[Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) This study presents detection of the collapsed buildings caused by earthquakes using digital elevation models (DEMs) created from pre- and post-earthquake stereo aerial photographs. It is based on the idea that changes in the heights of collapsed buildings can be detected. The study was conducted using aerial photographs taken before (1994) and after (1999) the Izmit earthquake in Turkey. DEMs were created automatically from both pre- and post-earthquake aerial photographs at 5m spatial resolution. The DEMs created from the two epochs were then differenced and the difference DEM obtained was analysed building by building to detect those buildings whose height difference between pre- and post-earthquake exceeded a specified threshold level. The producer's accuracy for detecting the collapsed buildings was found to be 84%. The results show that the difference DEM of the pre- and post-earthquake aerial images can reveal successfully the collapsed buildings caused by the earthquake. It was found that determining an optimum threshold level between change and no change pixels of the difference DEM is important. Sensors already in existence (IKONOS, Quickbird, SPOT 5, Orbview) or due to be launched in the near future will reach 1-5 m resolution. These very high resolution (VHR) data will provide more details of the urban areas, but it seems evident that they will create additional problems in terms of information extraction using automatic classification. In this framework, this paper examines the potential of the spectral/textural approach to improve the classification accuracy of intra-urban land cover types. The utility of the textural analysis was measured in comparison with multi-spectral per-pixel classifications. Haralick's second-order statistics were applied to the co-occurrence matrix. Four texture indices with six window sizes created from panchromatic images were tested on images at high to very high resolutions (10-1 m). The results show that the optimal index improving the global classification accuracy is the homogeneity measure, with a 7 x 7 window size. Moreover, for 1 m images, texture measure of homogeneity allows one to decrease the shadows. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Land-cover classification of satellite images is an important task in analysis of remote sensing imagery. Segmentation is one of the widely used techniques in this regard. One of the important approaches for segmentation of an image is by clustering the pixels in the spectral domain, where pixels that share some common spectral property are put in the same group, or cluster. However, such spectral clustering completely ignores the spatial information contained in the pixels, which is often an important consideration for good segmentation of images. Moreover, the clustering algorithms often provide locally optimal solutions. In this paper, we propose to perform. image segmentation by a genetically guided unsupervised fuzzy clustering technique where some spatial information of the pixels is incorporated. Two ways of incorporating spatial information are suggested. The characteristic of this technique is that it is able to determine automatically the appropriate number of clusters without making any assumptions regarding the dataset. while attempting to provide globally near optimal solutions. In order to evolve the appropriate number of clusters, the chromosome encoding scheme is enhanced to incorporate the don't care symbol (#). Real-coded genetic algorithm with appropriatly defined operators is used. A cluster validity index is used as a measure of the value of the chromosomes. Results, both quantitative and qualitative are demonstrated for several images, including a satellite image of a part of the city of Mumbai. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Most multi-source forest inventory (MSFI) applications have thus far been based on the use of medium resolution satellite imagery, such as Landsat TM. The high plot and stand level estimation errors of these applications have, however, restricted their use in forest management planning. One reason suggested for the high estimation errors has been the coarse spatial resolution of the imagery employed. Therefore, very high spatial resolution (VHR) imagery sources provide interesting data for stand-level inventory applications. However, digital interpretation of VHR imagery, such as aerial photographs, is more complicated than the use of traditional satellite imagery. Pixel-by-pixel analysis is not applicable to VHR imagery because a single pixel is small in relation to the object of interest, i.e. a forest stand, and therefore it does not adequately represent the spectral properties of a stand. Additionally in aerial photographs, the spectral properties of the objects are dependent on their location in the image. Therefore, MSFI applications based on aerial imagery must employ features that are less sensitive to their location in the image and that have been derived using the spatial neighborhood of each pixel, e.g. a square-shaped window of pixels. In this experiment several spectral and textural features were extracted from color-infrared aerial photographs and employed in estimation of forest attributes. The features were extracted from original, normalized difference vegetation index and channel ratio images. The correlations between the extracted image features and forest attributes measured from sample plots were examined. Additionally, the spectral and textural features were used for estimating the forest attributes of sample plots, applying the k nearest neighbor estimation method. The results show that several spectral and textural image features that are moderately or well correlated with the forest attributes. Furthermore, the accuracy of forest attribute estimation can be significantly improved by a careful selection of image features.
