[Termes IGN] MatlabRésumé : (Editeur) Extraction of information from satellite images is a solution for countries without up-to-date base maps. Such images can be easily obtained and cover vast areas. Information is mostly extracted using multispectral classification, but many methods have been developed. The authors examined 'fuzzy classification' and found it more accurate and requiring less computing time than other methods. [Termes IGN] précision de la classificationRésumé : (Auteur) For some tropical regions, remote sensing of land cover yields unacceptable results, particularly as the number of land cover classes increases. This research explores the utility of incorporating domain knowledge and multiple algorithms into land cover classifications via a rule-based algorithm for a series of satellite images. The proposed technique integrates the fundamental, knowledge-based interpretation elements of remote sensing without sacrificing the ease and consistency of automated, algorithm-based processing. Compared with results from a traditional maximum likelihood algorithm, classification accuracy was improved substantially for each of the six land cover classes and all three years in the image series. Use of domain knowledge proved effective in accurately classifying problematic tropical land covers, such as tropical deciduous forest and seasonal wetlands. Results also suggest that ancillary data may be most useful in the classification of historic images, where the greatest improvement was observed relative to results from maximum likelihood. The cost of incorporating contextual knowledge and extensive spatial data sets may be justified, since results from the proposed technique suggest a considerable improvement in accuracy may be achieved. [Termes IGN] régression géographiquement pondéréeRésumé : (Auteur) Geographically weighted regression (GWR) is a local spatial statistical technique for exploring spatial nonstationarity. Previous approaches to mapping the results of GWR have primarily employed an equal step classification and sequential no-hue colour scheme for choropleth mapping of parameter estimates. This cartographic approach may hinder the exploration of spatial nonstationarity by inadequately illustrating the spatial distribution of the sign, magnitude, and significance of the influence of each explanatory variable on the dependent variable. Approaches for improving mapping of the results of GWR are illustrated using a case study analysis of population density-median home value relationships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. These approaches employ data classification schemes informed by the (nonspatial) data distribution, diverging colour schemes, and bivariate choropleth mapping. [Termes IGN] population urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) We present a geometric and graphic approach to studying spatial patterns of urban hierarchy in the US. The multiplicatively weighted Voronoï diagram is found to be effective for visualizing theoretical regions delineated by socio-economic variables. The population landscape of the continental US demonstrates overall and stepwise patterns reflecting population, neighborhood and distance, with overwhelming influence from huge metropolitan areas. Stepwise exploration and cluster analysis of the spatial pattern reveal an urban hierarchy. Attributes and arrangement are the two important factors of urban hierarchy, with attribute having a stronger local influence and arrangement having a stronger global influence. The study also presents a variation of Zipf's law to visualize the rank-size distribution from tabular and statistical space to map. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Automatic placement of text corresponding to graphical objects is an important issue in several applications such as geographical information systems (GIS), cartography, and graph drawing. We focus on realistic data and present a hybrid algorithm for labeling both line and point features. The first step of the method works on the discretized map and uses tools from morphological image processing. It leads to an initial placement of all labels in allowed (i.e., non-overlapping) position. The second step works on the continuous map and uses a force-directed iterative algorithm to improve this initial placement. In a comprehensive study on realistic data sets the strengths of the method (e.g., its flexibility and simple implementation) as well as its limitations (e.g., on dense maps the force-based method is only capable of small adjustments) are discussed.
