[Termes IGN] réflectanceRésumé : (Auteur) This study evaluates six different approaches to classifying and mapping fire severity using multi-temporal Landsat Thematic Mapper data. The six approaches tested include: two based on temporal image differencing and ratioing between pre-fire and post-fire images, two based on principal component analysis of pre- and post-fire imagery, and two based on artificial neural networks, one using just post-fire imagery and the other both pre- and post-fire imagery. Our results demonstrated the potential value for any of these methods to provide quantitative fire severity maps, but one of the image differencing methods (ND4/7) provided a flexible, robust, and analytically simple approach that could be applied anywhere in the Continental U.S. Based on the results of this test, the ND4/7 was implemented operationally to classify and map fire severity over 1.2 million hectares burned in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Northern Great Plains during the 2000 fire season, as well as the 2001 fire season (Gmelin and Brewer, 2002). Approximately the same procedure was adopted in 2001 by the USDA Forest Service, Remote Sensing Applications Center to produce Burned Area Reflectance Classifications for national-level support of Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation activities (Orlemann, 2002). [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) AdaBoost, a machine learning technique, is employed for supervised classification of land-cover categories of geostatistical data. We introduce contextual classifiers based on neighboring pixels. First, posterior probabilities are calculated at all pixels. Then averages of the log posteriors are calculated in different neighborhoods and are then used as contextual classification functions. Weights for the classification functions can be determined by minimizing the empirical risk with multiclass. Finally, a convex combination of classification functions is obtained. The classification is performed by a noniterative maximization procedure. The proposed method is applied to artificial multispectral images and benchmark datasets. The performance of the proposed method is excellent and similar to Markov-random-field-based classifier, which requires an iterative maximization procedure. [Termes IGN] réflectance végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) A non-conventional approach for the estimation of leaf area index (LAI) and leaf angle distribution (LAD), based on the use of information contained in multiangular images and the inversion of a canopy ray tracing model, is proposed in this work. As an alternative to the use of overall image reflectance data, the image fraction components, i.e. sunlit and shaded leaves and soil, are obtained by supervised classification of groundbased multiangular images acquired using an inexpensive colour infrared camera, the Dycam ADC. These data are used for the inversion of a numerical model of a vegetation canopy in which the latter is described as composed of randomly distributed disks (leaves). The model was developed using the POV-ray ray tracer. Model inversion is carried out using the look-up-table approach. The proposed methodology was tested using an extensive data set gathered on the potato crop during experimental trials carried out at Viterbo (Italy) for 3 years. The results show that LAI was successfully estimated with a RMSE varying from 0.29 to 0.75 in the different years. The potential sources of error in both estimated and measured LAI values are extensively discussed. [Termes IGN] méthode de Monte-CarloRésumé : (Auteur) The number of training samples per class (n) required for accurate Maximum Likelihood (ML) classification is known to be affected by the number of bands (p) in the input image. However, the general rule which defines that n should be 10p to 30p is often enforced universally in remote sensing without questioning its relevance to the complexity of the specific discrimination problem. Furthermore, identifying this many training samples is often problematic when many classes and/or many bands are used. It is important, then, to test how this generally accepted rule matches common remote sensing discrimination problems because it could be unnecessarily restrictive for many applications. This study was primarily conducted in order to test whether the general rule defining the relationship between n and p was well-suited for ML classification of a relatively simple remote sensing-based discrimination problem. To summarise the mean response of n-to-p for our study site, a Monte Carlo procedure was used to randomly stack various numbers of bands into thousands of separate image combinations that were then classified using an ML algorithm. The bands were randomly selected from a 119-band Enhanced Thematic Mapper-plus (ETM+) dataset comprised of 17 images acquired during the 2001-2002 southern hemisphere summer agricultural growing season over an irrigation area in south-eastern Australia. Results showed that the number of training samples needed for accurate ML classification was much lower than the current widely accepted rule. Due to the asymptotic nature of the relationship, we found that 95% of the accuracy attained using n = 30p samples could be achieved by using approximately 2p to 4p samples, or Numéro de notice : A2005-434 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.rse.2005.08.011 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2005.08.011 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27570
