region-growing approach. By modifying a convex hull formation algorithm, the building boundary points are traced and connected to form an approximate boundary. In the final step, all boundary points are included in a hierarchical least squares solution with perpendicularity constraints to determine a regularized rectilinear boundary. Our tests conclude that the uncertainty of regularized building boundary tends to be linearly proportional to the lidar point spacing. It is shown that the regularization precision is at 18 percent to 21 percent of the lidar point spacing, and the maximum offset of the determined building boundary from the original lidar points is about the same as the lidar point spacing. Limitation of lidar data resolution and errors in previous filtering processes may cause artefacts in the final regularized building boundary. This paper presents the mathematical and algorithmic formulations along with stepwise illustrations. Results from Baltimore city, Toronto city, and Purdue University campus are evaluated.
