[Termes IGN] précision infrapixellaireRésumé : (Auteur) Land cover class composition of remotely sensed image pixels can be estimated using soft classification techniques increasingly available in many GIS packages. However, their output provides no indication of how such classes are distributed spatially within the instantaneous field of view represented by the pixel. Techniques that attempt to provide an improved spatial representation of land cover have been developed, but not tested on the difficult task of mapping from real satellite imagery. The authors investigated the use of a Hopfield neural network technique to map the spatial distributions of classes reliably using information of pixel composition determined from soft classification previously. The approach involved designing the energy function to produce a 'best guess' prediction of the spatial distribution of class components in each pixel. In previous studies, the authors described the application of the technique to target identification, pattern prediction and land cover mapping at the subpixel scale, but only for simulated imagery. We now show how the approach can be applied to Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) agriculture imagery to derive accurate estimates of land cover and reduce the uncertainty inherent in such imagery. The technique was applied to Landsat TM imagery of smallscale agriculture in Greece and largescale agriculture near Leicester, UK. The resultant maps provided an accurate and improved representation of the land covers studied, with RMS errors for the Landsat imagery of the order of 0.1 in the new fine resolution map recorded. The results showed that the neural network represents a simple efficient tool for mapping land cover from operational satellite sensor imagery and can deliver requisite results and improvements over traditional techniques for the GIS analysis of pratical remotly sensed imagery at the sub pixel scale. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) A method is proposed for the enhancement of the quality of a classification result by fusing this result with remote sensing images, based on a Markov random field approach. The classification accuracy is estimated by a modified posterior probability, which is used for choosing the optimal classification result. The procedure is applied to a benchmark dataset for discrimination provided by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Data Fusion Committee, and it shows an excellent performance. The classified result won the competition of the data fusion contest 2001 held by the same committee. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we derive two techniques for the classification of Multifrequency/multitemporal polarimetric SAR images, based respectively on a statistical and on a neural approach. Both techniques are especially designed to exploit the spatial structure of the observed scene, thus allowing more stable classification results. Such techniques are useful when looking at medium - to - scale features, like the boundaries between urban and non-urban areas. They are applied to a set of SIR-C images of a urban area, to test their effectiveness in the identification of the different classes that compose the observed scene. A lower and an upper bound to the classification performance are introduced to characterise their limits. They correspond respectively to pixel-by-pixel classification and to the joint classification of the pixels belonging to the different classes identified in the ground truth. The results achieved with the two approaches are quantitatively analysed by comparing them to the ground truth. Moreover, a hybrid approach is presented, where the homogeneous regions identified through statistical segmentation are classified using a neuro-fuzzy technique. Finally, a quantitative analysis of the results achieved with all the proposed techniques is carried out, showing that their classification performance is much higher than the lower bound and reasonably close to the upper bound. This is a consequence of their effectiveness in the exploitation of the spatial information. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometric (D-InSAR) data of ground surface deformation are affected by several error sources associated with image acquisitions and data processing. In this paper, we study the use of D-InSAR for quantifying land subsidence due to groundwater extraction. We model the data as the sum of a trend, a zeromean stochastic process and white noise. A geostatistical approach combines D-InSAR subsidence data with in situ levelling measurements. The objective of this paper is to correct the errors contained in the D-InSAR measurements by using measurements as the ground data to improve their accuracy. Discrepancies between the true subsidence values and original D-InSAR measurements are analysed at levelling points using variograms and predicted at unvisited points using kriging. The integrated measurements are obtained by subtracting the predicted errors from the original D-InSAR measurements. The proposed method is applied to data collected in the Tianjin (China) area where land subsidence occurs due to groundwater extraction. Results demonstrate the capability of the D-InSAR technique for detecting subsidence at the centimetre level, and of using a limited number of levelling points to improve the accuracy of D-InSAR deformation measurements provided the coherence of images used is high enough. Discrepancies between the true subsidence values and D-InSAR measurements are quantified using the root mean square error (RMSE). RMSE for the original data was equal to 2.8, and 0.8 for the integrated data, whereas the mean error was equal to 2.1 and 0.0, respectively.
