This contrasts with the current availability of affordable and efficient snow monitoring methods. In this study, a novel approach is presented to determine spatial snow depth distribution in challenging alpine terrain that was tested during a field campaign performed in the Tarfala valley, Kebnekaise mountains, northern Sweden, in April 2019. The combination of a multispectral camera and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was used to derive three-dimensional (3D) snow surface models via Structure from Motion (SfM) with direct georeferencing. The main advantage over conventional photogrammetric surveys is the utilization of accurate Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning which enables direct georeferencing of the images, and therefore eliminates the need for ground control points. The proposed method is capable of producing high-resolution 3D snow-covered surface models (7 cm/pixel) of alpine areas up to eight hectares in a fast, reliable and affordable way. The test sites’ average snow depth was 160 cm with an average standard deviation of 78 cm. The overall Root-Mean-Square Errors (RMSE) of the snow depth range from 11.52 cm for data acquired in ideal surveying conditions to 41.03 cm in aggravated light and wind conditions. Results of this study suggest that the red components in the electromagnetic spectrum, i.e., the red, red edge, and near-infrared (NIR) band, contain the majority of information used in photogrammetric processing. The experiments highlighted a significant influence of the multi-spectral imagery on the quality of the final snow depth estimation as well as a strong potential to reduce processing times and computational resources by limiting the dimensionality of the imagery through the application of a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) before the photogrammetric 3D reconstruction. The proposed method is part of closing the scale gap between discrete point measurements and regional-scale remote sensing and complements large-scale remote sensing data and snow model output with an adequate validation source. However, conventional point-based co-location pattern discovery methods ignore spatial movements between locations and thus may generate erroneous findings when applied to spatial flows. Despite recent advances, there is still a lack of methods for analyzing multivariate flows. To bridge the gap, this paper formulates a novel problem of FCLP discovery and presents an effective detection method based on frequent-pattern mining and spatial statistics. We first define a flow co-location index to quantify the co-location frequency of different features in flow neighborhoods, and then employ a bottom-up method to discover all frequent FCLPs. To further establish the statistical significance of the results, we develop a flow pattern reconstruction method to model the benchmark null hypothesis of independence conditioning on univariate flow characteristics (e.g. flow autocorrelation). Synthetic experiments with predefined FCLPs verify the advantages of our method in terms of correctness over available alternatives. A case study using individual home-work commuting flow data in the Chicago Metropolitan Area demonstrates that residence- or workplace-based co-location patterns tend to overestimate the co-location frequency of people with different occupations and could lead to inconsistent results. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (auteur) Maps in the form of digital images are widely available in geoportals, Web pages, and other data sources. The metadata of map images, such as spatial extents and place names, are critical for their indexing and searching. However, many map images have either mismatched metadata or no metadata at all. Recent developments in deep learning offer new possibilities for enriching the metadata of map images via image-based information extraction. One major challenge of using deep learning models is that they often require large amounts of training data that have to be manually labeled. To address this challenge, this paper presents a deep learning approach with GIS-based data augmentation that can automatically generate labeled training map images from shapefiles using GIS operations. We utilize such an approach to enrich the metadata of map images by adding spatial extents and place names extracted from map images. We evaluate this GIS-based data augmentation approach by using it to train multiple deep learning models and testing them on two different datasets: a Web Map Service image dataset at the continental scale and an online map image dataset at the state scale. We then discuss the advantages and limitations of the proposed approach. In this study, seasonal variations in rainfall interception loss and canopy storage capacity as driven by canopy structure were predicted and the linkages were tested using seasonal filed measurements. The study was conducted in nine 50 m × 50 m Robinia pseudoacacia plots in the semiarid region of China’s Loess Plateau. Gross rainfall, throughfall and stemflow were measured in seasons with and without leaves in 2015 and 2016. Results show that measured average interception loss for the nine plots were 17.9% and 9.4% of gross rainfall during periods with leaves (the growing season) and without leaves, respectively. Average canopy storage capacity estimated using an indirect method was 1.3 mm in the growing season and 0.2 mm in the leafless season. Correlations of relative interception loss and canopy storage capacity to canopy variables were highest for leaf/wood area index (LAI/WAI) and canopy cover, followed by bark area, basal area, tree height and stand density. Combined canopy cover, leaf/wood area index and bark area multiple regression models of interception loss and canopy storage capacity were established for the growing season and in the leafless season in 2015. It explained 97% and 96% of the variations in relative interception loss during seasons with and without leaves, respectively. It also explained 98% and 99% of the variations in canopy storage capacity during seasons with and without leaves, respectively. The empirical regression models were validated using field data collected in 2016. The models satisfactorily predicted relative interception loss and canopy storage capacity during seasons with and without leaves. This study provides greater understanding about the effects of changes in tree canopy structure (e.g., dieback or mortality) on hydrological processes. [Termes IGN] similitude sémantiqueRésumé : (auteur) Digital libraries represent the most valuable resource for storing, querying, and retrieving scientific literature. Traditionally, the reader/analyst aims to compose a set of articles based on keywords, according to his/her preferences, and manually inspect the resulting list of documents. Except for the articles which share citations or common keywords, the results retrieved will be limited to those which fulfill a syntactic match. Besides, if instead of having an article as a reference, the user has an image, the process of finding and exploring articles with similar content becomes infeasible. This paper proposes a visual analytic methodology for exploring and analyzing scientific document collections that consider both textual and image content. The proposed technique relies on combining multiple Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) components and multidimensional projection to map the documents to a visual space based on their similarity, thus enabling an interactive exploration. Moreover, we extend its analytical capabilities with visual resources to display complementary information on selected documents that uncover hidden patterns and semantic relations. We evidence the effectiveness of our methodology through three case studies and a user evaluation, which attest to its usefulness during the process of scientific collections exploration.
