[Termes IGN] source de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Land cover mapping plays an important role for a wide spectrum of applications that are ranging from climate modeling to food security. However, it is a common case that several and partially conflicting land cover products are available at the same time over a same area, where each product suffers from specific limitations and lack of accuracy. In order to take advantage of the best features of each product while at the same time attenuating their respective weaknesses, this paper is proposing a methodology that allows the user to combine these products together based on a general framework involving maximum entropy/minimum divergence principles, Bayesian data fusion and Bayesian updating. First, information brought by each land cover product is coded in terms of inequality constraints so that a first estimation of their quality can be computed based on a maximum entropy/minimum divergence principle. Information from these various land cover products can then be fused afterwards in a Bayesian framework, leading to a single map with an associated measure of uncertainty. Finally, it is shown how the additional information brought by control data can help improving this fused map through a Bayesian updating procedure. The first part of the paper is briefly presenting the most important theoretical results, while the second part is illustrating the use of this suggested approach for a specific area in Belgium, where five different land cover products are at hand. The benefits and limitations of this approach are finally discussed by the light of the results for this case study. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (Auteur) We examine how the configurations in nearest neighbor imputation affect the performance of predicted species-specific diameter distributions. The simultaneous nearest neighbor imputation for all tree species and separate imputation by tree species are evaluated with total volume calibration as a prediction method for diameter distributions. This study considers the predictions of species-specific diameter distributions in Finnish boreal forests by means of airborne laser scanning (ALS) data and aerial images. The aim was to investigate different configurations in non-parametric nearest neighbor (NN) imputation and to determine how changes in configurations affect prediction error rates for timber assortment volumes and the error indices of the diameter distributions. Non-parametric NN imputation was used as a modeling method and was applied in two different ways: (1) diameter distributions were predicted at the same time for all tree species by simultaneous NN imputation, and (2) diameter distributions were predicted for one tree species at a time by separate NN imputation. Calibration to a regression-based total volume prediction was applied in both cases. The results indicated that significant changes in the volume prediction error rates for timber assortment and for error indices can be achieved by the selection of responses, calibration to total volume, and separate NN imputation by tree species. verall, the selection of response variables in NN imputation and calibration to total volume improved the predicted diameter distribution error rates. The most successful prediction performance of diameter distribution was achieved by separate NN imputation by tree species. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) This research presents a processing workflow to automatically find damaged building areas in an urban context. The input data requirements are high-resolution multi-view images, acquired from airborne platform. The elevations are derived from a dense surface model generated with photogrammetric methods. With the principal objective of rapid response in emergency situations, two different processing roadmaps are proposed, semi-supervised and unsupervised. Both of them follow a two-step workflow of building detection and building health estimation. Optionally, cadastral layers may serve as a-priori knowledge on building location. The semi-supervised approach involves a data training step, while the unsupervised approach exploits the similarities and dissimilarities between sets of features calculated over the detected buildings. The change detection task is formulated as a classification task defined over a conditional random field. The algorithms are evaluated using two datasets (Vexcel and Midas cameras) and results are compared with ground truth data and specific metrics. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (Auteur) Key message: The outcome of the present study leads to the application of a spatially explicit rule-based expert system (RBES) algorithm aimed at automatically classifying forest areas according to the European Forest Types (EFT) system of nomenclature at pan-European scale level. With the RBES, the EFT system of nomenclature can be now easily implemented for objective, replicable, and automatic classification of field plots for forest inventories or spatial units (pixels or polygons) for thematic mapping.
Context: Forest Types classification systems are aimed at stratifying forest habitats. Since 2006, a common scheme for classifying European forests into 14 categories and 78 types (European Forest Types, EFT) exists.
Aims: This work presents an innovative method and automated classification system that, in an objective and replicable way, can accurately classify a given forest habitat according to the EFT system of nomenclature.
Methods: A rule-based expert system (RBES) was adopted as a transparent approach after comparison with the well-known Random Forest (RF) classification system. The experiment was carried out based on the information acquired in the field in 2010 ICP level I plots in 17 European countries. The accuracy of the automated classification is evaluated by comparison with an independent classification of the ICP plots into EFT carried out during the BioSoil project field survey. Finally, the RBES automated classifier was tested also for a pixel-based classification of a pan-European distribution map of beech-dominated forests.
Results: The RBES successfully classified 94% of the plots, against a 92% obtained with RF. When applied to the mapped domain, the accuracy obtained with the RBES for the beech forest map classification was equal to 95%.
Conclusion: The RBES algorithm successfully automatically classified field plots and map pixels on the basis of the EFT system of nomenclature. The EFT system of nomenclature can be now easily and objectively implemented in operative transnational European forest monitoring programs.
