[Termes IGN] milieu urbainRésumé : (Auteur) Urbanization has profound effects on the environment at local, regional, and global scales. Effective detection of urban change using remote sensing data will be an essential component of global environmental change research, regional planning. and natural resource management. This paper presents results from an ARTMAP neural network to detect urban change with Landsat TM images from two periods. Classification of urban change, and, in particular, conversion of agriculture to urban, was statistically more accurate with ARTMAP than with a more conventional technique, the Bayesian maximum-likelihood classifier (MLC). The effect of different levels of class aggregation on the performance of change detection was also explored with ARTMAP and MLC. Because ARTMAP explicitly allows "many-to-one "mapping, classification using coarse class resolution and fine class resolution training data generated similar results. Together, these results suggest that ARTMAP can reduce labor and computational costs associated with assembling training data while concurrently generating more accurate urban change detection results. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Recent advances in digital airborne sensors and satellite platforms make spatially accurate, high-resolution multispectral imagery readily available. These advances provide the opportunity for a host of new applications to address and solve problems. High-resolution imagery is particularly well suited to urban applications. Previous data sources (such as Landsat TM) did not show the spatial detail necessary to provide many urban planning solutions. This paper provides an overview of a project in which one-meter digital imagery was used to produce a map of pervious and impervious surfaces to be used by the city of Scottsdale, Arizona for storm-water estimation. The increased spatial information in one-meter or less resolution imagery strains the usefulness of image classification using traditional supervised and unsupervised spectral classification algorithms. This study assesses the accuracy of three different methods for extracting land-cover/land-use information from high-resolution imagery of urban environments : (1) combined supervised/unsupervised spectral classification, (2) raster-based spatial modeling and (3) image segmentation classification using tree analysis. A discussion of the results and relative merits of each method is included. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we investigate the usefulness of high-resolution multispectral satellite imagery for classification of urban and suburban areas and present a fuzzy logic methodology to improve classification accuracy. Panchromatic and multispectral IKONOS image datasets are analyzed for two urban locations in this study. Both multispectral and pansharpened multispectral images are first classified using a traditional maximum-likelihood approach. Maximum-likelihood classification accuracies between 79 % to 87 % were achieved with significant misclassification error between the spectrally similar Road and Building urban land cover types. A number of different texture measures were investigated, and a length-width contextual measure is developed. These spatial measures were used to increase the discrimination between spectrally similar classes, thereby yielding higher accuracy urban land cover maps. Finally, a hierarchical fuzzy classification approach that makes use of both spectral and spatial information is presented. This technique is shown to increase the discrimination between spectrally similar urban land cover classes and results in classification accuracies that are 8 % to I I% larger than those from the traditional maximumlikelihood approach. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The unprecedented large size and high dimensionality of existing geographic datasets make the complex patterns that potentially lurk in the data hard to find. Clustering is one of the most important techniques for geographic knowledge discovery. However, existing clustering methods have two severe drawbacks for this purpose. First, spatial clustering methods focus on the specific characteristics of distributions in 2or 3D space, while general-purpose highdimensional clustering methods have limited power in recognizing spatial patterns that involve neighbors. Second, clustering methods in general are not geared toward allowing the humancomputer interaction needed to effectively teaseout complex patterns.
In the current paper, an approach is proposed to open up the "black box" of the clustering process for easy understanding, steering, focusing and interpretation, and thus to support an effective exploration of large and high dimensional geographic data. The proposed approach involves building a hierarchical spatial cluster structure ithin the highdimensional feature space, and using this combined space for discovering multidimensional (combined spatial and nonspatial) patterns with efficient computational clustering methods and highly interactive visualization techniques. More specifically, this includes the integration of: (1) a hierarchical spatial clustering method to generate a 1D spatial cluster ordering that preserves the hierarchical cluster structure, and (2) a density and gridbased technique to effectively support the interactive identification of interesting subspaces and subsequent searching for clusters in each subspace. The implementation of the proposed approach is in a fully open and interactive manner supported by various visualization techniques.

[Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present some improvements to urban area characterization by means of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images using multitemporal and multiangle datasets. The first aim of this research is to show that a temporal sequence of satellite SAR data may improve the classification accuracy and the discriminability of land cover classes in an urban area. Similarly, a second point worth discussing is to what extent multiangle SAR data allows extracting complementary urban features, exploiting different acquisition geometries. To these aims, in this paper, we show results on the same urban test site (Pavia, northern Italy), referring to a sequence of European Remote Sensing Satellite 1/2 (ERS1/2) Cband images and to a set of simulated Xband data with a finer spatial resolution and different viewing angles. In particular, the multitemporal data is analyzed by means of a novel procedure based on a neurofuzzy classifier whose input is a subset of the ERS sequence chosen using the histogram distance index. Instead, the multiangle dataset is used to provide a better characterization of the road network in the area, overcoming effects due to the orientation of the SAR sensor.
