[Termes IGN] statistique mathématiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a methodology to map classes of degraded forest in the Eastern Amazon. Forest degradation field data, available in the literature, and 1-m resolution IKONOS image were linked with fraction images (vegetation, nonphotosynthetic vegetation (NPV), soil and shade) derived from spectral mixture models applied to a Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) 4 multispectral image. The forest degradation map was produced in two steps. First, we investigated the relationship between ground (i.e., field and IKONOS data) and satellite scales by analyzing statistics and performing visual analyses of the field classes in terms of fraction values. This procedure allowed us to define four classes of forest at the SPOT 4 image scale, which included: intact forest; logged forest (recent and older logged forests in the field); degraded forest (heavily burned, heavily logged and burned forests in the field) ; and regeneration (old heavily logged and old heavily burned forest in the field). Next, we used a decision tree classifier (DTQ to define a set of rules to separate the forest classes using the fraction images. We classified 35% of the forest area (2097.3 km2 ) as intact forest. Logged forest accounted for 56% of the forest area and 9% of the forest area was classified as degraded forest. The resultant forest degradation map showed good agreement (86% overall accuracy) with areas of degraded forest visually interpreted from two IKONOS images. In addition, high correlation (R2 = 0.97) was observed between the total live aboveground biomass of degraded forest classes (defined at the field scale) and the NPV fraction image. The NPV fraction also improved our ability to mapping of old selectively logged forests. [Termes IGN] zone tropicale humideRésumé : (Auteur) Mangroves reach their optimal development in the wet tropics although some little known mangrove stands are reported in subtropical arid coastlines especially from the Red Sea to Pakistan where they form one of the driest mangrove habitats in the world. Because they constitute the only available evergreen forest in hyperarid warm coastal areas, the main wetlands for migratory birds and essential nursery ground for many species of fish, it Is imperative to produce a sufficiently accurate map for monitoring their changes and for their protection. The main objective of the present work is to test and to select the best methodological approach to discriminate and map the mangroves and related coastal ecosystems in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, a coastal stretch about 750km long. It was found that the best practical results were produced by the Maximum Likelihood and Mahalanobis classifications although some limitations remain unsolved, especially in open ecosystems, which are common in arid areas. Moreover, SPOT4 HighResolution Visible InfraRed (HRVIR) data proves at least as efficient as TERRA ASTER data, in spite of a slightly finer ground resolution and the great number of channels for ASTER. Ultimately, the most appropriate working scale for mapping coastal habitats, compatible with pixel size, is in the order of 1/25 000. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) The long-time historical evolution and recent rapid development of' BeiJing, China, present before us a unique urban structure. A 10-metre spatial resolution SPOT panchromatic image of Beijing has been studied to capture the spatial patterns of the city. Supervised image classifications were performed Using statistical and structural texture features produced from the image. Textural features, including eight texture features from the Grey-Level Cooccurrence Matrix (GI-CM) method ; a computationally efficient texture feature, the Number of Different Grey-levels (NDG), and a structural texture feature, Edge Density (ED), were evaluated. It was found that generally single texture features performed poorly. Classification accuracy increased with increasing number of texture features until three or four texture features were combined. The more texture features in the combination, the smaller difference between different combinations. The results also show that a lower number of texture features were needed for more homogeneous areas. NDG and ED combined with GLCM texture features produced similar results as the same number of GLCM texture features. Two classification schemes were adopted, stratified classification and non-stratified classification. The best stratified classification result was better than the best non-stratified classification result. [Termes IGN] traitement automatique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Updating digital map databases to reflect continuous changes is a major task, which could be significantly reduced by introducing an automated change-detection process. We suggest an algorithm inspired by the specific problem of updating the Danish National Topographic Map Database (TOP10DK). The emphasis is on buildings, which are very important mapping objects. The algorithm uses vector and spectral data as input to an unsupervised spectral classification method which controls a subsequent Mahalanobis classification step. For evaluation, we present four test cases based on the TOP10DK database in combination with RGB and color-infrared (CIR) aerial photos. A main problem is roofs covered with roofing felt, which are hard to discriminate spectrally from roads. Apart from that, RGB photos are barely sufficient for change detection, while CIR data give more satisfactory results. Refinements are, however, still needed to reduce the number of false alarms. [Termes IGN] objet géographique linéaireRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents an almost unsupervised fusion algorithm on linear features (LF) extraction in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometric data, in particular for mangroves/shorelines and thin internal channels. The spatial information on LFs is first extracted in the coherence image, where they are wider and more visible : water regions (in particular thin internal channels) are dark areas (low coherence) due to the temporal decorrelation of backscattering signals in these and surrounding regions, whereas conventional vegetation regions are brighter areas (high coherence). These approximate locations of LFs are further refined by using the edge map coming from a semantic fuzzy fusion of the coefficient of variation (CV) and the ratio of local means (RLM) measured in the amplitude image. The final detection of LFs is then performed by merging the two fuzzy inputs : the spatial information and the edge location map. The membership degree statistics of CV and RLM semantic fusion measures are introduced in order to illustrate the location detection ability. The originality of this method in comparison with conventional approaches is in the fusion scheme that follows the interpreter behavior by using first the coherence image for a fuzzy detection where thin LFs are more visible, but have low location accuracy, and then the amplitude image where they are poorly visible, but with higher location accuracy, to obtain improved results. A quantitative performance evaluation is also presented. The method has been applied on real interferometric SAR images from European Remote Sensing satellites over the western part of Cameroon.
