[Termes IGN] Pinus (genre)Résumé : (Auteur) Responding to an increasing interest in studying vegetation changes over time, we review current methods of processing black and white digital aerial photographs in order to classify tree cover in pinyon-juniper woodlands. Besides applying commonly used clustering and supervised maxim likelihood methods, we have developed a new classifier, nearest edge thresholding, which is unsupervised and based on the principals of edge detection and density slicing. Comparison of the three methods' abilities to predict field values at plot scales of 100 m2 to 900 m2 shows this new method is better or comparable to others at all scales, can be easily applied to digital imagery, and has high correspondence with ground-truthed field values of tree cover. [Termes IGN] Washington D.C.Résumé : (Auteur) A methodology was developed to interpret and assess land cover change between 1991 and 1999 in Central Puget Sound, Washington at several scales (landscape, sub-basins, and 90 m grid window) relevant to regional and local decision makers. Land cover data are derived from USGS Landsat (Thematic Mapper and Enhanced Thematic Mapper +) images of Central Puget Sound. Landsat data were registered, intercalibrated, and corrected for atmosphere and topography to ensure accuracy of land cover change assessment. We apply a hybrid classification method to each image to address the spectral heterogeneity of urbanizing regions. The method combines a supervised classification approach with a spectral unmixing approach to produce seven classes: > 75 percent impervious, 15 to 75 percent impervious, forest, grass, clear cut, bare soil, and water. Land cover change is identified using the direct spatial comparison of classified images derived independentlyfor each time period. We assess that the overall accuracy of each classified image was 91 Percent for 1991 and 88 percent for 1999 respectively, which produces an accuracy of 85 percent for the change analysis. Our results show that urban growth over the last decade has produced an overall 6.7 percent increase in paved area. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Urban mapping using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery presents numerous challenges. These include spectral mixing of diverse land cover components within pixels, spectral confusion with other land cover features such as fallow agricultural fields and the fact that urban classes of interest are of the land use and not the land cover category. A new methodology to address these issues is proposed. This approach involves, as a first step, the generation of two independent but rudimentary land cover products, one spectral-based at the pixel level and the other segment-based. These classifications are then merged through a rule-based approach to generate a final product with enhanced land use classes and accuracy. A comprehensive evaluation of derived products of Ottawa, Calgary and cities in southwestern Ontario is presented based on conventional ground reference data as well as inter-classification consistency analyses. Producer accuracies of 78% and 73% have been achieved for urban 'residential' and 'commercial/industrial' classes. respectively. The capability of Landsat TM to detect low density residential areas is assessed based on dwelling and population data derived from aerial photography and the 2001 Canadian census. For low population densities (i.e. below 3000 persons/km2), density is observed to be monotonically related to the fraction of pixels labeled 'residential'. At higher densities, the fraction of pixels labeled 'residential' remains constant due to Landsat's inability to distinguish between high-rise apartment dwellings and commercial/industrial structures. [Termes IGN] statistique descriptiveRésumé : (Auteur) A semantic, statistical approach to reconciling data with different ontologies is introduced. It was applied to UK land cover datasets from 1990 and 2000 in order to identify land cover change. The approach combined expression of expert opinion about how the semantics of the two datasets relate with spectral homogeneity metadata. A sample of the changes identified was assessed by field validation. Change was identified in 41 percent of the visited parcels, and all of the false positives were found to be due to classification error in either dataset. Thus, the approach reliably identifies inconsistency between two datasets, and the results indicate the suitability of uncertainty formalisms. The inclusion of extensive object-level metadata by the data producers greatly facilitates practical solutions to problems of data interoperability. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Building generalization is a difficult operation due to the complexity of the spatial distribution of buildings and for reasons of spatial recognition. In this study, building generalization is decomposed into two steps, i.e. building grouping and generalization execution. The neighbourhood model in urban morphology provides global constraints for guiding the global partitioning of building sets on the whole map by means of roads and rivers, by which enclaves, blocks, superblocks or neighbourhoods are formed, whereas the local constraints from Gestalt principles provide criteria for the further grouping of enclaves, blocks, superblocks and/or neighbourhoods. In the grouping process, graph theory, Delaunay triangulation and the Voronoi diagram are employed as supporting techniques. After grouping, some useful information, such as the sum of the building's area, the mean separation and the standard deviation of the separation of buildings, is attached to each group. By means of the attached information, an appropriate operation is selected to generalize the corresponding groups. Indeed, the methodology described brings together a number of welldeveloped theories/techniques, including graph theory, Delaunay triangulation, the Voronoi diagram, urban morphology and Gestalt theory, in such a way that multiscale products can be derived.
