[Termes IGN] recensement démographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The collection of population by census is laborious, time consuming and expensive, and often only available at limited temporal and spatial scales. Remote sensing based population estimation has been employed as a viable alternative for providing population estimates based on indicators that make use of two-dimensional areal information of buildings or one-dimensional length information of roads The recent advancement of LIDAR remote sensing provides the opportunity to add the third dimension of height information into the modeling of population distribution. This study explores the use of building volumes derived from LIDAR as a population indicator. Our study shows the volume-based model consistently outperforms area and length-based models at the census block level. Additionally, the study examines the impact of spatial autocorrelation, the presence of which violates the independence assumption of the traditional OLS models. To address this problem, a spatial autoregressive model is employed to account for the spatial autocorrelation in the regression residuals. By incorporating the spatial pattern, the volume-based spatial error model achieves a goodness of fit (R2) of 85 percent, with a significant improvement in model performance and estimation accuracies in comparison with its OLS counterpart. The study confirms building volume as a more valuable indicator and estimator for block level population distribution, especially if an appropriate spatial autoregressive model is adopted. In this article the spatial variability of soil nutrients was investigated and a regionalized nutrient management system was developed using geostatistics and geographic information system technologies. A total of 511 GPS-referenced soil samples were taken in Yongji County, Shanxi province, China, and analysed for major soil nutrients: soil total nitrogen (TN), Olsen extractable phosphorus (OLSENP) and extractable potassium (EXTK). Low concentrations of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were found and they are likely to be the main limiting nutrients for crop growth in this county. Within the county moderate spatial dependence was found for all three soil variables, but at different spatial scales. The spatial distributions of TN, OLSENP and EXTK were estimated by using kriging interpolation. The cropped areas of the county were divided into fertilizer management categories consisting of four classes of TN, three classes of OLSENP and two classes of EXTK. For the targeted crop yields, regionalized fertilization maps of N, P and K in the county were produced using geographic information system. In 3-year field verification trials in two villages the crop yields of the wheat-maize rotation system increased by 10-20%, and farmers' cash income increased by 1550-2610 RMB ha-1 year-1 where regional fertilization recommendations were implemented, in comparison with traditional farmers' practices. The regionalized maps are a practical alternative to site-specific soil nutrient management approaches in areas where it is not practical, because of small farm size or other constraints, to use intensive soil sampling and chemical analyses. [Termes IGN] surcharge atmosphériqueRésumé : (auteur) Atmospheric pressure variations are known to induce vertical displacements of the Earth's surface with magnitudes large enough to be detected by geodetic observations. Estimates of these loading effects are derived using global reanalysis fields of surface pressure as input. The input surface pressure has a minimum spatial sampling, which does not capture true surface pressure variations due to high topographic variability in some regions. In this paper, we investigate the effect that unmodeled topographic variability has on surface pressure estimates and subsequent estimates of vertical surface displacements. We find that the estimated height changes from the topographic surface pressure can be significant (2–4 mm) for sites in regions of high topographic variability. When we compare the estimated height changes to Global Positioning System residuals from the 2005 International Terrestrial Reference Frame Realization, we find that the heights derived from the topographic surface pressure, versus those from the normal surface pressure, perform better at reducing the scatter on the height coordinate time series. Terrain dependency of error was also explored in relation to elevation, slope and aspect of the terrain. The positive mean error (6.77 + 1.79 m) indicated that the SRTM DEM was slightly underestimating the elevation and this pattern gradually increases towards higher elevation. The observed root mean square error (RMSE) (27.58 + 4.22 m) for the region do not fulfill the 16 m RMSE specification of the SRTM mission. High magnitude errors are typical to steep slope (due to overestimation) and in stream valley (due to underestimation). The magnitude of residuals for NW, W and SW facing slope was smaller as compared to their complementary angle. Results also indicated a S and NE components in SRTM DEM because of underestimation and overestimation of elevation, respectively. [Termes IGN] zone urbaine denseRésumé : (Auteur) The increasing availability of very high resolution satellite imagery has spurred interest in automatically detecting very fine detailed changes in an area over time, a particularly useful tool for analyzing activity in dense urban areas. However, attempting automated change detection at this resolution is difficult due to the motion parallax of elevated structures. This paper presents a comprehensive solution to change detection in areas of significant 3D relief using a new framework called volumetric appearance modeling (VAM). This approach can manage the complications of unknown and changing world surfaces by maintaining a 3D voxel-based model, where probability distributions for surface occupancy and image appearance are stored in each voxel. These distributions are continuously updated as new images are received using an adaptive learning procedure. This representation is demonstrated to produce accurate change detection results under conditions of variable illumination and viewpoint as well as haze conditions present in satellite imagery. The volumetric representation also supports automatic sensor model correction to align incoming imagery to a common geographic reference. This registration approach is demonstrated to achieve geo-positioning accuracy on the order of the ground sampling distance (GSD) or better.
