[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The principle of using induction rules based on spatial environmental data to model a soil map has previously been demonstrated. Whilst the general pattern of classes of large spatial extent and those with close association with geology were delineated, small classes and the detailed spatial pattern of the map were less well rendered. Here we examine several strategies to improve the quality of the soil map models generated by rule induction. Terrain attributes that are bettersuited to landscape description at a resolution of 250m are introduced as predictors of soil type. A map sampling strategy is developed. Classification error is reduced by using boosting rather than crossvalidation to improve the model. Further, the benefit of incorporating the local spatial context for each environmental variable into the rule induction is examined. The best model was achieved by sampling in proportion to the spatial extent of the mapped classes, boosting the decision trees, and using spatial contextual information extracted from the environmental variables. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) The pervasive problems generated by urban sprawl have prompted us to examine methods for delineating the extent of suburban land cover in Georgia. This paper assesses the advantages and disadvantages of two different methods of mapping suburban neighborhoods: traditional unsupervised classification of Landsat 5 TM data and a newly devised procedure for editing and buffering road coverages. We conclude that, while the amount of time required to edit and buffer road coverages is significantly higher than that for traditional remote sensing techniques, the improved thematic accuracy, spatial contiguity, and potential future uses of the resulting dataset justifies its use in a statewide mapping program. [Termes IGN] Thematic MapperRésumé : (Auteur) Coastal areas comprise some of the world's most important and sensitive ecosystems. Although optical remote sensing systems have demonstrated an ability to map land cover in many coastal environments, spectral confusion has also been reported. The parameters of SAR imagery suggest that combinations of SAR and optical data may improve land-cover classification accuracy. Seven satellite SAR data sets were merged with TM data using four techniques. These were tested by classifying 11 upland and wetland land covers in a rapidly urbanizing coastal area of the northeast United States. Not all SABITM combinations bettered the accuracy obtained using TM data alone. In general, simple techniques improved accuracy more than did complex image merge methods. Although one SAR image proved superior overall, improvement in detection accuracy varied among individual land-cover categories and SAR data. The results point to the possible benefits of hierarchical-layered classifications. [Termes IGN] test statistiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Positional accuracy estimates of linear features based on their welldefined points can be significantly different than the accuracy estimates determined from their adjoining lines. A case study was conducted to determine both the cause of this difference as well as the relative effect of the number of points used in calculating the point-based accuracy estimate. Results showed that : (1) the difference between accuracy estimates was primarily due to dissimilar criteria for measuring closeness of primitive features ; and (2) the current US requirement of using 20 well-defined points provided a reasonable estimation of accuracy for the case study. The differences in accuracy estimates described in this study should impact both the definition of geospatial accuracy standards, and the interpretation of geographical analyses with respect to error propagation.
